My interview with the Undersecretary was scheduled in the evening, after the Department was closed for business. Since it was the second day of summer, the sun was still in the sky despite the late hour, casting a warm glow on the blank concrete walls of the central campus. I paused in the shaded plaza just outside the lobby, thinking of all the records housed in those windowless wings, of the invisible threads of control and surveillance radiating from the steel cabinets that held them to the lives of every ordinary person in the country. It was difficult not to be daunted by an organization that knew the license number of my grandfather’s first vehicle, the date and dosage of every medicine administered to my mother as she died of cancer, every score on every math test I ever took in school, the weight of my daughter the day she was born. What use could such a bureaucratic behemoth have for me?

Even the title of this video stands as a work of art.
My years at the Department were marked by little change in my circumstances. There were endless conferences with stakeholders, long nights preparing reports and memoranda, budget meetings, performance reviews, inter-agency symposia, awards ceremonies. But the vast concrete walkways separating the offices are what I remember most clearly. Especially those times I would traverse them in winter, cold and windswept, grit and frost crunching under my shoes. The bland taupe of the cement seemed distilled from the bland ecru of the sky, and even though I knew the glass and fluorescent lights of the next building were just a few hundred frigid steps away, they seemed continentally distant. Deep inside me, there is a version of myself that still walks those outdoor concourses on some damp February afternoon.
And then what happened?
@ You mean after my monotonous years at the Department, inching my way, promotion by appointment, up a pointless series of offices? Well, … the changes happened, didn’t they? If you’re not old enough to recall personally, surely you’ve heard tell…wouldn’t you have been acquainted with them in school? As you know, they happened incrementally, over four decades or so, and the Department’s purview, well, it just evaporated ultimately. The funding dried up, its champions in the Legislature retired and grew fewer. And us, the chattering denizens of those immense cement halls, were scattered to the new winds that swept the world.

💛💛💛💛 TLDR: it looks like the entrance to a cave The music is really beautiful on this one i can hear the subtle melody in the background it adds a really nice touch. That rock in the middle of the building is driving me nuts 😂, also i think i figured out what the building is, it appears to be the best entrance to a cave, because you have the valley in the distance leading up to the building, and then there's rocks closest to us which appears to get darker as they get close to us. I realize it's not that deep but to me it has meaning
that is an inspiring perspective. although there is no strictly intended interpretation, it's always nice to see when the emotional intention of the video is percieved and understood.

To me it evokes lost alien cityscapes, too foreign in their former use to make sense of them. But they’re human made, so in a way it suggests we could reach those scientific and societal heights ourselves eventually. Gets me in a meditative mood.
@ It reminds me of the odd 1972 film _Conquest of the Planet of the Apes,_ which used an omnipresent backdrop of brutalist architecture to depict a starkly controlled, morally soulless future of raw domination and subjugation. Look up the trailer for a brief flavor of its use of brutalism. I saw it the theater when I was ten, and it imprinted a select set of strong emotions onto brutalist architecture for me.
@@adellapigna7189 For me, it recalls a heavily flawed 1971 film “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes”, which used brutalist exteriors as ubiquitous backdrops, and as metaphors of control, domination, and surveillance. I saw it as a 10 year old, and it made a lasting impression on me.
