Good advice! Thanks
I weigh 275 also and don’t carry much gear.. I won’t have water coming thru scuppers will I?
Thanks for the review. Just picked one up with peddle drive. Can’t wait to get on the water
Hmm looks interesting!
Could you use this for ocean fishing?
What are those goofy things strapped around your lower legs?
What lures worked that best going their next week and tips?
Man awesome tips, i would really appreciate if you go deeper in this theme, I'm about to buy a new kayak especially for big game fishing, in the exact, blue fin tuna ( technique; drifting) amberjack & big pelagic species in general, it would be great if you can give me some safety tips when fighting seriously big fish without risking my life
How easy is it to deflate and return to stow bag?
Can store fishing rods in front hatch ?
Great video. Nice to have your enjoy our great outdoors
Thanks Chris! Finishing up my canoe this weekend here in Orlando and planning my first adventures.
Cinch and lock seem to be the same thing shouldn't lock make the cable lock so it can't move in either direction?
Great video guys.
What is that cart you're pulling it on? You can store it on the stern too! Is it a diy cart?
Thanks for the review!
Does wind blow it around significantly?
I would like a link on where to buy the pads that you have so u don't burn your feet? Looks like you had them around the back underneath your cooler and stuff? Wondering if it will help with grip to stand and obviously not burning my feet would be nice. I am a new Hobie Compass owner and I want to learn all I can. Thanks.
Would you buy that or a hobie compass?
compass
can you go with that 15 or 20 km out from the beach
How does this compare to the hobie i12?? I feel like the i12 does better in the wind
*_Inflated at my house ahead of the inaugural voyage to make sure it was good to go. Pleasantly surprised how easy it was to inflate and deflate/fold up into the backpack/seat.>_**_allmy.tips/SevylorKayaks?てニ_**_ <Dang cool! Had a great afternoon for my first trip in her on the Willamette River here in Oregon. Paddles did bruise my hands after 2 hours of use (have a replacement on its way) due to the hard plastic, but they are easy to put together/take apart and did not loosen at all during my trip. Would definitely recommend this awesome little yak!_*
Taking notes 📝
Great review!
I'm in western northern Nevada, Where Exactly did you film this Video? Great Stuff 👍👍
How would you rate the stability fishing while standing up?
I'm 6'1 and 225lbs. Is that kayak long enough for me? Also, how will it handle in the bay with light choppy water?
I'm 6'4 and 280 lbs it fits me.
Good review - thank you! What paddle did you go with? I'm ready to order one and and just trying to figure out what paddle brand, length, style & material to go with.
Good overall view. I’m seriously considering. One thing I do like about the Compass is, it is basically a blank canvas to design as you like. I struggle with two things. One I struggle with on all yaks, the amount of extras I’m going to outfit it with... lol. And two, I would do that with any of them. :-) No seriously, two is the fixed seat. The latter being my only real issue. How do you find it? I do a lot to my kayaks, all myself... here’s a quick example, but I would still like your overall opinion on the seat. th-cam.com/video/FniohBVafvc/w-d-xo.html
I have a 2004 Dodge Caravan which has the roof rack would this work on that and if yes where can I order it from
I narrow my choices of kayak down to the OldTown Topwater 106 pdl or the Hobie Compass 180 mirage drive. The only thing is to get it on the water.
Was it much of a cost to go with the 180 drive.
The 180 is a pretty substantial upgrade. When looking at boats like the Outback and PA, the price most definitely reflects the stock upgrade of having it provided with.
Many shops can add 180 for around $200
What happens if you run over something? Will the pedal drive pop up automatically? Will the rudder pop up automatically?
Good question, Doc! Those pedals lock into place when down - it's not recommended to hit anything with the pedals engaged. As for the rudder, it will pop up if it hits ground.
I too weight 275 and was thinking about the coosa HD. Would you recommend this choice. I have a peddle drive kayak that handles 500 # which I use on lakes and bays. The Coosa HD would just be or rivers. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Absolutely! The stability and maneuverability of this boat are through the roof. Overall a great option for rivers and small water.
What deck mat kit did you use with the rectangle hatch upgrade?
This is the Hobie deck mat kit. Very helpful for those hot days when the plastic of a kayak can get extrememly hot or when you're standing for extended periods of time.
Do you think you could use these as regular waders for fly fishing as well as for your kayak?
It's definitely possible!
Were u get the arc drive..everywhere i look is the other one with the side adjustment
You can find the 180 drive at most any Hobie authorized dealer or on Austin Kayak's site! Highly recommend the upgrade if you haven't already made the switch.
I have a 2016 Outback and won a raffle 2018 Compass...the Outback is my baby...love that boat....the Compass is much different, - the feeling of being seated much higher and farther away from the water- very much Pro Angler like, its handling is more like a Pro Angler, turns quickly but does not track as well as the Outback...turbo fins are a must add, can’t understand why Hobie even makes the standard GT fin...I am OK without a 180 drive...fewer parts to fail is a good thing for me...the Compass handles boat wakes differently than the Outback...the bow cuts the water differently and seems to have a lower bow that gets caught in the power curve of the wave where the Outback rides over the power curve...the older design Outback is a better rough water boat and surf boat, but the Compass is not a bad boat...just different.
Good points, Ron! Definitely two different boats, especially, as you mentioned, the differences in the bow - they're big. Both greats boats but have their pros and cons.
I think the standard gt drive is fine for that much cheaper. You can go just as fast with a tiny bit more effort.
@@andrewezinga6063 We haven't tested the two side by side, but that's an interesting point you bring up. The 180 drive, in our opinion, is a game changer though.
KAYAK FISH hobies are great but after months of searching and research I went with an old town pdl and I love it.
@@andrewezinga6063 Great to hear! We're big advocates of both.
I have a Yak Hauler from Malone for my Topwater PDL and it works great. I got my kayak for Christmas and I've only had it out twice so far, but it's been awesome. I haven't had any issues with water in my boat, but I will only be fishing lakes.
Great feedback! We'll have to take a look at that cart. Tight lines
Does the deck stay dry when peddling? Seen some reviews of this yak where your feet are completely under water while in the seat.
Yes it does. When pulling the drive out, a little water gets on the deck, but drains relatively quickly once the drive is back in the water. There's also two scuppers forward of the peddles that assist in draining.
I noticed your kayak cart on the beach. Does it work well with your Topwater PDL? Are you able to position the cart close to the center for better balance or further back of the kayak? I purchased a c-tug for mine but it does not fit well close to the center under my Topwater PDL. If it works well, what make/model is your cart?
Good question - The cart in the photo is the WheelEEZ Beach Kayak Cart. Can't say we've found the perfect cart with this one, but it does the job when the wheels are inflated entirely and cart is strapped to the boat. The unique hull design makes it relatively hard to match with perfect cart.
Hobie Compass vs Topwater pdl for bass fishing?
I'm a fan of both, but I'd say for tight quarter bass fishing, you're better off with the Topwater PDL. The ease of moving out of forward and reverse on the Topwater is a game changer. If you're planning on heading offshore, hitting the bays and bass fishing, I'd say the Compass is your best bet.
topwater is quite a bit better equipped and has reverse
@@thekurrent Why would you choose the Compass over the Topwater for fishing bays? What about fishing in a saltwater marsh with incoming and outgoing tides?
Great channel!
Carlsbad? How is the Compass out in the ocean? Looking to replace the 2012 Outback I just sold.
Length-wise, you're looking at a similar boat to the 2012 Outback. The Compass is 12' and the 2012 Outback is around 12'1". The big difference you'll see in the Compass is the stability and nearly 15 pound lighter weight difference. It does great in the ocean with that said; launching, handling chop and sheer speed-it has it all. They both have their advantages, but you really can't go wrong with this boat!
Nice walkthrough. When you’re standing are you standing on the rectangular hatch or forward of that?
Thanks for tuning in! Typically I stand on the edges of the rectangular hatch, closest to the decking mat. Note that the rectangular hatch is an aftermarket add-on; the Compass comes out of the box with the smaller circular hatch that we've moved to the bow.
finally, a good review of i11s, thanks!
Nice kayak
Thanks, Hank! We'd highly recommend it if you're in the market for a lightweight, maneuverable and affordable pedal drive kayak.
Jerry, thank you for the excellent video on the Hobie I 11 s . What is the brand trailer in your photo . I have had more I 11 since 2016, and would like to trailer it .
awesome channel man! Sub #25 here tight lines... sub me back if you get a sec
Good video, people need to know this stuff!
