For me its been proven that with enough energy and focus i do well in matches , i main heavy edit and its my job as midline area control for my teamates when i am energized and lock in i pretty much can end up hitting dualies when they are dodging but thats is only when i have max focus , so ye i guess focus do help in splatoon

I understand your problem with Zones but it's still my favourite mode. (I'm a tent main so that's probably why)
Yeah I just struggle with zones the most, ironically though I did make a promise that if brella gets fixed this patch I'd pick up tent, because I played it through one tournament, and used to play it in open with my team
