All the drummers who participated are all great with their own style. For a true big band drummer, Rich had all the bases covered - excellent time, a showman, and one- of -a-kind chops. He will always be in my mind the world's greatest.

I wanna add something to the double thumb technique, if your thumb is super straight without curving up like hook , the technique won’t be as good much more effort to sound good than someone who has thumb that curves up like hook will produce better tone and sound much better with less effort

lovely rendition, but perhaps a little fast? Feels a bit like some of the groove is lost because it's running away so much. Great overall sound though, especially the woodwind opening

私の父が好きでレコードを持っていました。子供の頃に聞いても魅力が全く分からずにいましたが、あれから40年以上たって、こんなにいい曲だったっけ？と。「ジャズはまるでドラムをめちゃくちゃに打っているようで、そこにほかのパートが合わせてくる。そうするとちゃんと曲になっている」そこが不思議であり、歌詞が無く音だけで表現してしまうところを父は魅力に思っていたようです。確かに時に歌詞は邪魔に思う時が人間はあると思います。すべて言葉で表される辛さ。クラッシクピアノを習っていた私にこのリズム感は残念ながら体に流れておらず、弾くことは残念ながらできないが、是非ジャズピアノを習いたいと思っています。

I was really fortunate to see The Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1975 at The Riverboat in NYC. It turned me into a fan of big band music.

These guys are unparalleled. Bobby Timmons is incredible….Art Blakey🌟..and Lee Morgan….no words to capture his genius.

All through this session it sounds like the music is going to peter out.

Here’s Pat Martino’s “Symmetrical Parental Forms”. - There are two chords that are easy to form on the guitar because of their symmetrical structure (on just this instrument in standard tuning): the 3-note Augmented triad, and the 4-note Diminished 7th chord. - If you lower any one of the notes in any Augmented triad, you’ll get a Major triad, and if instead you raise any one of those notes then you’ll get a Minor triad (the relative minor!). So that one Augmented triad yields 6 other chords. - If you lower any one of the notes in any Diminished 7th chord then you’ll get a Dominant 7th chord; if instead you raise any one of those notes then you’ll get a Half-Diminished 7th chord (Minor 7b5). (Those 2 chords will be the V7 and vii-Half-Diminished from the same key.) So that one Diminished 7th chord yields 8 other chords. That’s Pat’s “Symmetrical Parental Forms” in a nutshell. - May Pat rest in peace.

Ralph J. Gleason wrote many articulate and thorough liner notes on the back of some the best jazz records out there. Last week I purchased a burnin’ Hampton Hawes record (Vol 2: The Trio), and after doing only minimal research of the author, found this great pre-PBS series. wow! the internet can be very, very cool sometimes.

Anyone know if you can still obtain the vhs, I've still got a few star licks on vhs which i bought back in the 80/90's . Something id like to do is get a good vhs or s-vhs and digitise upscale etc.

A favorite idol of mine, as a percussionist. But really, Neil Peart. Way better.I was better than Buddy in high-school. 15 piece set. Loved him though in my day. He is no comparison to percussionists of today. Old school.
