I don't think there is a person anywhere who could say a bad thing about Tyler Turner. Among the hardest working, most dedicated, and most disciplined, Tyler stands out. In this video clip Tyler walks us through a typical day for the life of a wrestler at the University of Wisconsin. Tyler and his coaches describe his wrestling style and cite several reasons why he is successful- both on and of...

Belaglazov also lost to Gene Mills, in the 70's not sure of the year!
This guy who made this comment almost beat randy Lewis in the seventies Tom husted
A little light in the rafters Tom
Weird I know the guy that made this comment Tom husted he beat out a freind of mine at Wisconsin to make the team
I saw this match in person I was a Dan gable fanatic as a young man so much that I landed a job as a assistant coach in Brookfield east because the coach said I walked like Dan gable who I only met once in my life in Las Vegas
Ya just a little light in the gym Tom right Scotty grudinski was awesome the best wrestler that never made it big that guy could do triple flips on a trampoline
Get back on this tube dude that’s so weird i was friends with a lot of guys in Madison you are from new jersey
That’s really weird that your name pops up and dint you beat randy lewis once or close
I was friends with Scott and Kleven put you in ahead of Scott Scott should of been Olympic champ the guy was incredible
Ya i read that forty years ago he probably The jap was the best ever not getting scored on and a friend of mine was from Japan and he knew who he was very few people know this great comment oh Tom I wrestled with Scott grudinski in college you took his spot at Wisconsin and did not frost lead you to Christ at the gym
I was there Madison WI 1975
It’s weird I wrestled Andy in high school at a freestyle meet and lost 7 to 0 but I was the only guy he did not throw he was super strong like steel and at the time i said this guy will go all the way meaning the Olympics and he was the only wrestler I ever met that I said that in my mind believed that at the time then even weirder I moved to Oregon and met the hicks family and there son Dan hicks beat Rein to win the ncaas and I watched the meet a whole 8 seconds in drain Oregon now these wrestlers get hours just for a dual meet but Andy I believe was the best thrower if thats a word that ever lived he threw my brother Tim and Nate Carr
I honestly believe that Andy was the best at throws of anybody that ever lived and I met a gal once that said Andy was in a dance group, and could do a back flip standing still I wrestled andy he was like wrestling steel
Thanks for posting. Andy Rein was an amazing HS, college and international FS wrestler. Grew up in Stoughton, a great wrestling town and stayed in-state at Madison as part of an excellent Badger Wrestling program. Olympic Silver medalist, then a successful Wisconsin coach. There are other matches posted including one against Nate Carr in which Rein scores with two throws. 1984 Olympic trials are all on TH-cam. Great defense, great offense.
Rein was the best thrower ever I wrestled him in a freestyle meet I lost by seven points but I did not get thrown he could toss anybody he was the best Wisconsin wrestler in the sevevties
Уровень борьбы тогда была намного ниже нынешней. По ролику видно.
I was there for that match. I am pretty sure it was the Northern Open. I and some other high school wrestlers from nearby Stoughton helped out.
Was this high school or Olympic trials?
Rein lost to hicks in the ncaas
Rein could throw just about anybody
Not to take anything away from Lee, but if they wrestled again, Gable would come out as the winner. Gable was not in his prime at this point either, so take that into account
@@yahopostinguy429 don’t think I’m calling Lee bad. Lee is p4p one of the greatest of all time, but I just think prime for prime, Gable would win. And no I don’t think that was Lee’s best, but it’s just like what happened with Lee and Schultz. Lee would’ve destroyed Dave Schultz in his prime, he just happened to wrestle whenever he was out of his prime, and Schultz was rising into his prime. Personally I think Lee could’ve been the Ali or Michael Jordan of wrestling, it’s just that due to politics and all the other things that happened, we never got to see how good he truly was, the only thing we have is the world championships. Also considering Schultz went on to win the gold medal in 1984, I think it’s safe to say considering Schultz didn’t beat Lee by much, Lee would’ve won both in 1980 and 1984
I hope the camera man was punished and the camera was destroyed, because Damn! How do you rebury such treasure like that.
In 1972 Wisconsin had a gold medal and a silver both hometown men from Wisconsin and even Iowa when it was at it's best gable recruited alot of guys out of state about the only college to ever have guys from mostly there home was Wisconsin in the seventies and Oregon state
What a match!
We would have done so well at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. Lewis, Kemp, Campbell, just to name a few. I grew up watching these guys.
And Gene Mills
Ultimate Rankings of course, the Pinning Machine, my apologies. I think I attended a clinic in Massachusetts where he was a guest clinician.
Wasn't this the only time Dan Gable ever lost? These are the two greatest titans of Wrestling
Twice to my knowledge
@@ashtonburgess9673 Amazing, thank you
Here's a good profile. onwisconsin.uwalumni.com/features/a-story-of-almosts/
That guys name is Dan but it’s that’s not Dan Gable
100% that's Dan Gable, he came out of retirement in his late 20's wanting to compete again and ran head first into a young Lee Kemp. Gable decided not to come out of retirement after all and went back to coaching.
I just watched the documentary on Lee Kemp. While I can see what a big deal it was, I was definitely under the impression that Kemp destroyed him when it was a lot closer. Maybe it didn't matter how close it was since 18 year old Kemp defeated a living legend.
Lee was only 18 gable 26 , 27 when he beat gable here. 7-6
Have of Iowa's starting lineup is in there mid 20's now
I coached wrestling near Kirkland at marysville with Rick Iverson in 1991
Gable whipped Kemp in the practice room
practice and a real match are two different things.
But the amish are still tough but the women are covered in clothes so you do not know what you are getyi
KEmp kept his thumbs inside to block gables takedowns
Also farmers in Wisconsin in the past bailed hay by hand and milked cows by pulling the tits of the cows but now even the farm kids are getting soft molly putz as gable would say
I watched this match live as a senior in high school Wisconsin was dominant in wrestling in the seventies better than any other states 2 Olympic champions 3 silver medals but the state I'd no longer as tough due to the decline of the farm industry
Kemp is not from Wisconsin, he's from Ohio. Wisconsin never dominated wrestling at any level.
I was there as well. From Stoughton
@@IDontEatMeat TV i wrestled andy rein he was the best at throws who ever lived i lost 7 to 0 and was happy
Wisconsin had about 4 national.champs natives of the state in the seventies and 1980s plus 6 olmpians from.the state 2 Olympic champs wisconsin was the best overall state for wrestling natives in the 1970s
@@randolphlex714 Ok, they had the Peterson brothers. They were NOT in any world the best State at Wrestling. Who are the 6 Olympians in the 1980s from Wisconsin? Please, name them?
In the 1970,s the state of Wisconsin was number one in wrestling, there was multiple national NCAA champions at every level and Olympians
No, it wasn't. It was still definitely Iowa in College(and always Penn and Ohio for HS)... but Wisconsin was definitely a powerhouse.
I actually met Lee kemp at my spider patch tournament
Wow! Does this bring back memories!!! Was at this meet, watched this match live and, even though he had been out of competition for a couple of years and Kemp was an absolute BEAST, couldn't believe what I was seeing. Kemp, while not one of the "all time greats", was a GREAT wrestler and won more than a few titles for the UW and the USA. No shame in that. AND won this match, fair and square, effectively ending Gable's thoughts of coming back. No small accomplishment.
wow
How old was Gable here?
no one watches this anymore
i was a senior in high school and it was a shock to see gable get beat but Kemp went on to win 3 world titles
I was there too! And still couldn't believe what we were seeing, as great as Kemp was!!! Remember the Chris Taylor match that night, also?
Is this an unofficial match?
This match between Kemp and Gable was, I believe, the finals of the Northern Iowa open tournament several years after Gable had "retired" from competition. A very young Lee Kemp just starting his magnificent career against a legend in Dan Gable concluding his own storied career. As for you ur question, it was not official. Essentially, an open college tournament finals. But they competed hard and both wanted victory very badly.
Practice at Eastlake North preparing for districts, my husband (Kirtland wrestler) had to work out with Kemp. He said, "I shot in on his leg for a single leg, and it was like grabbing a statue....nothing moved lol" He was promptly crossfaced and got a bloody nose, but still brags "HE DIDN"T PIN ME" haha
video not there

Two best wrestlers ever; where would you put Smith,Baumgartner and Sanderson? I put Lee at top for the World Gold Medals and Gable second for his collegiate record AND a gold medal (apparently better competitors than Sanderson's era). These guys'd dominate in MMA
and I would add a gold medal AND no points scored against him WHILE winning the gold, I for one have never heard of that before, or since.
