Welcome to Wolverton Centre Sidings, the channel which is dedicated to the OO gauge model railway I am building in my shed.
Ill be showing the build as it progresses and the occasional tutorial to demonstrate the modelling techniques and materials I use.
Occasionally there will be videos of exhibitions and preserved railways.
I hope you enjoy the channel, if you do, please consider subscribing. It doesn't cost you anything but it does tell me that people are enjoying the content I make. Could I also ask that you like and share the videos as it helps like minded modellers who may find the content I produce find the channel.
Finally please feel free to comment as I am always open to suggestions and constructive criticism and am happy to answer questions you may have.
I don't ask for Patrons, I don't ask for memberships and I don't make any money from my videos,
I do it for fun and to share my journey with like minded people.

First service after engineering works (Video 16)
With regards to the Hornby Kinomatic couplings. In my view, they're useless. If you have a heavy train, the ones nearest the loco will not centralise coming off of a curve, especially if it's 3rd radius. My Hornby later type Pullmans were a problem when 10 were hitched up. I ripped out those couplings and fitted boxes that come with the Kaydee couplings. The back of the knuckle is level with the buffers. These will easily negotiate 2nd radius curves. I see you use Kaydees already. Steveo
loving it, having spent many a morning on Wolverton station and indeed working at the works the atmosphere is wonderful
happy new year from ponders End MR
What brand of flux do you use please ?
@@davemarson7241 I use DCC concepts no clean flux.
I haven't brought a model magazine for a few months, but do still purchase one motorcycle mag (Ride manly due to kit tested and suggested rides), the main reason for not purchasing railway mags of late is I model in O gauge, very rarely seen in mags, in each issue all mags state baseboard construction (how many times do I need to know 1/2'' ply on a 1''x2" frame? adverts are handy for quick reference if your into common scales OO or N. Yes I do also think mags are in the state of every model is great bring or give use more category and also they seem to be like the motorcycle world if its not packed with TECK its no good just more bloody expensive to repair (if you can get the parts) that's why both Dans Model Railways & OO Bill are popular You Tube channels
You make some very valid points here. I have subscriptions to Hornby RM and Model Rail, the latter only because I got it through Tesco Clubcard points or I wouldn't buy it. Personally I prefer a printed copy and I think after all these years the Railway Modeller is still the standout magazine and as you say you get free access to all their archives which I find helpful. What annoys me about Hornby magazine is that they will often put extra stuff relating to printed articles on line and then you have a website subscription to view them. I also don't understand why where magazines have printed and digital copies, if you have a printed subscription you can't also have the digital for free. You usually need to pay more for both when their costs are no higher. Like you I would like to see unbiased reviews and comparisons between duplicated models - Model Rail claims to do this but in reality it is not the case. How is it for example that all the magazines missed or ignored the fact that the suspension details on Heljan's O gauge CCT are completely inaccurate or their BR MK1 carriages have a completely inaccurate body shape when viewed end on. I don't buy BRM at all now as I find the articles recycled and too basic. Also Warners have become an exhibition company that happens to produce a magazine. All these major exhibitions do is suck money out of the hobby as the profits (if any that said) support their shareholders not an organising model railway club. Their RM Web forum has become almost unusable unless you pay a subscription. I find TH-cam is the best source of unbiased information.
I have bought maybe one magazine in the past 5 years. My local hobby shop as old copies they give away for free. I picked up several the other day some going back more than early 2000s. So, yes these magazines can still be useful and interesting, however, most of what they have inside can be found online.
Yes but no! I like a tactile copy but I have specific interests in modelling so at best you only get one article and issue that maybe of interest.
Interesting you don't buy these magazines so what's the problem. I buy many of them and find them very useful and informative and i make the choice to have 2 on subscription and 2 I check out each month. if there were fewer adverts then the cost of the magazine would go sky high. Not sure you should have done this video as you don't read them regularly.
As stated in the video I don't have anything against printed magazines, and again, stated in the video, I will occasionally buy if there is something of interest to me. The whole point of the conversation ( which you appear to have missed) was to ask if printed media is still of value and relevance against when digital and social media is more immediate. As I stated in my closing comments my opinion is that they still have relevance. Thankyou for your comments and for taking the time to view the video!
I ignore the ads and know from first hand experience that BRM / RMweb puts the interests of Hornby over and above that of their customers. I do however cut out interesting construction articles & plans and inspirational layouts and file them for use later. I now have well over a dozen lever arch files full, some from magazines published decades ago which I have hunted down. (But I refuse to buy BRM;) I only buy printed magazines which have content I want (which saves subscribing to all of them) and the colour reproduction is better than my work's laser printers'. I can also highlight key points in the text, which is not possible on TH-cam.
I don't buy any magazine simply down to cost plus never get round to reading them.
I stopped buying printed magazines some years ago mainly due to the space they were taking up. I will only buy a printed one now days if they really catch my eye and as you’ve said in the video if there’s a free item that interests me. I switched to online versions. I decided to drop my model rail subscription as I just lost interest in it ( I had been buying since it started out as a extra magazine in another one then it went to quarterly ) all I have now is my subscription to hornby magazine but only in the last few days I’ve been considering getting rid of that too along with their extra cost of key model world. Working full time and having a young family I get very little time to do any modelling let alone trying to read a magazine and I probably haven’t read my online ones since last year even though I am still paying for them. Like you pointed out I get a lot of info and step by step guides etc from TH-cam and other social media sites.
I haven't bought a magazine in months; I look through them regularly in WHSmith but mostly put them back as there is little of interest to me.
DON'T BUY THEM NOWADAYS it's all online and magazines recycle the same tings every year , and as you say biased ,, but you need to pick your youtube reviewers too as some of those are in company pockets too ,, i trust sams trains reviews the most as he refuses any sort of company favours and buys everything himself
I am fully of the opinion that TH-cam is currently a better portal for railway modelling content compared to the magazines, for various reason that you already highlighted. I did LOL when you name checked Sam 1st without even giving a mention to Jenny Kirk.
@@NewModelRailway1 I name checked Sam's trains and Euvirail just as examples. I don't follow Jenny Kirk.
@@wolvertoncentresidings5676 Any reason you don't follow Jenny Kirk?
@@NewModelRailway1 Not enough hours in the day!
@@wolvertoncentresidings5676 I can identify with that statement, particularly on Friday and Saturday. I am currently subscribed to nearly 200 railway related channels.
i watch jenny occasionally but once you go down the route of getting interviews with main company people , getting sweetners etc your impartiality for reviews has ended no matter how much you say you are giving an impartial review my friend has an plastic modelling channel and on a visit to airfix he was taken to one side and asked " you will say nice things about us !" once you are in with them in any form you are in
Hi, I prefer the Hornby magazine to Railway Modeller because they have more in-depth reviews and extra magazines within at times, I guess it’s a matter of choice down to individual modellers, the hints and tips are very good and very useful.
@@StormmyStormmy I took prefer Hornby Magazine ( on the occasions I do pick up a comic)
I subscribe to a handful of magazines and for me, the cost vs the excitement I get when they drop on the doormat each month is worth it. Mostly this is attributed to recapturing the feeling I got 30-35 years ago when I would visit WHSmith on the way home from school each day on the off chance a new magazine was available and that there might have been a layout in it which inspired me. From the point of view of the adverts in them, it’s entirely irrelevant and although I understand commercially they need to be there but personally I wish they weren’t as by the time they go to print, most of it is out of date old news anyway and any “new releases” which may appear have most likely already sold out on pre order!
Hi, very good progress on a layout that’s progressing nicely, it’s going to be a gem once it’s finished, many thanks for sharing.
Subbed dont let me down as you seem very interesting 😂 all the best
best bit with the concept you have, the works _entrance_ but not the actual works is you have the mainline, and the excuse to run anything you want into and out of the works When I was there is was a mix of passenger stuff, multiple units, a few freight wagons - indeed anything except actual locomotives (bridge weight restriction). there would have been more freight stuff but for %REASONS%.. that little shopping centre was where I did a lot of shopping as I lived round the corner :)
Wow, there’s some interesting plans right there. You’ll get some fantastic shots when looking down the layout at ground level with the new buildings in the background. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses 👍
Hello, I was wondering if you could advise if you had a video on how you constructed your road bridge? I am keen to see how you did as I would like to make something similar myself. Thanks Tim.
@@LetsGo_41 Hi Sorry I don't but it's fairly simple. Just boxes with the road deck joining them. I made it out of foam board and then clad it with brick embossed plastic card.

Hi just found your channel and it look fantastic so I have subscribed, and I will go back over your past videos. It made me smile when you said there about 150 trees on the banking and i suppose you will need more. It's amazing how many we need for a layout, I've estimated I'll need about 10,000 of all different type because I'm building 4 layouts and each been a different country and each is going to be a different season all connected together. looking forward to seeing more. Great video and i love seeing pogress like this, it's especially interesting to see what otheres focus their time on and what order people do things in. Not sure if it's my sound settings but i struggled to hear your commentary over the background music, but with subtitles and muted sound it was fine 🙂. @@GoodfordModelRailway Thanks for commenting. I'm afraid the audio levels are screwed up by TH-cam. I carefully mix the audio when editing to make sure the commentary isn't drowned by the music but once uploaded TH-cam changes the mix.
