Storytelling based on oral tradition served as a mode of knowing, doing, and becoming with(in) the cosmos amongst cultures and societies for millennia. One such storytelling tradition is the historical Indo-Persian Dastan dating back to the ninth century. Its subset of the Urdu language Tilismi Dastan (Tilism, from Greek: tilsam-an enchantment; a vast, enchanted world; Dastan, Persian: ‘story’) combines Islamicate storytelling, worldviews and visual arts with Indic performance and aesthetic traditions and, hence, it is unique to South Asia. However, the colonial project of the West stripped it of its wonder, enchantment, beauty, and especially, its contemplative modality for understanding the interconnectedness of all creation. Yet, the spell still persisted across technologies, from printed tilismi novels to Urdu-Parsi theatre, and the fantasy films of early Hindi cinema, and was finally reinstated in the 21st century with a revival underway. Hence, through Sana Akram’s doctoral research-creation project, they are initiating processes to facilitate this ongoing revival, decolonize, and reimagine this historical storytelling art with emergent media and extended reality (XR), and reclaiming tilismi dastan as a praxis for immersive storytelling, performance, and worldbuilding in the 21st century.
