I think Forsling - Ekblad Mikkola - Boqvist Kulikov - Schmidt Montour replaced by younger high potential Boqvist and OEL replaced by similar but less risky Schmidt. Dont really think Panthers defense got much worse

This format was used into the early 80s,and needs to come back! It would create so many new rivalries. A rivalry like Boston-Toronto is so tired and stale (it isn't even a rivalry. Rivalries are supposed to go back and forth,not one team getting a free pass every year). Even with this,there's the possibility of two historical rivals facing each other in the Finals,like Montreal and Boston towards the end of the 70s,or Islanders-Flyers in 1980 (speaking of which,there could have been the remote possibility of a Rangers-Islanders final in this scenario - a very entertaining and underrated rivalry)
