Slot Canyon Trail at China Date Ranch, CA - 12-29-24
This was a pretty hike along the Amargosa River that started at the historic China Date Ranch in California. Marshy reeds and flowing water cut through a beautiful & stark desert landscape. The trail leads to a short but dramatic slot canyon.

We turned around at about same spot in the slot. We were looking for a shortcut from Fencepost Peak to White Peak. I might have gone farther, but the "rock" was essentially dirt!

It looked possible, but difficult & awkward to get over the big chockstone. Definitely beyond what I would try. And forget about coming down it! You are right, that “rock” out there just disintegrates!

Beautiful imagery! Your eye for composition and the kind of shots that give the viewer a sense of being there is much better than mine. I love the Muddy Mountains as well, I've climbed the Muddy Mountains HP (higher than Muddy Peak, but an easier hike), and I've spent a lot of time cavorting about Buffington Pockets. If you like the North Shore area, you might also want to give some attention to Pinto Valley and Hamblin Mountain. It's a beautiful and overlooked little hideaway just north of the Boulder Canyon narrows area, draining into Boulder Wash. It has some of the same geologic features as the Rainbow Gardens area, even some petrified logs. There are some well-hidden petroglyph surprises there too! You brought back some very fond memories! (Edited to add:) I just looked over your previous videos, and I see you're already way ahead of me on Pinto Valley! Fantastic taste in wilderness!

    • @StudioHoodoo

Ha! Thanks again! Yeah, the Northshore area is my favorite… Pinto Valley, Jimbilnan & Muddy Mountains Wilderness Areas, plus the Muddies outside the Wilderness. The geology is so fascinating & beautiful. I’ve been hiking that area for 20 years now & still haven’t tired of it. I’ve climbed almost every peak out that way. I’m a landscape painter & that’s my passion, but started these videos so I have something to look back on when I get too old to do this stuff. I also have thousands of photos from over the years. I’m so glad it brings back memories & that you enjoy!

Outstanding. I live not far (in Vegas) and haven't climbed it yet. Yes, the rocks in that area are sharp! Have to be careful. There's a peak on the other side of the lake more towards Hoover dam that has an outstanding view. You can find "Pope Mine Road" on maps. That dirt road dead ends near the peak. Not as challenging but the view is fantastic.

Haha! I always carry way too much stuff, since I hike solo. Plus, I want to do some backpacking this winter, so it’s good to get used to a big pack. It was 4 lo for sure! The biggest issue out at Lake mead is the loose rock. So slippery! Even with all that, this peak is a favorite.

That’s an issue with most of the peaks in Pinto Valley if you go in the morning. Going up the canyon helps a bit. I keep saying I want to hike this peak later in the afternoon to get better light.

It was definitely for climbing. One rope looked old, but the other newer. They had also cleared out a flat “pad” beneath & there was a bag of gear there. The bolts looked ok, but some of the carabiners left were rusted. If I was a climber, I wouldn’t use any of it!

I was encouraged that I may actually be able to get up Mummy with my overnight stuff this way. I went up the back of the canyon. I think that way is a little easier than the Foxee Ridge. I topped out right around 11,000 feet, so it’s not much further up Mummy. I carried an extra gallon of water yesterday too. The plan is to camp on a day with zero chance of rain, so no tent needed & my bag & pad weigh a lot less than the gallon of water… 🤞 There is one more ridge I want to try back there too.
