The Art of Logic: What Nobody Tells You About Critical Thinking (1/5)
Why do so many debates hit a dead end? It’s not always about the facts-it’s often about how we think. In this video, I explore The Art of Logic by Eugenia Cheng, a brilliant guide to understanding the deeper structures behind our beliefs, arguments, and decisions. This book shows how logic, emotions, and nuanced thinking can transform the way we navigate difficult discussions.
Whether you want to sharpen your reasoning, improve your debates, or challenge your own assumptions, these five key lessons will elevate your critical thinking skills.
Here's what we’ll cover:
🧱 The power of axioms: How our fundamental beliefs shape every discussion.
💭 Emotions vs. logic: Why they’re not enemies but partners in better thinking.
🌗 Grey areas: Moving beyond binary extremes for more nuanced perspectives.
🔗 Understanding causation: It’s more than cause-and-effect; it’s a web of systems.
📊 Analogies & equivalences: Tools for breaking down unclear thinking.
Along the way, I’ll share my own take on these lessons as a doctor working in the NHS, where critical thinking isn’t just important-it’s life-saving.

    A couple of major issues with the example of axioms presented for "conservatives" and "liberals": Actual principled conservatives absolutely care about Morality. Their moral axioms just do not necessarily line up with Liberals or "Progressives" in certain areas, or how they should be applied. Some liberals and progressives absolutely do advocate for policies that treat people of different skin colors differently, presumably to address past injustices, in order to restore "equity". Principled conservatives balk at this idea, because it violates the idea of treating different people differently. Many liberals also view "Morality" as a tool that was used to control the masses, and favor moral relativism over traditional understandings of morality and maximizing their conception of freedom instead. The examples shown of "conservatives" (Trump, Vance) are hardly actual principled conservatives that adhere to real axioms. Most of them are simply morally and principally bankrupt grifters who flip or flop based on what conveniences them. Was looking forward to this video, but the errors and presumptions made in the first three minutes were a bit discouraging.

      Thanks for such a thoughtful comment! It may surprise you to learn I very much agree with you. My point about axioms was that different world views are based on different principles. I gave an example of liberals and conservatives drawing on British political tradition, but you're right to say some progressives/ conservatives apply these differently. The book "The righteous mind" argues for this, demonstrating that liberals overemphasise equality in relation to other moral principles when compared to conservatives. I didn't mean to suggest this was a hard rule or to suggest that conservatives lack morality. I only meant to suggest the interpretation of morality is different. Your comment suggests you agree with this point, so I think we're fundamentally on the same page. As for Trump/Vance, we can agree they are not principled conservatives. Unfortunately they are the best known representatives globally of a conservative party so I thought they were best to illustrate the point to a general audience. I didn't want to split hairs with my editor about a point I thought was relatively minor, but I can see why it bothered you. Anyway, I hope that addresses your points. Even if you didn't enjoy the rest of the video, it clearly got you thinking, and I'm happy about that!

    Dr Zack, do you really think that the kind of honest you suggest could have saved face for Blair in Paxman´s interview was really possible? Can you quote any other politicians who have been thus honest?

    • @Drzackhassan
      @Drzackhassan หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think one interview performance could have turned it around. However, I do think Blair did not managed to be perceived as honest on Iraq by the public. Other politicians who have been praised for their honest communication style include Jacinda Arden, Angela Merkel and Sanna Marin. But in the UK, you probably have to go back to someone like Thatcher to find someone who communicated their views completely straightforwardly

    • @claire5481
      @claire5481 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Drzackhassan Thanks very much for your reply and the video. Interesting the three politicians you mention are women, but I sincerely don't think Thatcher would ever have been able to. But it's true, Blair lost a lot of trust. Shame. He did finally admit mistakes in 2015, however.

    Undoubtedly! Obama’s speaking techniques are incredibly accessible. I’ve tried incorporating repetition in my own talks, and it really does help keep the audience engaged. His knack for using contrast, like juxtaposition and antithesis, makes his messages stick. I learned a lot about these strategies in the Sense of Humor Improvement Program by Habit10x-it's all about weaving techniques into everyday conversations. With practice, anyone can elevate their communication skills to that level. Keep exploring these techniques; you'll find your own voice shine through!

    New subscriber here and this is my favourite of your videos :) I hadn't seen those clips of Dawkins and Hitchens before and to me they were quite cringey to watch - I know the argument that atheism is arrogant is nuanced but to me this is how people like this can sometimes come across (Sam Harris especially). The world needs more intellectual humility like you have here. Super interesting topic. Looking forward to your next one!

    He was a good speaker and had charisma but i think that also was his problems at times that the ”bigger then life” Persona stood in the way of some of the things he did good enough but it also stood in the way of other things were i feel he seenmed to not ”have his feat on the ground” not saying he did not have his feet on the ground only that his speeches sort of gave the impression of a ”bigger then life” promise and i think the next ones should focus more as a team and i got to be honest i am not to hung up if someone is not so good at small talk in interviews or if they need more practice or needs to Get better at improv since so many politicans are but then what they say turns into this negative me,me,me spiral, and it at times dont match how they present themselfs, i mean if youv got someone who is not some Expert at small talk i guess they can try to practice or Get better or improv or whatever but at the same time i am a bit like i dont care to much if some politican says something ‘ Edgy and over the top’ at all times since i feel that can Get tiredsom to, i think the one who is next should see it as more like a team to not feel so alone on the job but work on the difficulty of the practical stuff but to also remain optemistic and opne to solving things instead of this self destruktive and extrem way the other one ( at least for now thats my impression with a few of them, hopefully they can recover) but its sort of tiering with the negative and drama queen talk from some of them ( this might not be a good advice but its just something iv noticed)
