Squeaky Wheels: Unsheltered
Alex Peeler and Vicky Levack are both passionate disability advocates who are actively involved in their local communities. Unhappy with their current living situations, they decide to partner up on an online documentary to spread awareness about the ongoing accessible housing crisis. Despite living in self-isolation during a global pandemic, they plan to start a petition to their political leaders asking to build more accessible housing in Nova Scotia. Both Alex and Vicky are determined to win the fight for accessible housing at a time when the stakes couldn’t be higher.

    In hindsight I’ve had C.M.T. from junior school, dad would get me and wrestle (me 1year older than my brother) I would fight like hell because of my tender left sole (drop foot and tender sole). The brother was no fun for dad , he didn’t react. I’ve had C.M.T. from junior school. Thanks.

    Cheers and how's it going? I also think if you were born with superior tastes, you would prefer Star Trek (not the new stuff, mind you, but especially TNG) over Star Wars! 😛There was the case of Geordi La Forge there and even though he was blind, his visor could allow him to see what others could not. That's a hypothetical involving new tech but I think it also applies metaphorically to all of us who, as a result of things we could not help, can see things that other people can't see. On the part about advocating for disabilities, that's certainly a blindspot of mine. But it doesn't just come from being able-bodied. I don't have any close friends or loved ones who are disabled although I see no reason why we couldn't be close friends so far if we had met except for your preference for Star Wars over Star Trek! Then I think I would advocate more for causes relating to disabilities as I would advocate for any cause causing any one of my good friends to suffer. What I have experienced among myself and loved ones is suicide (lost a best friend in high school who shot himself Kurt Cobain style), gout (I got diagnosed with it in my 30s as with most of the males in my ancestry), cancer (lost loved ones to it), among other things. So those are the causes I tend to prioritize although that's also a symptom of the nature of my life's experiences. I figure we all get dealt our hands. All we can do is relatively make the best of it. Doyle Brunson came to love 10-deuce in Poker and sometimes makes crazy bets with it. I always liked the suited jack-ten even though it's far from aces. I bet and raise with it like I have aces and that often makes people fold. People focused on absolutes, like making things "best", often forget how to make things better.

    I just recently found out that Mira does more than just guide dogs. I have EDS and my stability had been getting worse, so have been looking into what they offer. As much as if need be, I'll work with local trainers to train my own, Mira is just so much better recognized in Canada as a service animal training center. I know people who have self trained service dogs and had a friend who had a guide dog from Mira, and we always had less issues, sometimes even at the same places, with the Mira dog vs the self trained one. It is not a right now thing, but picking up things off the ground is starting to get more painful & I recently went from being able to work as a barista to needing to use mobility aids almost daily when I am out if the house that I use for preventing wobbling that causes injuries, getting up from sitting and for temporary bracing when I am waiting in line. So not a this will drastically benifit my life right now, but a I see where my situation seems to be heading and this would definitely benifit me should things progress the way they seem to be.

    Thanks for the video my fellow Canadian. l live in Saskatoon SK. There are actually 7 or 8 different types/variants of CMT. l found this out a couple months ago on either the NORD or NINDS website (or maybe it was both) and l have the rarest form. What makes my type so rare is that l have Parkinson's like tremors on top of the muscle wasting, drop foot, shitty balance etc. l also have slurred speech which makes me talk like l'm a little bit drunk. My official diagnosis is actually called Roussy-Levy disease. l've been living with this shit since l was 12, l'll be 49 in a week. lf you want to chat or whatever, l'm willing to do so.

      Hey guys, fellow Canadian CMT'er here myself. Also, like you I have a rare type/subtype as well (CMT Type 4C). I'm out in Ontario, just 45 minutes east of downtown Toronto. I really hope that you guys are doing well, it's not too often I see any other Canadians living with the this "shite" as well. Take care of yourselves, all the best!

    • @Jimmy-Volmer
      @Jimmy-Volmer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnypotts4003 Unfortunately, there's not much activity on this video. l completely forgot l made a comment on here. l've also noticed that there's fuck all for research being done on this. l guess if you don't have cancer, heart disease or some other very well known illness, you're pretty much shit outta luck when getting anything resembling answers. And for all of you out there who may be considering t, there's an organization in Canada called MAID, Medical Assistance ln Dying. lt's as the title suggests, assisted suicide. lf you meet their criteria, they help you end your life if and when you just can't take it no more. l'm seriously considering going this route. As it is now, l can barely walk, lost the ability to even sign my own name and a shit load of other things that l used to do, now l simply can't. l used to be a drummer and the fact l can no longer play is heart wrenching to say the least. l used to do a lot of my own work on my cars. Now, l can't even use a screwdriver effectively. But the absolutely worst part about this is they (neurologists) can't tell me how this all started. lt's apparently hereditary but there's zero evidence of this on either side of my family. l have an appointment on Monday with a neurologist on Monday so hopefully there's some good news.

    Thanks for making a video about this. I had never heard of CMT, and much like your friend it seems this is something that affects people who might never recognize indicators until a very late period. It seems to be a fairly rare disease which has little to no impact on life expectancy. I will consider making referrals in the future for those (especially children within the same family) with motor and cognitive delays. Some type of physical therapy may be useful in such cases.
