is it possible to combine more than 2 surfaces, say corridors to your main grading surface?
It should be if you just keep pasting surfaces to the newly created one. You just need to remember the order of pasting them. I do this when pasting a corridor on top of the existing surface topo.
Hi and thanks a lot for this valuable tutorial, but I have a problem. When I export only centerline, the .geo file is created, but when I export centerline and banks, it shows an error following: Undo failed for class: aecc_alignment, and it doesn't create .geo file. Can you help me with how I can solve this problem please? I need your help so much. Thank you
Great 7 part series, sir. Much appreciated. Thank you for your time and effort.
Thank you for this simple and straightforward tutorial. As a new HECRAS user I feel like other videos have been overwhelming with information but this was to the point and simple in an informative way.
Thanks
Sometimes curb return alignment is not tangent, there will be a gap to form a corridor. Do you have any idea to solve this matter? Thanks!
Thanks John. You helped a lot!
Very helpful, will you able to do a roundabout design in Civil 3D 2024
Thanks. I can probably make a roundabout design video. They are pretty similar to doing just general intersection, which I do have a video on. I'll see what I can do
Thank you John for this
Your instruction / guide is very helpful! Only comment I have is if you are copying and pasting from one file to another for those tin surfaces to select the base tin (your "DEM Surface" here) and copy to clipboard. In the combined drawing file, I right clicked and pasted to original coordinates. Since I geolocate everything, it aligned perfectly. @ekelwantsfood this may help you
Really appreciate this video. Another way to accomplish this would be to: 1. Click Annotation Tab 2. Click Add Labels drop-down arrow. 3. And then select add multiple segment line/curve labels 4. Select the Polyline or lines
Hi I need a. Job, where I can contact you?
I followed the Video...but at 11:15, when I export, there's a lag, and the .geo file is made of 0 size in my directory I pathed to. And subsequently, when I import it into the HecRas geometry file, there's nothing there. I did a dwg audit, nothing needed fixed, restarted 2023 c3d and tried again....same result. The alignment & sections are there in c3d. There's a discontinuation at this export stage. Not sure what issue is of.
Thanks!
You are great man! Thanks for sharing, you saved me a lot of time!
Thanks!
Thanks sir for this exciting video. I have this challenge with SAGA Plugin Whenever I run Fill L &G, get error as SAGA 7 .2. 8 is not a support for windows. What's the solution, please.
Hi John, Thanks very much for sharing this. I was wondering, how do you fix the sections intersecting each others like for example 799 and 666.54 in your example? Is there any way you can make a bend without necessarily cutting them in order to avoid them to intersect? (In the situation when you receive a survey I mean, so you have no surface to cut them from)
Thanks for the video! Starting to learn LAStools
Good job sir
thanks for sharing your precious knowledge with us
At 6:00 I would suggest using the FILTER command to bring the Elevation from the Object Data to the Elevation Property field.
6:00 - why wouldn't you isolate the contour layers? You should really learn that command. LAYISO
Well you do things the hard way until you learn a better way, I suppose. But now I know a better way, so Thanks!
@@johnedwards4115 Let's not ignore the fact that you just taught me how to make a surface from contours. So...Thank you!!
Very helpful!
bro this helped out so much with hydrology class. Not trying to offend anyone, but I'm glad there is someone with a good ole American accent speaking. Usually there is some guy from India or God knows where, and I can hardly make out a word. Bless their hearts
Hello John. I'm so happy I stumbled across your YT channel. I work for an Environmental Engineering company in Maryland. I've been employed here for over 15 yrs. I've become the unofficial in-house go-to person for all things CAD. We have a hard time finding videos that we can use that are extremely relatable because there aren't many companies making videos that do what we do. We do alot stream restorations, as well as SWM retrofits, dredging, and shoreline stabilization projects. So far, your videos have been some of the most useful for be to be able to tell a new hire to watch and it actually have practical applications here at our office.
That's great to hear. I mostly just do it to either train new folks at our company or for new tasks I learn (or things I always forget). I'm glad other folks can use them as well.
THANK YOU SO MUCH JOHN!!! I had a problem where my vectorized raster can't make a proper Thiessen Polygon. Your video helped me to check in the attribute table and made me realized that there were 30 polygons :')
Hi. Im unable to paste dem. how did you do that?
Its hard to say without more information, but I guess the main thing is the DEM you are pasting needs to already be in the drawing to appear on the list. Also, I'm not sure if its required, but it would be ideal if each DEM is in the same horizontal and vertical units and coordinate system
Thank you for a very helpful series!

Thanks for the video! When I imported the .geo file I got the following error: "None of the XS's are Geo-referenced". How can I fix it? I have set the projection in Civil 3D via adesetcrdsys command. Any idea?
When I import my polyline banks from Civil3D, the geometry bank stations are shifted to the left of my river centerline. Do you have any ideas as to why this may be happening?
My cross section sample lines are zig-zaged rather than straight to accommodate bends. Maybe the cross section line segment perpendicular to the stream must also cross the bank line perpendicularly?
@@ctln7bdd I'm having the same issue, we're you able to resolve this?
Hi John. Thanks for the video. However, when I convert my raster, it doesn't multiply the values by the full 3.28083. I expanded the number of digits in the units under general project settings, but no luck. Any thoughts? Thanks again.
Hi John, thank you for your detailed tutorial. Under "Culvert Summary Table", there are "Inlet Control Depth" and "Outlet Control Depth". I wonder how to interpret them? What do they mean and how can we use them? Why do we have 2 depths here? Thanks.
pls send this map to training on it
Good day! How can one find morphometric parameters like stream length , bifurcation ratio of this watershed using QGIS?
When running the channel network and drainage basins tool, select the Strahler order button to get your stream orders, however this comes out as a raster I believe. You can get stream lengths from the channels vector file that you create in the same tool as above using the raster calculator. Then you could just associate each vector with its stream order to give you the data for the bifurcation ratio
@@johnedwards4115 Thanks a lot sir! Your video was helpful.
REALLY LIKE THIS BECAUSE YOU JUST SHOWED HOW YOU CAN USE RASTER IMAGE IN TO A VALUABLE TECHNICAL DOCUMENT. I WILL BE WATCHING YOUR VEDIO. LOVE IT.
OK I have a question, my DEM file has a .DEM extension not .tif. How did you download a .dem and get to .tif?
Civil 3D should be able to use a .dem as well.
good stuff thanks
The way to tag the contour with its actual elevation is to run a query and link the elevation of the feature to the elevation provided from the shape file.
Good tip on the quick map services.
Thanks John, for the tips and tutorials. This is very helpfull, especially for a beginner like me.
Hi, are there any other softwares that can be used to create the hecras geometry? Thanks.
You can create them in a GIS (I use QGIS) and upload them similarly, also there are extensions for ArcGIS specifically for creating HECRAS geometry. Also, you can create the geometry yourself in HECRAS either in the Geometric Editor or the RAS Mapper. Either of which you can also import shapefiles and DEM rasters to.
good job, need how to make document of the work (verification of work) as you said everybody make a mistake
good video
While going for the upslope area an error occurs stating missing / wrong parameter value..no idea!!
thanks for the video, great help
Great series John it helped me immensely. Do you think you can make a new series on modeling canal/river flow and possibly the hydraulic structures associated with it (i.e. Drop/outlet/culvert structures)? I think that would be a great series, also I need help with that haha. Thanks
I am hoping to get some more videos up on running HECRAS analyses, but likely won't be for a few months
Excellent tutorial
Thanks for saving my time, it really helped a lot.
