Driving Tour of MBOTMA Minnesota Bluegrass August Festival in Richmond, MN

I had my dash cam going while driving into and out of the El Rancho Mañana campground during the 2022 MBOTMA Minnesota Bluegrass August Festival in Richmond, Minnesota. I thought it might be fun to share some of the video to hopefully capture a little bit of the ambiance of the festival. It's much better if you visit in person though...that way you can hear the music!
Pisgah Custom Dobson Professional Banjo Unboxing & Review
มุมมอง 1.6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is an unboxing of a semi-custom banjo that I purchased from Pisgah. The backstory is that I originally purchased this from Bernunzio's Music online, then I sent it off to Pisgah to get some additional "flair" added to it, including a bone nut, fifth string spikes, a brass plate on the neck, John Balch calf skin head, armadillo armrest, and a bunch of other accessories. I accidentally calle...
Dueling Banjo
มุมมอง 1212 ปีที่แล้ว
Having some fun with the Gold Tone BG-10 ten string banjo. I added ML-1 baritone strings so that I could tune each course an octave apart. Normally, if tuned to open G, only the low D and G strings are tuned an octave apart on this banjo because attempting to do so on the higher-tuned strings would snap them. However, by tuning this down to C with the baritone strings, it's just barely possible...

Early 1930's Pre-War Gibson TB-11 Conversion Banjo Demo - I'll Fly Away
มุมมอง 1972 ปีที่แล้ว
Here's a demo of my early 1930's pre-war Gibson TB-11 conversion banjo that I purchased from Ceres Banjo Works. The banjo has been cut with a Gibson "Crowe" tone ring, has a Sullivan maple neck, and a refinished original walnut resonator. Snuffy smith bridge, NOS Presto tailpiece with Gibson logo, Gotoh tuners (I think), and original armrest (I think). It's a really nice and fun banjo to play! ...

The Garrykennedy Set

This is a novice attempt at The Garrykennedy Set on 5-string banjo. Jigs include: The Leg of the Duck, The Black Rogue, and The Bush on the Hill. This arrangement is inspired by the great tenor banjoist Gerry O'Connor's version on his album Myriad.
How to play Big Country by Béla Fleck on banjo
มุมมอง 14K4 ปีที่แล้ว
By request, a video of me playing Béla Fleck's Big Country slow in an attempt to show others how to play it (at least the way I know how to). It's not exactly as Béla Fleck would play it, since I learned it by ear, so the fingering is likely not exactly the same. I'd recommend using this as a starting point, but once you have it down and can play it up to speed, listen to Béla Fleck's recording...

Could you do the squidbilles end credits bango music? Also, I recommend wearing a halloween mask in case it shows your face if you want to be private and not show it 👍
I love the Lewis Family, was fortunate enough to see them in four different states: Ohio, PA, Florida, and Tennessee. They were always so fun and I appreciate their musicianship more and more as I get older. May Little Roy and Janis and Travis and Lewis Phillips all live to 100!
Nice review. I have had one for about 5 years now and enjoy it very much. I also have an Eastman Octave Mandolin. Both are great instruments for the $$. Just today, one of my 8 pegs at the tailpiece broke off in storage in the case on the shelf. I contacted Eastman today to try and get a warranty or a purchased new one. I sent an email. Lets hope they come thru with a positive reply and an exact match so I don't need to drill new holes. I also have a Kentucky mando and a Weber mando. This has never happened on any of these to date.
Thank you for that
My wife and I seen the Lewis family at least three times. Always a great time. When their set was over Little Roy would jam about all day. He really loved to play his instruments. Lord seeing them in concert.

Amazing
Praise Jesus...
Nice review, thank you very much. I have a Matsikas MDA-102 Round Mandola which is a stunning Greek made Neapolitan beautiful mandola. I bought it off of the Thomann Music website. It cost 365 dollars. I also bought a Thomann Mandoloncello Standard C model for 539 dollars. It is a beautiful teardrop shaped mandocello that looks and plays great. So for roughly the same price as the Eastman mandola you can get a Greek Neapolitan mandola and a Portuguese made mandocello. I can’t say enough good things about Thomann music. Many of their instruments are 1/3 or 1/2 as much as similar instruments go for on eBay or Reverb. I’m trying to resist the urge to buy the Eastman mandola. Simply because the one drawback to my matsikas bowl back is it can only be played sitting down with a foot stand. I already have an Eastman mandocello, octave mandolin, and F-style mandolin, and they’re great instruments, I need to stop hoarding instruments so hopefully I can resist the temptation.
Great review, thanks very much.
I appreciate any Lewis family content, breathe of fresh air!
Beautiful banjo. What strings does it come with from factory? Did you find the nylagut strings to wok out?
@@liliaveitia5854 I just have the standard old-time clawhammer strings that PBCO sells on their website. That is probably what they put on right out of the factory. I actually haven’t used the nylgut strings despite having this for a few years now since I’ve liked the steel strings.
I recently ordered an Eastman MDO305ESB octave mandolin mail order. When I unboxed and went to play it, it sounded awful, something like a Gibson 335 if you didn't plug it in, or like a 2X4 with strings. Within 5 minutes it was being re-boxed and the same day was on its way back.
So much fun. Thank you for this!!
Camera man needs to learn to put the camera on the one playing at the time he's playing
Lovely, clear, precise. In this rendition, I could appreciate the unusual beauty of this"missing link," banjo. Thank you!
The hollow sound might go away if a different bridge was used. When the bridge makes more contact with the body, it sounds better. I will probably make that change on mine.
I really love that!!!!!
I played the OB-300 Gold Plated and those GoldTone ''Mastertone'' serie are just simply awesome instrument. Same categorie as the the Bella Fleck version. Don't hesitate and buy yourself one of those awesome ''Mastertone'' serie.
Any more thoughts after owning it two years?
I’m enjoying it still. It was good for the price I paid. Prices have gone up considerably since this though, and now these cost somewhere around 3k. For that price, I might consider other options, like Gold Tone or Eastman. I haven’t had this professionally set up, but it definitely could use it. If you want this style, and you find it for a decent price, it’s not a bad deal. I see there’s some on eBay for about 2k that are not necessarily from Pango, but it looks like they’re probably coming out of the same factory.
Doesn't say much for Pisgah quality control with all the issues out of the case.
Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Will they customize to a wider nutwidth. 1-9/32 is really not wide.
Beautiful music and great singing Praise God!!!
Is it made in China ? Is it American made or just assembled in the USA ?
Unfortunately, it is made in China and set up in the USA. The slight exception to this are a few of the components, like the tuners and tailpiece, which are made in USA and Czechia, respectively.
My wife got me one for Christmas, and I'm so pleasantly surprised. I was a bit anxious about how unique this banjo is (worried about comfort and tone), but I had no reason to be, because I personally find it more comfortable than a standard setup and the tone is butter. I love it. By the way, she ordered it around December 15th or so, and they had it shipped out within a week, which is impressive around the holidays. No delays, so I guess they've got most of the issues ironed out.
Oh yeah, after their first or second batch, it seems like they've produced plenty of them. They're widely available now. I actually wish I would have waited to get mine so I could pick one out from a shop. Oh well!
Wowzer! Stunning version of one of my favorite tunes!
3600.00 and made in China. OUCH!
Correction...$3,699! Now, it does play nicely, and I've enjoyed playing it. But yes, it's expensive, and probably a bit more than it should be. Unfortunately for me (and I should have known better), resale value of these has certainly taken a plummet. Used ones seem to be going for under 3k...some less than $2,500 or so (which in my opinion is right around what I think this banjo should be priced at brand new). Those who are on the market for one of these now may wish to seek out a used one to save quite a few pennies! Buying one of these brand new is just like driving a brand new car off the lot, unfortunately...the value will drop by about 1/4 to 1/3 by my estimation (which should be taken with a grain of salt).
Its easy to see youre a bluegrass player. Ive been playing clawhammer for 40 years, and you're pretty off on the right hand technique. We teach to cut the nails. The index and middle fingers have different sounds when theyre developed. You cant develop the fingers with nails or picks. As you play, the right hand calluses too. The fingernails flatten out and and curve toward the point of the finger. With short nails, the string hits the nail and slides off onto the callous and creates the cluck. Without the cluck, you're just strumming, thats not clawhammer. In clawhammer, we dont strum the strings. It is what it sounds like, a claw used like a hammer. The hand comes down on the strings in the direction of the head. Its a striking motion. A thump against the banjo head. Clawhammer uses the head as percussion. Its a drum and we use as part of the rhythm. You made the same mistake most people make in thinking that frailing and clawhammer are the same. Theyre almost opposite of each other. Frailing is more gentle to the instrument. Almost loving. I love frailing against modern music. Often blending in clawhammer and 3 finger. As far as starting frailing, this was a great video. As far as clawhammer goes, there was no clawhammer in this video.
Beautiful instrument!
Amen
Like very much
I suspect the prices will continue to rise as more and more people discover the value of Eastman.
They will sell a million of those..Great playing.
Great review!
"I'm not a mandolin player" and then proceeds to rip on Old Dangerfield. Nice review, thanks!
..just shut up and open the damned banjo case!!😂
Nice playing. Thanks for posting the video.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
Brilliant, lovely and soul refreshing blue grass music from a famous LEWIS family collections! Thank you very much indeed for the wonderful songs, instrumental and sense of humour !!!
Awesome
Informative video and nice playing...
Nice demo. FWIT, the Airloom hard cases provided by Northfield has a backstrap, which I have used a couple of times. I also have an Eastman 305 and the lightweight soft case make it easier to take on hikes than the Northfield with the hard case. Also there's less worry about taking the 305 to the woods vs my Northfield.
God loves us and Jesus died to make a way for us to be forgiven of our sins. Please accept Jesus as your Savior if you have not already.
Still the best!😂❤
Grew up listening to these people love them. Saw them a few years ago. They sound the same as they dis when I was a kid. I’m 66.
Hi there! Excellent video! Thank you for your honest first impressions! We hope that you enjoy the Béla Banjo! Yes, that is his real hand-written signature!
Thanks for the note! It has been treating me well for almost a year now.
Get a new hobby. Doing reviews isn’t your strong point.
Thank you for the feedback. However, you forgot to give me what your actual criticisms of my reviews are. If you tell me, that might help them be more helpful for people.
That is a beautiful arrangement! Too bad there’s no tab. Guess I’ll learn by ear
I'm not a fan of the melodic style, but I would love to learn this song. Problem, no one has the tab. I even requested we start a fund account to have Carson Sass tab it out. I'm a slow learner and without tab I need to be in the same room with a teacher.
If I knew how to write tab, I'd tab it out. But, I've never done it before :/
Thanks for this--it's a beautiful instrument. As I'm considering a Pisgah, I wish more folks would do such nice in-depth reviews of their banjos. This really helps!
