Easy guide on HOW TO do a Astra electric power steering pump conversion on an alternate car
This is the only how to on the web that is simple and straight forward info for you guys to retrofit an Astra power steering unit on an older car already equipped with power steering.

Is it opel zafira 2000 y electric pump?
Nice videos
Does it run loud or was it because no engine noise it seems loud
@@howardmoana5577 can't hear it over the engine
something wrong there, astras dont sound like that, maybe wiring is incorrect
They have insulation around them and aren't hard mounted in the astra.
Excellent walkthrough. Is there any way to silence them a little or you dont notice when the car us running?
Never notice it
Is the pump meant to be that noisy?
I wanna get one and put under my car seat just to hear the noise
How to connect wiring
hey mate could we please see how you mounted and set your up if that possible please?
Yeah shoot me a pm
what rubbish
Whore i got this
How do you know if that part does not belong to the original car
How do I know what
Great video and really helpful thank you.
Might do this so I don't kill barra steering pump
This car has a 1200hp barra in it now. I'm running the stock barra steering pump and never had issues. Plus barras run a serpentine and you'd have to compensate for the missing pump. I don't know why you'd run this on a barra.
Thanks heaps bro , no bullshit straight to the point . I was in 2 minds about converting my VL to electric power steering but think I'm going to give it a chance
How loud is it ? And can you hear it when driving ?
Nah. Big 393 in there. Can't hear anything
@ 0:25 it doesn't magic away the power needed to drive the power steering, instead it takes the power indirectly from the alternator instead of directly from the original belt driven pump.
Takes the mechanical load off the engine. Added 4hp. Not the point of it. Just an added bonus
@@leigh3924 ?? the engine still drives the alternator as a 'mechanical load', then converts it to electrical power, which drives the electric motor which drives the power steering by consuming that electrical power.
@@noelwhittle7922 lol, you're over thinking it or arguing semantics to be a brat
@@warmweatheronly .. another one who doesn't understand.
@@noelwhittle7922 if you think increasing the amperage draw from your alternator equates to anything more than using an existing surplus of electric current you're misinformed. Your electric system either can, or can't, handle the accessory. Here's how much HP is taken away from merely spinning the p/s accessory off the crank. An alternator by comparison doesn't experience an increase in drag or friction with load. th-cam.com/video/2nrphOdvZRY/w-d-xo.html
Hey mate, how have you gone long term running Automatic Transmission Fluid through the Astra pump. Has the pump survived? I have used an old Kirby Bishop box that uses automatic transmission fluid with an Astra pump that is recommended to use synthetic power steering fluid. Trying to work out which fluid would be best to use for both.
No drams been 3 years or so
Thanks mate.
Great video to the point good info..... I wanted to know a bit more about this conversion that seems pretty popular..... Cheers mate great job
hey man, awesome video! just wondering if you knew the size of the outlet on the PS pump. I'm going to need to buy a banjo bolt to try and fit it.
Think it's an m8
if you use a delay-on relay with about 1s delay to connect power to the blue/white wire, it will spin up instantly instead of the safe-mode slow spool
@Rick Kennedy never works. Don't even bother.
@Kiwi Cars Nz do tell
Wire up blue and white wire to alternator and black to 12v switched and you'll get the delay needed to get instant spool
@Plant Powered Health I wired 1 wire to accessories and the other to ignition and works fine . Had them the wrong way around to start with , just switched them and it spools up straight away now.
@@alexanderm2225 Wire one to accessories and the other to ignition , if it still won't work switch them around. Just leave it a second between switching from accessories to ignition.
Hey mate did the ford power steering hoses fit straight in or was there a adapter?
You've gotta make an adaptor. It's all in the video
hello Leigh, thanks for sharing!! I'm converting my 80's camper to power steering and probably I'll delete the belt-driven pump in my 4x4 if everything goes well. I was wondering, in the video the pump seems very loud, is it actually loud, or was it just your garage acoustics?
It is semi noisy! It is drowned out by the engine though
@@leigh3924 hey man other question, did you put a fuse or something? I have seen people doing it, have you had any issues since you installed the system?
@@psycholor6566 car now has a modern turbo 6 cylinder. With this setup the car had a 351 cleveland. The modern 6 has its own belt driven power steering. The car had no issues with the astra system. I had a fuse in the main power from battery to pump for safety reasons
Brilliant! Time to ditch the standard power steer pump!
Awesome video very helpful even a couple years later 😆 cheers mate 👍
Happy I could help
hallo sir,can you tell me how to turn on vw polo like you turn on yours, which pin should i connect to the battery positive ?
Watch the video
broken 2 4x4 steering pumps because of hard turning offroad, its time for the UPGRADE
you could wire it properly and have it start straight away without waiting
And burn the motor out?
Leigh nope it does work that way in stock astra lol
Can you imagine waiting for 30 seconds till you can drive car away lol
Yes. I let this car warm up before driving anyway. Its making around 1000kw and I'd never drive it cold.
@@leigh3924 yes aparently when You leave it with this slow build pressure mode they last longer but sometimes is anoying when you stall car during drifting and need to wait a bit for pressure to build up.
Hi just a quick question these astra pumps I see some people saying they are speed or pressure controlled. An example of you are driving faster the wheel requires less input is this true?
Feel as a normal car
awesome, thinking of doing same with an AU Falcon track car
Long live the mighty AU
What wires do you need i have 3
Watch the video
Great pump
Cheers big ears. Very helpful video. I’m just about to purchase one for my EH project.
Great video man. Thank you very much 💪
awesome, also have an xd, what model is the pump and where did you mount it, I'm thinking drivers side guard
On the firewall man
I bought one yesterday to hook up on my supercharged Hyundai Getz. Ha crazy turbine whine! The guy snipped one of them wires. It’s only got three. I sure hope this works!!
Cool video, now I can wire mine up, thanks heaps 👍
Hey bud good video, so yah just use my standard vl rack with this running it ? Thanks
Yeh bro
Damn that’s one noisy pump
Sounds mint
Great vid mate, thanks for that 👌🏽👌🏽
Astra pump eh? I might put one of those on my 4wd. My factory one is gear driven and it keeps leaking!!
What is an astra?
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_Astra
I’m in America. That’s probably gonna be hard to find. Any ideas? Car is a 87 foxbody notchback (coupe) mustang
@@larrytemen5114 they sell the Astra in the US but its called a Saturn Astra.
I have made a module for this pump to make it start immediately, there is two turbines inside there and one needs to start a few milliseconds after the other or it causes them to stall against each other
Would it be possble if could share how you did it? thanks
I got here looking for this hack.. would you mind sharing it?
If you connect the black wire to the red and give 12v to the blue/white a second later the pump goes to full speed straight away. Just use a delay circuit to power the blue /white
@@icyedge4704 Thanks a lot! Gonna try it
hello....you need to do a "jump" with black and blue wire, and put it on a positive terminal? I was thinging that was on negative terminal
Follow the video
Sounds cool! I've got one for my GTO. Way better than the MR2 pump.
what sort of electrical power drain are you experiencing with this at idle and at full lock?. I am interested in the conversion but already have twin electric fans, fuel pump etc and am wondering if my alternator will cope?
Running a 110amp alternator with no issues
@@leigh3924 I'm guessing my stock 75amp alternator won't work, question is how many more amps do I need to run this pump?
@@brianashley2880 it would depend on your system.
Is there anyway could be silence? so loud. Lol
Nah, that's it.
Is there any way to slow the pump down? 😊 Sounds squealing 😅
Nah, that's how they sound
Great sharing mate. Can I ask,is there any 'twitchyness'.. in it.. Or would u say there's 100% feedback..
Nope, you wouldn't even know its electric
What fluid are you using?
DEXIII
@@leigh3924 Hello, nice project. I´m doing the same. I would like to ask you: In your experience, have you had any leaks? I mean, due to incompatibility between the pump´s gaskets supposed requirement for synthetic oil (CHF 11) and the use of Dexron III. It´s a concern for me. Thanks.
@@leigh3924 Could you please report how this has held up and if you have any leaks using ATF/ Dex 3?
