Water based clay object construction: how to simplify objects so you can sculpt them accurately.
มุมมอง 703 หลายเดือนก่อน
I describe how to deconstruct an object into simple shapes by squinting. Simplify to 3 or 4 shapes that you can easily sculpt. Make sure you measure your proportions and object relationships. 1st find the primary shapes, 2nd find the secondary shapes, 3rd sculpt. I then demonstrate how I would start sculpting this project so I am setting myself up for success. Work general to specific, big shap...
Getting drawing ideas out quick, thumbnail poster studies of the landscape with pencil

I demonstrate how to drawing thumbnail drawings that are poster studies from references to better understand composition, value sets, and shapes. This is a great practice to get ideas out quickly and to determine readability with your finished art pieces. This is a practice I have my students do when they are trying to figure out what they want to paint or design for projects.

What would you do if Elsa from frozen saw this video?
I would ask her if she was low key or high key.
Do you need to lay glassine or tyvek on the face before rolling?
No, if the oil is cured it should be good, so long as you don't store it in a humid environment. The back of the linen wont get scratched, but I would place it in a tube for safe keeping so the canvas or art doesn't get marred.
wow! short and to the point! Thank you!
No problem, and thanks for watching.
❤❤❤❤
love it too
Really helpful; esp ; finished texture of the paint: been making mine so stiff it takes forever….gonna try your consistency. & the paper towel tip; small things can be revelatory… why didn’t I think of that? Will have to down grade my IQ by 10 points. Q? What size shape muller also you prefer? My muller slab is about same size: Like the rubber feet too. I wanted to get a porphyry one and a stone muller ; that was a hopeless quest… ☹️ Thanks!
Thanks for watching, my muller is 4 in. in diameter. If I am doing smaller batches I will use a 3 in muller. The larger the surface area the harder it is to mix the pigment but it takes less time. Happy paint making.
Where did he learn?
I have no idea.
Wow an actual and young Master in painting
yes he is.
Super helpful! Thank you!
Thanks for watching.
Beautiful!
Thank you
Thank you very much for the video. I have some doubts: You use some type of filler additive or stabilizer. When I made my paints I feel a separation of the oil and pigment. The paint behaves like honey when it comes out of the jar. Is there anything to be done to fix this? I am very grateful
I do not use any additives, you need to use less oil if it is like honey. That is why I try to stay on the stiff side of paint instead of wet. Lead white will become more viscus if you have too much oil. I would try 1 part oil to 4 parts pigment and mill it in really good. Some people will mill the pigment with oil. Let the paint stand in open air for a week and then mill it again so it can be more stable. It takes time, keep trying.
@@flack_studio Okay, I'll do it. Thanks for the answer
Great form!!
Thanks!!
What would happen if Jon singer Sargent saw this video?
He would probably tell me not to live stream it and throw it away :)
That's not very nice of him
Great video McGarren!
Thanks Brandon!!
Are there any furries in thease landscapes
yes, if you look at the details closely you will see it behind the trees :)
Wooooow
Well thank you. I love it too.
All I can say is wow
Yes, he is stunning.
How long does it stay good in the tube?
I don't know, I usually use it all up within a year or two, so it should last longer than that. I have seen some tube paints last 20 years or so.
Thank you so much for giving us the colors you used to blend in this painting. Question: when you used raw umber with white to make the more gray tones for the rock shadows, did you use titanium white or a transparent white (blending white)? I'm really struggling with how to get the colors I want for my own red rock paintings. I paint in acrylic paint. Also, you mentioned a couple of times a color . . . peraline red? Perimine red? Also, you mentioned `king' blue? Not familiar with either of those colors . . . could you clarify it for me? Thanks! When you made the value of the sky lighter as you went closer to the red rock, what color did you use to do that? Did you use the yellow and/or white? We've been to Fire Valley many times. It is an amazing place. We also love Sedona and St. George, Utah area. We used to live in Ivins, Utah which is very close to Snow Canyon NP. Check that out some time, you'll love it. We lived in a community by the name of Kayenta which is a huge art colony with an art village and art events. We love the scenery there and it is in my soul; I'm always trying to paint red rock scenes but have just struggled with the color blending (learning without lessons is not easy. lol) I so appreciate the free tutorial videos on TH-cam, including yours. Many artists do not give the colors they are using. It also helps beginners to see the process of the blending on the palette. I am like you, too, in that I like to put my color right on the canvas and do the blending there, especially when I'm using a palette knife to paint. I love the textures I can get with the palette knife. Thanks again.
No, I mostly use Lead white for my paintings, sometimes I will use Titanium white, but never transparent white, it has zinc in it and for oil paints zinc is no good. Yes Peraline Red is what I use and Kings Blue it is a mixture of various blues only a couple of manufactures make it, but it is a good light value. All I did is add white to the kings blue to get the lighter value in the sky, even thought their is a shift in hue, it is mostly a value shift. Yes, I have been to Snow Canyon, love it, I live in St. George I visit the places often. I agree with the textures, it is unbeatable with a palette knife..... keep painting!!
@@flack_studio I wonder if the same applies to acrylic paint (for titanium white)? So cool that you live in St. George. We used to live in Ivins, in Kayenta. Loved the scenery there but HATED the summers there which last like 7 months. And winters were too cold and spring too windy. lol We love being outdoors but found that we could rarely enjoy being out in our yard with the weather there. I guess we were spoiled by living 30 years in northern California. We retired to San Diego -- can't beat the weather here. Thank you for your help. There are not many artists out there painting red rock, so I really enjoyed your video. It was very helpful to me.
@@flack_studio I'd love to see you do a demo using a palette knife, too. That is very new to me also and there are not many tutorials on how to paint using one.
Love this tutorial. Just found your channel 😊. Can u do a tutorial on bushes and trees? Like from a landscape. It's so much info. I'd like to know how to break it down to how to get to the details. Hopefully this will be helpful to other artists. Thank you much 🎨
Thanks for watching. I am making a video on brushes and will release it soon, I can work on a video with painting trees. Best,
does removing the painting off the stretcher make the paint crack or shrink? i am a poor artist so I have to reuse the same stretcher multiple times but im curious if the painting will be affected by "unstretching" it
Yes, the longer it is not stretched the more it will crack, the more change you store your painting on canvas in humid or temp changing environments also makes it crack.
If I see this brick, I might think it's chocolate and eat it by axadent
That sounds traumatic.
Thanks. Now that you've gone through all that work, it would be good to see how you apply same values on a painting, so that us beginners can better understand the purpose of this excercise.
I agree, this is just a beginning exercise, if you can master it without using a value swatch you will do much better with color. I will work on making a bridge video from this content to a poster study to a finished piece.
whoaaa so pretty~
Thanks!
I would be very appreciative of a video on how to make lead white. Its quite hard to come by in the US.
I am in progress of making one. It will be a while though. I have a couple of clips on facebook about how to make it.

So true!!
His art now seems disturbingly hopeful if that makes sense.
He is mixing it up, guessing he got bored with the romantic pieces. Now they are more post modern.
Guessing the correct term may be "unmounting" a canvas? Great video, thank-you
I like that term a lot more. Thanks.
what brand paints and brushes do you use?
Mostly Trekell, sometimes Rosemary.
Every time I paint the paint slides on the canvas. It’s very annoying and I have no idea what I did with, maybe the canvas is not absorbent enough. Ahhhhhhh I don’t know
If it is oil based it will be slick, use softer brushes like a sable to get paint on there and to make it stay. Or, do your painting in multiple layers so the paint sticks better. Watch my scumbling and glazing video.
I dont really like the hair much, could be softer. Incredible work though
Thanks for the feedback.
Apologies if my comment came off cold. To elaborate, there is just so much wonderful subtlety going on in the face that i find is neglected in the hair giving it a very stiff feel@@flack_studio

I love that you’ve painted a ‘normal’ woman, I see a lot of artists paint only women with big lips & big eyes, but the features of this woman seem familiar to me - as if I’ve seen here on the street (may be due to not living in a very make-up dependent country)
it’s a commission, so it’s likely of the person who requested it or of their loved one. it looks realistic because it’s a real person.
Thank you and I agree!
That looks really cool
Thanks
Looks incredible! I wish I could paint like that man!
You can, just give it a try. :)
