Swarmed By Thousands of Butterflies on Sacajawea Peak in the Wallowas Oregon
Standing on the summit of Sacajawea Peak in in the Wallowa Mountains in Eastern Oregon, my only company was thousands of butterflies! It was surreal as they all fluttered about and almost distracted me from the incredible views that I went up there for.
The hike to Sacajawea Peak via Ice Lake and The Matterhorn is a ~22 mile trip with 6500 feet of elevation gain.

Such a beautiful mountain for its size which isn’t high at all compared to the peaks up north and east
Great hike! How long approximately did it take to do both peaks?
Hey! This time took us 5 hours 12 minutes elapsed time that day. We did have a couple of longer breaks in the day, but I would say this is probably still a good estimate for both peaks. Have fun!
Just camped on flat iron the other night. Can confirm there’s shitloads of people during the day u have to usually wait on, however if u climb it during the night like me and my buddy did u have the entire mountain to yourself, didnt see anyone until 10 in the morning
you can camp on it?
@@CauseImPresidentyup! It’s legal
Haha Nailed it! Flatiron is definitely an early-morning-on-a-weekday hike, or you'll be stuck in "lines" of hikers all day!
Fuuuuck all dat
Did those three hikes myself last year! Loved them
Awesome! That is a really cool area - I love how close it is to the other side of Red Mountain! Thanks for checking it out, cheers!
Beauteful mountain landscape, great sharing 👌👌👌 greetings 👍😊
Beauteful mountain landscape, great sharing 👌👌👌 greetings 👍😊
Thanks for the video. This peak has been taunting me for far too long and i want to climb it this winter. I am wondering, were there any obsticals to get to where you parked, like gates or sand pits? Ive read online that one road to get to the optimal parking has those to pass through so 4wd is recommended. Any information on the road would be appreciated :)
Thanks for checking it out, I hope the information is helpful with your climb! It is definitely not a small undertaking, but it is also definitely doable. In the description, I have included a link for the route, which includes not just the hiking route but also the driving route. I have tried many different "roads" to get to the parking area and the route I included on the map is the only way that has no gates. There were definitely some sandy areas and they can get pretty soft, but as long as it is dry you shouldn't need 4WD (although I always like having the confidence of AWD). I would recommend high clearance though - something like an Outback or Rav4 should be fine. Let me know if you have any more questions, and let me know when you make it to the top!
Those chairs were on Dome Mountain. Last time I went up there they were gone! I was sad
Good eye! Yeah those chairs on top of Dome Mountain are one of my all time favorite summit moments! That is definitely a bummer to hear they aren't there any more. Maybe we'll have to lug a couple back up! Cheers, glad to have you along!
Thanks for this! I’ve been looking for a way up, hoping there would be a social trail or something. Doesn’t look like it. Plan to follow your guide soon
You're welcome, thanks for checking it out! This was definitely a tough one, and I also hoped the entire time that I would find a nice solid use path, but it never happened. This was two years ago, though, so maybe it has gotten a little more worn down now. Let me know when you make it up and how the conditions are, I wouldn't mind trying again!
Watch for snakes near the river
Great advice! I prefer to only go out there during the winter when it's less likely to encounter them 🐍
They are every where down there. Not uncommon to see them right on the trail.@@nboswell216
It looks more like your face. 😂😂
😂
curious about the manzanita and at what point you started to encounter it. Seems like it went at least half way up from when you started going up the ridge-line but when did it first start to get thick?
The manzanita was thick off and on pretty much immediately once we left the trail. It was pretty patchy, so we had periods of pretty thick (but still passable) followed by wide open areas. Once we were about 400 vertical feet from the summit, it opened up completely. The ridge is definitely the way to go though, going through the wash was brutal.
<3<3<3 We love this trail! Great video. Really great footage.
Thanks for checking it out! This is one of my all time favorite quick hikes!
Beauteful mountain landscape, great sharing 👌👌👌 greetings 👍😊
Thanks for checking it out! The Wallowas are indeed a beautiful place!
Is the prominence the elevation gain of the trail?
That's a great question! Sometimes it is similar, especially in places like the Cascades, but often it does not correlate. Prominence is actually a measure of how much taller a mountain is than those around it. Technically, it is the difference between it's own summit elevation and the elevation of the lowest point on the highest ridge between itself and the next highest mountain. Basically, if you were going to walk from one mountain to it's parent, it would be the least elevation loss possible before going back uphill. Check out en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topographic_prominence for a more thorough description! Cheers!
What a stunning scenery 🔥🔥
Thanks so much for checking it out! This one was shot years ago just on a phone, but it seems like even then I had the same way of narrating my summit videos 😄

Could you please share the type of day pack / vest you're wearing, it looks very light which is what I'll need when I try this hike in November.
This is a Salomon Adv Skin vest, in the 5L size! It is a wonderful vest for adventures like this one! It supports both front water flasks, as well as a hydration bladder on the back! Cheers!

Thanks so much for watching! Quartz Peak is one of my favorites! I love how quiet it is out in the Sierra Estrella's.
@@OptimisticProminence can the trail be a loop or only back and forth? i subscribed to your channel could you do a white tank mountains video this year? ty for what u do
@@jesurunblends great question! As far as I know, this can only be done as an out and back. The entire area out there is pretty unsupported, so there is a very small network of trails, including this one that is only out and back. For sure, I definitely hope to make it back to Arizona this year, and if I do, I'll make it over to the White Tanks! Barry Goldwater peak, the highest point of the White Tanks, took me two tries back in the day, so there is definitely value in creating a video for that one! Cheers!
Nice sharing friend stay connected 👍♥️🌹🌷
Thanks so much for watching! Have you been to Council Crest before?
W❤️W! That’s Awesome! Cheers for more exciting and incredible adventures!🥂❤️✨
Thanks so much for checking it out! It was a fun local adventure, those are some of the best ones! Cheers!
I'll be in Arizona next week when I visit my family. Their house is 3 miles from the park and I plan to hike all the trails in the park. Thanks for the video, I will definitely use the tips. It will be something different because now I go on a winter hike because I live in Catskill NY. Happy New Year!
Have so much fun! The entire San Tan park is a lot of fun and the trails are great! Let me know how you like them, and if you make it up to Goldmine Mountain!
Great video! Thanks for taking us on this adventure. We still haven’t done this one. Will have to add to our list before we hit the road 🤙🏽 love that you went trail running in the snow

Thanks so much! It's fun making them for sure, and I'm glad to share some of the more obscure climbs out there!

This one was actually in February! I've been in most other months of the year, but I prefer winter as long as it isn't snowing!

@@mikebaeza8902 thanks so much! It really is a wonderful place, I'm actually heading there tomorrow for some trail work! Thanks for watching!
any links on getting to the top and the location on driving there?
Yeah! If you look in the video description, you will see a link to the map on CalTopo. On that map, I included both my up and down routes (I recommend using only the up route), and I also put the driving route to the start point on that map! Let me know if you have any other questions, it's definitely a tricky project.
the face appears much clearer when you hike the trail on the back side of smith Rock looking back at the pinnacle.
It is definitely fun to see it from all perspectives - one of the many great things about the Misery Ridge loop!
@@OptimisticProminence wasn't trolling ya bro. I love Smith rock. Heck, all of eastern oregon for that matter. Peace bro.
Some place - Brilliant! 👌👌
Thanks for checking it out! Looks like you are always in a pretty damp climate, do you ever make it to desert places like this?
Ha, no, not in Scotland, about once every 30 years 😉its not so bad we get about 4 weeks of summer (28C low 80's F if we are lucky or there abouts) most of the time on the hills is looking for flat AND dry camp spots...not an easy task! We do get the beauty of lush green vegetation for that compromise. Been to New Jersey Once (about 100F) and Lanzarote (in the Canary islands many times) warm volcanic and closest I get to a desert. Death Valley is on the bucket list though 👌👌
@@ALochOnTheWildSide Death Valley is amazing! And if you get high enough, it actually is pretty nice weather - when I climbed Telescope Peak there it was actually in the 50s F! Your weather actually sounds quite nice! I have a lot of Scottish in my family history, and I am always hot, it seems!
Nice, our highest peak in UK (all the highest are in Scotland) is Ben Nevis at just over 1300m, Telescope over 3000m - do you need a guide for that? is there any water sources? is it dangerous as in ropes or anything? or anything else to be worried about? dangerous animals? I would figure it out before I go but a wee heads up would let me know if it was doable (can you wild camp say half way without hassle or a permit or anything?) - Cheers! Dave 👍👍
@@ALochOnTheWildSide it is high in elevation, but otherwise is a pretty straightforward hike! I ran it in just a couple hours. It is only about 16k round trip distance. The only trick would be needing a high clearance vehicle to get to the trailhead! Camping may not be legal up there, but you could definitely ask about it, but also for only 15k, probably wouldn't need to camp. I think there is a campground near the trailhead though! It's definitely a good one, and I certainly hope to make it to Ben Nevis at some point in my life, I've heard it's a good one!
Awesome climb ⛰️

I climbed it in the 90’s. So nice to see it again!
That's amazing! What time of year did you get to climb it? Did you ever get to go during wildflower season?
@@OptimisticProminence I don’t remember the time of year, but it wasn’t when the wildflowers were blooming. Lived in Skamania County till 1999. I do miss the beautiful Columbia River Gorge! 🌲💕

DId you find the summit log ammo box?
I don't remember seeing a summit register! I usually spend time looking for the benchmark, but I don't usually look for registers. Have you made it up to this one before?
@@OptimisticProminence Ya I have done this one probably 3 times. I added an additional notebook last time to the register bc it was so full. You were literally standing on top it basically if you found the geo survey markers.
@@HikingAZ that's good to know, for sure! I don't usually sign them so maybe I did see it but just didn't pay attention. This is a really fun peak, and usually quiet too!
