Nice interview, very helpful!!
Thank you, loved being Interviewed! ❤
insightful conversation and i feel mainframes follow lindy effect i guess.
Great conversation with Dusty, glad to see someone who's been in the mainframe field for 47 years and is also open to the new methods and technology that's being intergrated with the Mainframe. At my place of work all the elder mainframers are very resistant to anything open source or anything that is not done through a 3270 emulator. It's been a struggle.
Question. Where do i start to learn mainframe and cobol, do learn both at same time, where do i start. What should i concentrate on
Oh you guys still have webinar
This discussion really helps me. I was beginning to feel stupid for bit. Cobol workflow is more natural to me
for the ones following the IBM free training in COBOL, on 1:30 "lets create a new profile" you have to go to the left on VS code and click on the Z icon , and you are going to be able to set a new profile, then do as explained on the video, and finish on Lab 1 Guide for IBM
what about the url part ? Which one do i put ?
Where can I find the correct URL?
There are thousands of us Old Retired COBOL Mainframe programmers. We know COBOL, we know ISPF, we know JCL. Is there a quick way for us to get on a mainframe portal (is that what Zowe is) to compile source code. If so, we could help struggling students.
I remember using IMS also. The reason we used it was to do On-Line screens. The BTS screens were tedious but it was all FUN ! Used IMS online during day and then batch processing at night. Then went with DB2 for some of the databases.. thanks for the memories. Yes it was IMS DB/DC !
Very interesting
Very valuable insights
I am proud to be a fellow Pinoy programmer. I retired 2014 and now actively going for mainframe modernization. Open source is the future.
Cool
Just a retired mainframe SysProg (2019) popping in - getting a surprise. Although I retired supporting z/OS, I also supported z/VSE and z/VM in the not-too-distant past. I was moderately surprised to see that IBM did finally retire their involvement in the DOS/VS(E) environment. I am glad that it will live on under 21st Century Software. (I thought that IBM would keep it as a z/VM Only Guest OS. I guess that I was wrong.)
I changed my device and now the connection to z/os option wont appear. Please help
Please, next time I am a Mainframer with Ray Overby
where do you download cobol check?
Cut the music track out please
I WORKED WITH COBOL THEN RPG-II AND PL/I. I ALSO WORKED WITH ADPAC CORP FOR ADPAC PROGRAMMING AND I ALSO WORKED WITH ALC AND BAL. I TOOK FORTRAN, PASCAL, C, C++ ETC...I WORKED WITH CICS, IMS AND DB2 AND IDMS. YOU CAN LINK TO ME ...I WORKED AT IBM SANTA TERESA LAB IN SAN JOSE AS A VENDOR WHEN I WAS IN SAP.
Can someone please give me access to a mainframe? I choose COBOL in 1989 under DOS 3.3 (over DBase III +, which rest of my classmates choose as they feared COBOL compiler errors) but ah never got my hands on a mainframe.
I choose COBOL under DOS 3.3 in 1989 (and learned, while my classmates left due to it's difficulties) over DBase III +. Ah but never got a chance to work on a mainframe, otherwise my carrier have gone to different path.
For those of us who are old 3090 analyast developers this is a steep learning curve. is there any chat features available or some way to communicate the best way to get over the initial hurdles?
Well I am finding vs code to be very intimidating and very overly complex I'm trying to get back into the business after being retired for 15 years and I'm finding it to be almost impossible to figure out what the heck is going on. I signed up for the IBM course for vs code Mainframe but they never sent me any credentials to log on. from what I am seeing the microfocus Cobol and opencobolIDE are a much better thought out solution but that just might be me being frustrated😢
Are these steps applicable for SuSE 12 SP4 x86_64?
Thanks everyone for the great video!
Excellent 🎉
I’ve been taking IBM lessons with Zxplore using the Zowe extension in VS code. All of the sample programs have been written in Cobol. Can Zowe submit a jcl job that runs SAS code?
The answer would be "Yes !". All of the COBOL programs are compiled using JCL and it is possible to submit this from a data set member with the right mouse click menu action "Submit Job" directly against the JCL source. This can run SAS code if the JCL is written to do so.
Great work issacto 🙌
I have clicked the second "Thumb up" :) - are there any Z/OS emulators available? i am not going to pay twice for the brand :). Ok Power9,10 and OpenCAPI are a thing but still :)
Thank you guys.
ZazaReen, from Teacher to Professor. Goooo Mustangs.
Good initiative that kind of podcast, he brings motivation to involve in Mainframe journey
Hope I will be the next Mainframer😊
regarding JCL highlighting (colouring), 1. are the choice of colours optional. 2. Historical usage of JCL has them being stored in .CNTL datasets.
First?
I love Cam!
Oh wow~
As an old-timer Z/OS SysProg now testing the waters with ZOWE 2.7 install via SMPE, and then configuration setup, the future PARMLIB and non-USS setup support will be a real help considering the many UAT & PROD systems here. talking more than 40 systems.
Hi Michael… could you post a link to the GitHub repos?
I think I am gonna switch to COBOL , definitely ! I studied COBOL when I was in university , Long time ago , but never had a chance to work with it . I whish I did
