This video shows the remarkable CHESTER WHITMORE recreating the dancing in the 1929 film short After Seben. Chester is introduced by Chazz Young, Frankie Manning's son. As part of 2009 live performance at Frankie95, Chazz pretends he is introducing the original film. For that reason he identifies the dancer as "James Barton," an actor who appeared in the original film. Make no mistake, the amazing dancer in this video is none other than Chester Whitmore!

Wondering who puts up the text explanations underneath the video I’d love to get in touch with them and ask them to add Chester Whitmore’s name as the performer who says he’s James Barton

OK so I just looked at this again I thought how could James Barton be dancing like this? He would be so much older Frankie I went back and looked at it again and again and oh my God it’s Chester it’s Chester… well now I’m celebrating all three of you guys. Happy new year what a great gift how much I love the movie After Seben .. That’s how I found this video. I was revisiting the movie which I often do.

Is that Chester Whitmore? Sure moves like him, plus Chester is sort of a dance historian for a lot of the Savoy legendaries. He's pretty darn incredible himself too; humble about his skill. Such a nice fella if you see him out n about in LA definitely ask him for a dance!

In Malcolm X you see Spike Lee is yelled at by some woman on the dancefloor, "Hey Shorty". Right after that the camera turns to a male dancer doing the "Shorty George". I asked Frankie Manning (who did the choreography for the film) if he had done that on purpose, but he said no.

I played Bass Trombone in the Riverside Big Band in the Detroit area about 15 years ago. Frankie was teaching for a group of Lindy Hop fans. It was a special night. He could still swing it on the dance floor. An American Icon!

This is an absolutely amazing piece of dance history. I saw him many years ago when the University of Houston hosted a swing dance festival but I was too shy to approach him..I was outside of one of our studios and he was inside either just finishing up or about to start a class. I REGRET not saying something to him. I could have met him! lol I will use this in my classes!!
