My Rotec radial engine story

The video is about my experience with Rotec R3600 radial engine and Rotec Company. Sad but true.

Second day of the ground tests. Pretty cold December day: -2 C... Nice sound of the Rotec R3600. Enjoy :)
Wow
😂😂😂😂😂😂i love your warning at begining 😊 XX❤
Yes. All picturs of parts are either a high time engine or poor metalurgy, machining or just plain bad crafstmanship with the wrenches. I believe you nay have an alcohol problem. Not in the fuel, but fueling the factory in Australia. There is a fix for that. My Grandmother worked as a nurse in one. It's called the alcholisum ward. I'm too old to wrench, I want to fly. So, Lycoming, Continental or maybe a simular reputation. Thank for the video and the caveat.
The entire correspondence makes me believe ROTEC is a retail front for a Chinese Manufacture.....Probable had children assembling these engines from old parts scavenged from a WWII military bone yard.... The ROTEC contact was not qualified (certainly not sales response) However, knew enough about engine parts .....to be Dangerous !!!!!
Get a Verner engine.
Rotec should be banned from doing business in the United States.
There is too much crap in this one !
Rotec is impressively incompetent.
I worked with this imbecile at Rotec (Paul Chernikeeff, owner) and he is only an auto electrician without any qualifications. His brother designed the engine, initially, as a hobby engine and then bailed out after things went wrong. Paul is stupid and very dishonest, a dangerous combination. He is designing a CDI for the ignition in the most dodgy way. I tried to convince him to design it properly for safety however, he ignored me. I would never consider one of his engines for use in any aircraft. He uses unskilled workers to reduce costs and the manufacture/assembly suffers due to this.
You wont do that again !
I own a repair shop and am a mechanic by trade. On every job I do, I stake my entire reputation. If I replaced a part that didn't need replacing, or if I broke it? I pay for it. If my diagnostic process was flawed in a way that resulted in excessive diagnostic time? I bill for how long it should have taken me if I were on top of my game. This Rotec dude? This is criminal. I would be ashamed to ever produce something this poorly made, let alone sell it to someone who stakes their life on it. Now, even if I made something brilliant, it is inevitable that the first generation will discover issues through product usage. I fully accept the realities of building a complex machine that requires tight tolerances and repeatability. But the number and level of issues presented, and the absolute disdain for sound practices and clients, is beyond palatable.
You are clearly a very competent mechanic. Air cooled aircraft engines are not unlike classic motorcycles. Here in the UK we have companies like Molnar who produce Manx Norton engines for racing. They are bullet proof and oil tight. CP Carrillo give many details on bore clearances and honing methods. They never advise flexi hones as they can't run concentric. Piston ring gap, bore clearance, and actually 'centrality' of the conrod in the bore is worth checking. My old Vincent has had many problems and always learning from my mistakes. However manufacturers cannot enjoy this freedom. Fly safe.
Nice job!!
Rotec are junk, so many stories like this. The fact that the owners think this is a sustainable business model is alarming.
I think they have changed the way they do things now. Royce is a much better company now and have learned from their ways. I’m sure if you bought a Rotax now you would not see any problems as they are constantly improving their product and processes,
You completely messed company names, its not about RR or Rotax. By any chance, is there chinese capital behind Rotec?
That's a lot of money to risk your life on. Would you fly behind a rotec
I'll never go near one of their engines!
Same here.
Respect to your persistence and shame on Rotec. I dream of a light plane with Rotary engine too, but after I saw that, it will sure not be a Rotec !!!!
Look into verner
Rotec is Crap
I would be extremely embarrassed if this was the quality of my engines. I could never let this go unnoticed to other owners. I wouldn’t have even released the engine without doing many long tests.. It is possible to do a good and simple home on the cylinders with said tool. However, something else clearly needs to be done. A “simple hone” wouldn’t fix it. He seems very unprofessional. I would have gone with a AI 14 or M14P instead at that point. Far more reliable than rotec. It looks like you did very good work. I hope you grind the rotec name off the rocker covers at some point.
Garbage
Never buy a Rotec engine. They have substandard parts, are problematic, and they use used parts in their so called “new” engines, and send used parts for warranty replacement. They are money pits.
I would have machined the Rotec name off the rocker covers!
Wow, that is shockingly bad product and even worse responses.. they sold you a f-ing lemon and left it to you to fix it, that is abominable!! This is the second such review I'm reading and it makes them look pathetic.
You know things are hairy when they super glue critical engine parta together. You cant make this up 😅
You know that thigs are f#d up when the first flight and there is 20 minutes of video left. Sad really.
Why no audio ,waste of time watching
You realize he is Polish right? He may not know English so he used a translator. He did a darn great job in my eyes. The pictures he took and the text he presented say it all.
Does ANYONE have a positive history with Rotec? Anyone?
WOW! Basically going by his answers and lack of care to your issues I can say I was looking at a Rotec engine but now 😯🤣🤣🤣🤣 NO F**K'IN WAY!.... THANX!
No Pratt & Whitney quality, that's for sure
I was looking to buy a 3600, thank you for this video, I am an engine rebuilder and build engine for drag racing, and when I see these pistons and cylindres wall scored, if the answer from the manufacturer is right about cleaning piston with a scotchbrite and and not re-boring the cylindres and installing oversized piston, the engineer in this Rotec business are DUMMED and they don't have any clue how a piston engine works, UNREAL!
The problems you get from dealing with humans, is that they are - well - humans.
That's the dumbest thing I've heard in response to this video. No some humans suck and some don't. No one is equal to anyone else
thats incredibly really O.O
Watching seven minutes of this has put me off Rotec for life - many thanks!
th-cam.com/video/ZIjh4o9QjtY/w-d-xo.html
Your airplane is beautiful. Congratulations. But, ROTEC....they should be ashamed of their responses. Unreal. Disgraceful.
Wow, totally unacceptable quality and treatment. Looks like Rotec is sliding down a slippery slope to closing doors.
I would have shaved the name off the rocker covers and put my own name on after all that work.
As a fellow pilot of Experimental aircraft, the stories associated with this company absolutely terrify me.
So many horrible stories about this company I don't know where to start.
Maybe you were talking to the Rotec lawn mower engine dept by mistake? Painful story. Better to separate and live than to trust your life to these clowns.
I had two 2800s. I received the same treatment. I saved all the emails and correspondence including the threat of lawsuit. (My attorney told me if they sued we'd more than likely wind up owning Rotec). I'm a A&P and a 32000 hr retired airline pilot. I grew weary of the insults and degradations.
This is such a shame! It could be a great product but what you received was dangerous and you should have got a full refund and new Engine!
I have seen better engineering and QC on Chinese Moped engines.
I was gonna say the same thing till I saw your post, except, I’ve purchased Chinese mower engines with much better workmanship/quality.
Who l certified Rotec radials for AIR CRAFT ? I don't think I would have one on an airboat . Nice looking motor but .
Boo on Rotec, right? Maybe you should have read the manual.
I'm shocked you were able to hire and A&P. I sure as heck wouldn't put my name on this knowing the issues. Liability and a half
I rode about so many problems with this engine and this company.
As an Australian this is very embarrassing .
Wow!!!
Thamks for posting I am not going to buy the two my Bro and I for our planes, one of us would die with this engine
