I've learned after buying several custom bass strings that adding a few 1/1,000ths to the size given by the micrometer helps ensure a nice bright tone. Before I did that, I often wound up with strings that didn't really come alive unless I brought them up about a ½ tone further than intended. I believe that it's better to have a string that might possibly be on the bright side, and correct that by manipulating the hammer, rather than try to somehow add brightness to a string.

really good lesson!..I have done this many times exactly the same way..I was taught by a tech ONCE! and then did hundreds thereafter with no problems EVER!..
