They can be extremely stout if built for it, but many people didn't bother investing in their hulls at all, because: 1) It can add a lot of mass, affecting flight performance and jump range 2) Top level armor was extremely expensive 3) Shield tanking was extremely overpowered and effectively blocked all damage, thus making armor upgrades extremely redundant unless someone takes the several minutes it takes to drop your shield 4) Because shield tanking was so stupendously powerful, you often had all the time in the world to realize you were losing the fight and casually escape well before your shield actually broke, leading to armor literally going nothing over the course of the whole fight.

@@Frenotx Essay moment, but in all seriousness you're right. I used to fly an anaconda before switching over to the mamba and I maxed shields which was effective. In res zones if my shields were low or down I would fly a bit away and just fly around in a fighter. Mamba is my favorite combat ship but I haven't the corvette yet so who knows. Big ships are great but medium ships are more fun.

@@transfate Mediums are fun. My favorite ship was always ultimately my Viper IV, though!

@@Frenotx Nice, I've never flown that ship before. It's always been the krait mk2 for me before I got the conda and the mamba.

Multicrew gives you an extra pip. My husband was flying one of my fighters. I don't know if this is still the case; haven't played in years.

For the fun and challenge, of course! I found mining in solo / private group to generally be quite dull, unless doing so in a haz res.

I was playing with a twin joystick setup, but I don't play anymore.

Lots of people skimp on hull because of how absurdly overpowered shield tanking and shield cell banks are. Hull is expensive to upgrade, heavy, and only ever really relevant if your shield goes down. It took an incredible amount of damage to get though his shield and SCBs. That was the case at the time, at least. It's been years since I've played, so I don't know the current state of affairs.

Didn't even pay for my ammo. XD The PvP bounty system in Elite: Dangerous was a bit of a joke. It was good for a while, but people used to to transfer credits to other people, save Frontier was incapable of figuring out how to solve that problem without making PvP bounties garbage.

Him protecting his cargo more than makes up for the tiny bounty.

@@blakeks8520 The reason I mined (I don't play anymore) the way I did was explicitly for the risk and excitement. Elite Dangerous has no shortage of ways to make money without risk- finding fun and excitement can be a little more challenging at times.

Indeed. The SLF, and especially the turrets, just weren't implemented in the best of ways. Worked out for me alright though; my husband didn't play very often, and this didn't have great gear to himself. It often made sense for him to just use my fighter when he occasionally wanted to play along with me.

Hazardous Resource Extraction Sites don't have cops, or at least didn't at the time.
