Painting Time-Lapse: Traditionally Sculpting Kusuriuri part 02
More work on my Kusuriuri figure from Mononoke. Materials and whatnot listed below for those interested.
Polymer Clay: CosClay Doll, Faerie Light, Soft. Can be purchased here: www.cosclay.com/
Tools are basic cheap sculpting/clay tools from different sets. A razor. A push pin. Some modeling wire. Wire cutters. Scissors. Basic paint brush for washing.
Optional drug store/corner store basics: Non-stick parchment paper, plastic wrap, tin foil/aluminum foil, 91% rubbing alcohol.
Personal Opinions/Review on the Clay.
I prefer CosClay to Sculpey. CosClay is nontoxic and has never burned for me. It's mixed with some plastic so very thin/fine areas retain flexability after being baked. It takes longer to bake. Sculpey bakes for 15 minutes per 1/4 inch, CosClay bakes for 30. Both bake at the same temp. It takes to an alcohol wash really well and bakes really smooth so you don't have to worry about sanding afterward if you don't want to. It has a consistency similar to puddy when working with the soft which I prefer but keeps its shape well and sticks to itself well. It smells. It smells raw and it smells when baked, much stronger and much more obvious than Sculpey. I was really surprised by this. There's no smell after it's baked. It just smells like clay. Whereas Sculpey tends to streak and needs sanded after baking to come out smooth. It very easily burns and it dries out quickly. It sometimes has trouble sticking to itself. It's also toxic. I still use Sculpey on and off.
There are lots of other clays I want to try one day. I'd like to try different types of Sculpey as well. Need money first. Think I'd like air-dry a lot though. In terms of Polymer Sculpting Clay there are a bunch of different options out there. Some discount and 99 cent stores even sell it so if it's something you're interested in trying out it shouldn't be too hard to grab some.
Warnings/Precautions: Obviously take basic safety measures when working with any of this stuff especially if you have pets! Don't let your pets get too close or leave them alone with any of this out. Clays can be toxic and deadly and alcohol, plastic, foil, sharp knives, thumb tacks, none of these things should be left out for your pet to get into and could cause serious injury, surgery to remove if ingested, or death. Be responsible.

For those interested I'm sculpting with CosClay Doll clay, color, Faerie Light: www.cosclay.com/ The head and left hair has already been baked. I have plastic wrap over the body because it hasn't been baked yet. Additional information for those interested: All brushes used were default blender brushes. The Main brushes I use to sculpt are the Elastic Deform brush to shape the ball. This feels closest to traditional when working with soft/medium clay. I add and cut with the Draw brush. For fine detail cuts like you'd get with a razor or hook tool traditionally I use a combination of either the draw brus...

YOUR WISH HATH COME TRUE
Yes! The animation was beautiful. I kinda wish they hadn't cut so much of the manga out and spent a bit more time building up the end but it was still just nice to see it more fully animated.
EXCELLENT
I dunno if I mentioned it in the description area or not but there's also a Grease Pencil Tools ad-on you can install in blender now that another artist made that comes with a pop-out camera mirror you can tick on/off from the side tool menu pop out, if you wanted to do that instead. : )
Thank you!!
Very welcome : 3
THANK YOU
No prob. : )
tysm! Flipping is so important for checking proportions - I was surprised it didn't have a default shortcut
Very welcome! Yeah, Grease Pencil is still a bit lacking on the art essential side but it's still newish and Blender is always doing major updates so I'm sure it'll get up to speed eventually. : ) There was an add-on you could enable for Grease Pencil, I can't remember what it was called, Grease Pencil Essentials maybe, that did a camera flip from the top right side pop-out menu and linked a transform mesh so you could press ctrl+t to warp your drawing like most drawing softwares. I couldn't find it to turn it on in 4.2 LTS version though T_T .They mentioned they took out a lot of add-ons that weren't by Blender themselves from that version to clear up space. You can still get them and download them into Blender if you wanted a camera flip instead though : ) Or just use 4.1 and enable it or just apply a flip to the camera, there are lots of different ways : )
Cool track! I am playing NieR Replicant now and it has similar style soundtracks :)
Thanks a lot! I love Yoko Taro's stories! They always manage to pull on my heartstrings. I've played all of the games from Drag on Dragoon, which was renamed Drakenguard 1-3 and Both Niers now. I haven't played Replicant yet because it was a remake for Gestalt but it's on my list! I've always really enjoyed the music in all of them too and own a couple of the soundtracks so this makes me happy to read ^_^ Hope you have fun with it!
@@JaeHaruArt Yeah, sure. The story is good. I will play next NieR game too!
I love the chirping and subtle sounds in the background too :)💝
Thanks very much! That was a bit tricky to 'play' out those sounds. They were registered as another instrument sound you very much did have to play them from the keyboard input too. Taking my finger off the note suddenly made that kind of fast buzzing sound you hear that almost sounds like bugs. Then I tweaked it to sections I liked and moved it around a bit. Def a more interesting type of sound to try to produce lol. But I wanted to map's track to have nature sounds so it came out how I wanted in the end.
😍
Thank you so much this was very helpful! I didn't know about the image rotation feature
You're very welcome and happy I could help : 3
This is so great. Thank you 🖤🤍
Thank you for the nice comment. I'm happy you liked it. I learned a lot working on it : )
@@JaeHaruArt I also saw you had a video on how you did this. I will check out later 😊🙏
@@chellastation Yes, though it's more of a commentary than a tutorial, please feel free to and I appreciate it <3 If you are interested in animating with Blender's Grease Pencil workspace, I do have a proper tutorial on how to easily use it under my tutorials playlist animating a little ghost boy instead : 3

Short overview of the work that went into the video aspects of this for those interested. All footage was cut, rearranged and retimed. Added a slow pan-out/zoom-out to the birds in the intro. Added the title text. Added a slow pan/zoom into the opening text for a tunnel effect. The man walking on the beach along with the sand falling from his hand was color graded with low saturation to match visually. Added high spots to the sand falling from his hand with Glint effects. The close-up footage of the blonde: Added lighting effects and glow to the edges of the hair, added a flickering blur effect, added a white vignette and blur around the edges. Footage of the couple holding hands has been lightened to look more like daytime and saturation boosted with warm colors to fit the mood. A blur vignette has been added to the edges. The conversation between the man and woman has been color-graded blue for a sadder, colder feel to contrast the warmer more saturated feel of them holding hands and the colder feel of the footage on the beach. A dark vignette and blur were added around the edges to keep in line with the other 'memory' footage. A slight camera shake has been added to the scene with the woman holding the mug to increase intensity. The sunset birds at the end has had a zoom-out pan added to it and the footage of the woman's silhouette zoomed in and kept still and overlayed for dramatic effect.
Thanks alot for your tutorial 🌹, but please could you make how to animate a detailed eye ( blink, close and open ) in grease pencil ?? I would be so grateful 🙏
Thank you, I'm happy if this was helpful to someone. I can't promise a video like that anytime soon, but If I were to animate a blinking eye, I would rely mainly on layer order to do it. I would have multiple layers animated independently and have the eye white at the bottom of the list so it's behind every other layer, the iris and pupil above it, the lids above that, the lashes above that. I would tick the mask option on the iris layer (that is found where the lock icon and layer title is, it is the tiny dot that says mask,) and as the mask layer, I would choose the eye white layer, so it does not poke out of that region when moved (if moved). The top and bottom lashes would be their own separate layers above the eye white and ball. I would also set up lid layers (under the lashes) so these can be moved to cover up the ball and whites as it closes. I would try not to change the shape of the eye white but rather cover it up with the lid layers instead. From that point on, after setting up the layers to manage, I would begin keyframing, much like in this video, by copying and moving individual layers to close the eye (the lids, the lashes). It would probably be easiest to tweak the shape as it closes with sculpt tools and or curve editing (which allows you to select individual points and move them). Curve editing is a box to the right of the three curve select type boxes (dot, line, et cetera) in the Edit menu on the top, and the sculpt menu is in the same drop-down as edit, object, draw menus and will give you tools to push and pull your drawing into place easier as you are changing the shape to close more and more for the keyframing. Though I can't make a video on this anytime soon, hopefully this helped you a bit in setting up a project like that. Something like that with heavy detail and lots of movement I would rely heavily on using many layers to my advantage for. Good luck! I had tried doing an animation like this in the past, and I did find that with the lashes, taking advantage of the 3D workspace, and actually rotating them in a 3D space for the blink along with the shape editing, really helped them to look great, so just an aditional tip too if you wanted to try that as well : )
A few additional tips that are helpful. If you want to parent an object to a single Grease Pencil Layer only instead of the whole thing, you can by clicking on the layer from the layer menu on the right, and going down to the relations tab, choosing parent in that tab, and selecting the object you want the layer to follow. You can easily rename your modifier in the modifier tab by just clicking on the area that says Tint on it and renaming it to the layer you have affecting it. This is a much easier way to see what layers its affecting by glancing instead of having to expand every one and looking at the Influence tab. You can quickly copy and paste the same colors if you have more than one layer to color across Tint modfiers by just going into the color and choosing the HEX menu on the right instead RGB or HSL. Press ctrl c to copy the Hex code and go into the modifier you want to past it too, load the color and select Hex in the new modifier, and press ctr v to paste the color Hex and load the selected color. If you have a lot of layers that are the same color that don't need to be isolated, to make it easier on yourself you can also merge the layers when you're done setting up the keyframe and inbetween animation for them by clicking on the little down arrow drop down in the layers menu on the right and selecting merge down layer from that to merge the top with the layer under it and then add a Tint modifier to the merged layers after. Near the end of the video if you watch the screen I showed where the render menu was on the right so you can set that up and export your finished animation project. After setting up the details in that tab, go to the top menu and select render animation. Happy animating! And like I mentioned in the video. Any additional questions are welcome and I'll get back to you if I have the answer. Also if the easing type in the object animation section isn't applying, you can select the two keyframes (remember to hold down shift to add to your selections) and then apply again and it should work. Okay, later.
I forgot to add, that Luminosity mode CAN be used with color, on a new layer, clipped to your original layer and it WILL work similar to Saturation Mode with your selected color, meaning it will match the underlying layer's brightness level to that of your selected color. High saturations tend to darken. You can just use levels of grey between white and black to adjust the brightness level instead of color too.
intresting 👍
Thanks : )

Could you add some music to the back ground of these speed paints? They are awkwardly silent 😅
This was 2 months ago now lmao. Anyway, I literally JUST found out that you can put music on videos that are already uploaded using TH-cam Studio. I didn't know about this since I never mess with that. Since it doesn't look like I'll have to spend hours to re export and re upload anything, putting music on some of these isn't going be the huge time sink that I thought it was going to be, and I've been making my way through trying to add some to the older videos. This one should have some music now too when it's done processing.

Lol. I'm always surprised when you comment on these. I know you use Clip a lot though, so here's something I had in my art folder from finding it for another artist a while ago on how to do it in Clip tips.clip-studio.com/en-us/articles/2901#e23643af : ) Also, little art secret. This is exactly what I did to do Yumei's tights, and I still have her pattern saved in my PS : 3
How do you enable that "curves" drop down menu on your tool bar when you have the Pencil selected? I've seen videos where some people have it and some don't. For me, it only shows ADVANCED / STROKE / CURSOR. I'm new to Blender so I don't have a clue how to enable it... Thanks for sharing.
After looking around, I believe this was moved to Edit mode in version 3.0, and was only on the Draw mode menu bar in older versions. This video was originally recorded with version 2.97 or something. What version are you using? My 3.0 layout sounds the same as yours, and no longer has the curve menu with the Draw mode either. In 3.0, just make sure you're in Edit Mode, and on the selection box tool, and the curve editing and stuff will be at the top there now. It's a tick box at the top, and also has boxes to tick on for type of selections be it points, or strokes, et cetera. Hopefully this helps. o/ and if you DID want to enable anything in the future, you can browse the Add-ons available in the program from the top Edit menu, preferences, add-ons and search for ones. They all have little descriptions on what they do and are for by clicking the little arrows on them.
So nice !!
Thanks so much, goddy! Happy you like it! ^_^
