The pelvic muscles play a crucial role in supporting the uterus and maintaining its position within the pelvis. These muscles, particularly the pelvic floor muscles, act like a hammock to support the pelvic organs, which include the bladder, uterus, and rectum. A strong and healthy pelvic floor helps keep the uterus in its proper place, preventing conditions like uterine prolapse, where the uterus drops into or out of the vaginal canal.
During pregnancy, childbirth, or as a result of aging or hormonal changes, the pelvic muscles can weaken. This weakening can compromise their ability to support the uterus, leading to issues such as pelvic organ prolapse. Strengthening pelvic muscles through exercises like Kegels can help prevent or manage such conditions.
