But two Swedish Viggens on a training flight had seen the Blackbird and pulled into close formation with it. The MiG turned away; not worth alienating their neighbors. Soon they were joined by two more Viggens and delivered it to the other side of their airspace. The SR-71 made it safely to Germany and landed. Veltri was able to be part of the award presentation to the Swedish pilots years later and thank them personally.
