    • @annieaggens596
      @annieaggens596 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! Thanks for your message. Hiking, walking or running with a well-fitted pack can be great training. Make sure that the weight in the pack is compact so that it doesn't shift while you move round. On your expedition you'll likely have many long hard days. To help prepare for this include some long hard training days with sustained effort for 6+ hours and a distance that's longer than your shorter training sessions. A weighted pack is a great addition to these hikes and/or runs. Invite your friends or family to join you! Pulling a tire is another great way to train.

      Great question! We typically pull sleds behind us in the snow. Winter camping means more gear and gear that is more bulky, but pulling a sled is the best way to bring it all along. If you are in a mountainous area a sled with rigid traces (poles connecting your harness to the sled) are helpful. When in flatter terrain I prefer to pull the sled with rope traces.

    • @annieaggens596
      @annieaggens596 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ariel... Yes, the amount of the flame is controllable, to a point. You can simmer, which is a selling point of the stove, but it's not always the best simmer. Another option, which I do more, is to roll the wind screen a little tighter so I can rest my pan on top of the windscreen which makes it a few inches above the burner. This is how I make pancakes and fry up quesadillas, etc. (sorry, the wind screen is not shown in this video).

    This is the first time I've heard of someone keeping a pee bottle inside your bag, but if it's freezing outside the bag it makes sense. You would have to be super-confident of your ability to avoid leaks if you are going to fill it up while still inside your bag.

    • @annieaggens596
      @annieaggens596 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's absolutely right Stephen. Most guys are able to do this no problem, but doing it while laying on your side (most common) means that you have to plan well regarding the volume of the bottle and the "slosh" factor. Some practice helps the confidence. Women can use the bottles in sleeping bags too, but it's easiest to do it from a kneeling upright position. Again, practice makes perfect!

      If you get really adventurous keep a whole porta potty inside the bivy. After you added the candy bar at the end to sleep well. Made me think the next thing is going to be a teddy bear for those that have trouble sleeping.😂 Nice concise video would have also like to know how you pack all that in or would you just put it in the trunk of your car and drive it to your campsite. Extreme extended cold weather gear can be heavy and takes up a lot of space in a pack. that information would’ve been helpful. Enjoyed it thanks

    • @giggles8458
      @giggles8458 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      asbestos" is all a BS paranoia. The effects of long-term exposure to asbestos (NOT BY TAKING A SHORT WALK THROUGH A BUILDING) typically don't show up until 10-40 years after initial exposure. (BY THEN IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO TELL WHERE YOUR AILMENT REALLY CAME FROM, WOULDN'T IT? OH YES! 40 YEARS AGO I WENT THROUGH A BUILDING IN SOUTH GEORGIA ISLAND, AND NOW I GOT CANCER) Asbestos was used extensively in home construction from the early 1940s through the 1970s as highly-effective and inexpensive fire-retardant material and thermal and acoustic insulator. There is such a foolish thing as Asbestos removal" as we speak, so how bad could it be? The use of Asbestos dates back at least 4,500 years. Evidence found near the Lake Juojärvi, Finland, shows that people used it to make pots and other cooking utensils. In Theophrastus, On Stones, from around 300 BC, there is a reference to a material that is thought to be asbestos.

    • @PolarExplorers
      @PolarExplorers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tents are made of nylon and they are quite thin and breathable. There is some warmth from UV radiation, especially in places like Antarctica and to a lesser extent on Greenland, but typically the inside of the tent is only a few degrees warmer than outside the tent. The exception would be a sunny windless day is a place where the sun is high in the sky and there is a lot of solar radiation. Otherwise to stay warm inside the tent you either need to be in your sleeping bag or in your parka!

    Great video. MSR doesn't mention it in the documentation, but the best way to stop the stove is to flip the bottle over (the fuel line has a swivel). The fuel pickup tube is suspended above the fuel level and forces air into the line, clearing it (and the pump) of liquid fuel. It also depressurizes the bottle if you leave it like that for a minute or two, minimizing fuel spills when removing the pump. :)

    • @annieaggens596

      Don't think the fuel line will swivel with the aluminum block locked to the pump. Probably why it is not in the documentation. No one seems to talk about this? EDIT : Ok, just tried it again with the stove & fuel line not connected to the pump. Mine was stuck and did not swivel in the al block. Used a bit more force and it broke free and then was able to swivel the al block around the fuel line so yes now should be able to flip the fuel bottle over with the brass end of the fuel line rotating 180 degrees in the pump fuel line o-ring.

    Hi Annie , W & T S's was at my house when I was a 12 y.o. kid (72') , I picked it up and took it home out of the old attic and read it about 2005, the pages were falling out . I read it at night in the middle of the summer and it made me feel cold . Those were Explorers ! They weren't prepared because they didn't much of an idea what was ahead of them . The one takeaway was "Adapt to your surroundings or you WILL perish and become a human popsickle . Stay warm !

    Use alcohol to primer, it clean and looks less scary. Alcohol is good emergency fuel because burner can be simple and light, even aluminum foil. When flames hit to generator tube, it heating faster. Turn it to wind for that.

      Thanks Jari, I know some people use alcohol to prime their Whisperlite stoves. For me bringing alcohol is just one more thing to carry. I don't mind the flame during the process of priming. I've actually come to enjoy it - like my own little campfire before the meal :) However, using alcohol for priming the stove (and only priming, not fueling it) is a good option to know about. Thanks!

      What kind of alcohol? Denatured? Or can isopropyl work?
