Skydiving - Double parachute Malfunction
1 Aug 20. My first high speed malfunction after 366 jumps and my reserved fired through my main risers. Had a bit of a hard landing and only sustained non life threatening injuries.
After a fun tracking jump with my coach, I broke away at 5,000 feet and commenced my deployment. My pilot chute did not deploy my main within the normal delay. I did not look back immediately to see what was happening to my pilot chute. I panicked. I commenced my EP as trained in my home country. This meant that I placed a hand on each handle. I pulled my cutaway first with my right hand, and then pulled my reserve handle very quickly, with my left hand. There was approximately half a second delay between the two pulls. My container was a Talon FS with a single RSL attached. Reflecting back to my packing, I think I folded my pilot chute differently due to a lack of concentration and haste. This may have resulted in the pilot chute delaying in its inflation and subsequent deployment. The lesson for me here is don't panic, delay the reserve pull after the cutaway. Maybe this might have been the cause of the reserve firing through the main riser or maybe not.
I was not prepared for the subsequent malfunction with the two entangled canopies. I wish I had that telescopic hook knife! Rightly or wrongly, my focus was (a) to keep both canopies stable and inflated and (b) land somewhere safe. I thought about deploying my reserve brakes but I chose not to because I feared it may have caused further instability and collapsed or wrapped the canopies. I did not have any control in direction and was at the mercy of the wind. I was lucky to clear a cemetery full of hard marble tombs and a set of power lines (about 2 meters). I pull hard on my right riser with the intent to miss the house and land in the trees. Unfortunately, it was not enough and I set up for a PLR in the farm house's driveway. As I descended at what seemed at a 1:1 ratio, I was heading straight towards the back of a car and had to abort my PLR. I put one foot out to deflect off the car, then ricocheted off the car and body slammed on the ground on my back. I did not loose consciousness but I was winded for about 3 minutes. In the end my only injury was an ankle injury.

That landing is like a T-10C jump with 150 pounds of gear every time, except for house and car.

Good to see that he didn't finally end up in the graveyard (figuratively and literally speaking). Those gravestones in the cemetery to the right of the approach looked VERY HARD INDEED!

everyone should try cutting away on the ground.there needs to be some slack in the cable so it doesnt release accidentally and the rig might shift around your shoulders so the cable only just comes out at full arm stretch.a spinning malfunction requires more pull on the cutaway...when you get a reserve pack job ,a nice rigger will encourage people to put the rig on and pull both handles..see if you can hit the wall behind you with the springloaded pilot chute from 3 or 4 metres away, far enough to get out of the burble.i replaced a weak spring on an old rig

@@mauriziodilorenzo1269I don't blame ya. I thought you were gonna make em. They would have been pretty comfy vs the grass I bet. Totally impressed regardless. When I saw your reserve riser start flyin' back up to the canopy I got a lump in my throat. Thought for sure you were going to end up like Dead Mike.

So glad you made it thru that, If I'd been underneath that looking up I honestly wouldn't have known what else to do, when the slider on the reserve pulled all the way up and the nose closed up I honestly thought I was watching a fatality in progress. Still can't quite work out how the main got hung up, maybe the rsl was involved? If it's any consolation, I had a pilot chute in tow on an old free fall round with a chest mounted reserve and, beyond looking round and dipping a shoulder to try and clear it, I absolutely did not hesitate getting the reserve out. I was a student with 50 jumps at the time, and the student drill on rounds is completely different - no cutaway! Having come to a dead stop from terminal on deployment of the tiny lifesaving but leg breaking I24, I watched as my main bag broke free and tumbled away underneath me and then very lazily began to inflate despite my efforts to try and pull it in. I assumed I'd be OK, round on round. What could go wrong? The main started spinning counterclockwise wise and wrapping itself around the reserve like it was on a mission, it had a mind of its own, it made one full turn around and started collapsing the reserve before I managed to separate them, after which the main continued spinning for the next two minutes. I landed in a heap with a massive knot of main risers above me and a shakey wobbling reserve bouncing off the main in front of me. No injuries other than some lurid bruises! So, nothing compared to what you went thru, I saw the rate of decent toward the end and thought this is probably going to end badly, and next to a cemetery, appeals to my grave humour😂 But seriously, main/reserve entanglement square on square is not good, so glad you made it. Blue skies😊

It is time to get right with Jesus. You aren’t going to automatically enter into heaven if you have lied or stolen or had premarital sex. Even one of those makes you worthy of hell fire. Don’t deceive yourself! The punishment of sin is hell fire. Jesus died so you can get a clean slate and forgiveness of a future sin when we confess it. When you start to follow him you have to strive to obey what he commands. No one will enter heaven without the blood of Jesus over you. No other way but through Jesus
