I bought a 1983 RM125 in 1985 - first real dirt bike. In 1991 I bought a '89 KX250. Sure it was a 250, but more than that I realized how much better the low-end was on the KXs and CRs. The low-end on those RMs during that 81-86-ish period was actually pretty terrible. I kept up with other riders on the track for the most part, but only because I figured out how to keep the rpms up through turns, but it was a pain in the ass and I frequently missed and came out bogging. Miss those days and the SMELLS!
The 82 and 84 RM250’s are still raved about in modern articles as being the best 250’s ever made. The 81-82 RM125’s were great bikes and lead the class. But of course a 125 is going to be different then a 250 unless it’s a rotary valve Can-Am
similar going from an rm80 to a kx 125. The KX for me was so much better. Wheelies and landings were amazing in comparison. Both bikes awesome just preferred the KX.

This bike was extremely reliable for me. I ran it again in 1985 finishing 3rd in the championship. In two seasons it raced 18 races with 36 moto’s and ZERO DNF’s. My 1984 RM125 now sits in my living room fully restored and looks like the day I started racing it.🇺🇸👍🏼

Not a healthy bike. Get it tuned. Check the fuel mixture, check the carb, check the jetting, check for air leaks. It sounds horrible.
