We must remember she was casted as a standby replacement for Elphaba not an Ensemble member. In those days The Elphaba standby went on as an off stage replacement for Elphaba and a 1st off stage replacement for Nessarose as well. If she went on for Elphaba an on stage understudy went on for Nessa(which usually was the case). She was only a standby for 4 months in 2004 then was the 1st person to replace Idina as the principal Elphaba from January 2005 to January 2006 with a brief stint as the principal Elphaba on tour in late 2006. She rarely played anyone other than Elphaba in that time.

I first learned about Cynthia through Shoshana. As a theatrical cinematic performance, I do think Cynthia is worthy of the award for Best Actress coming her way. Having seen Eden Espinosa live and following Shoshana for years, I wish Cynthia would have just cut loose on Wizard and I and Defying Gravity. I do think that Cynthia’s I Am Not That Girl is the best version I have heard of that song. I am interested to see what she does in No Good Deed with the infamous Fiyero triplet from a phrasing, dynamics, vibrato, riff, and belt perspective.

Donna is the only Elphaba to punch me in the gut with “I’m flying high”. There’s something about the texture and the tonal quality of her voice on that line that is just……. Superb.
