I love reading aloud to kids! Hi, I’m Papa Mike, and I'm on a mission to make spoken-audio versions of the classics of children's literature accessible for free in audiobook form. What can be more soothing than sitting back and relaxing as someone reads a story out loud to us? I have years of reading children's stories and books to my sons and now my six grandkids. Eight Cousins, or The Aunt-Hill was published in 1875 by American novelist Louisa May Alcott. It was originally published as a serial in St. Nicholas and is part of the Little Women Series. It is the story of Rose Campbell, who has been recently orphaned and resides with her maiden great aunts, the matriarchs of her wealthy family near Boston, until her guardian, Uncle Alec, returns from abroad to take over her care. Through his unorthodox theories about child-rearing, she becomes happier and healthier while finding her place in her family of seven boy cousins and numerous aunts and uncles. She also makes friends with Phebe, her aunts' young housemaid. Eight Cousins received both favorable and unfavorable reviews in the early days of its publication. Reviews focused on Alcott's stylistic tone as well as the portrayal of characters and realism. In Eight Cousins, Alcott discusses transcendental education, child-rearing, and social differences.

It's a competent, clear rendition, but the reader is not putting himself into the character. It has all the emotion of a man opening up his Amazon delivery of dress shirts. However, the more important point is that I've proved beyond a reasonable doubt, after over a decade of independent research, that "The Raven" was not really written by Edgar Allan Poe. In fact, if my research results are accurate, he had nothing whatsoever to do with the writing or first publication of that poem. It was, as I believe, written by Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier, based on real-life circumstances. It was Mathew, not Poe, who published it in the February, 1845 edition of "American Review," signing "(blank) Quarles." Poe merely scooped it by three days, replacing Mathew's pseudonym with his own name, and brazenly pretending to have written it. HIs supposed explanation of how he wrote it, in his essay, "The Philosophy of Composition," was a childish scam.
