Hello! I just wanted to share my positive experience with the Intel compute stick (I have the 1st gen, 2GB, STCK1A32WFC, that I got of Ebay for $65). TL;DR: If you can find one on the cheap (<$100) and don't mind spending a day or two optimising it, the compute stick can still be viable in 2024 (IMHO). I recommend using Debian 11 (x86version of Debian 11 buster from the Raspberry Pi website), setting swapiness to about 30 and using lightweight apps (Gnumeric, Abiword, Falkon etc) for best experience. My experience: it was pretty awful out of the box with Windows (which is a memory hog an a half). Linux OTOH is pretty good...though the big distros (Zorin, Ubuntu etc) are almost as bad a windows with resource allocation. I tried a few lighter builds (AntiX, Puppy etc) but they weren't compatible. I finally found a lightweight, 64bit OS in Debian 11 (get it from the Rasberry Pi website; it's the x86 version - Bullseye- of the OS used on Raspberry Pis. www.raspberrypi.com/software/raspberry-pi-desktop/). It makes the little compute stick work really well. Including a screenshot of system monitor here - imgur.com/72esgh9.png (the RPi folks claim this is 32bit OS, but as you can see from neofetch, it's clearly x86_64). As you can see, at idle I have 82 tasks running, using 488Mb/2GB memory. I've been able to get it lower than this, but I like running a few QoL things (like Plank etc) in the background. By contrast, Windows was about 1.1GB at idle, which makes it useless on a 2GB system. My experience (have the stick for about a year): It's entirely replaced my laptop as daily driver for most basic tasks. Eg: browsing (6-8ish tabs on Firefox ESR without slowdown; more with Falkon), word processing (Abiword, OpenOffice), social media, video streaming etc all work just fine. And yes, I can run multiple apps as once (though as always, browsers are the biggest memory hogs; Midori or Falkon are probably best for this, though Firefox ESR isn't too shabby) Performance wise, I can run most TH-cam vids just fine at 720p using h264ify in Firefox ESR (1080 using Invidious instance in Falkon for some reason), 1080p Jellyfin media streaming etc being no issue at all. The only time the fan seems to turn on is when watching TH-cam, so it's pretty much silent in typical use. I've not done any gaming on mine [though there are various YT playlists showing older games running at 30fps], but for typical home office use case (banking, word processing, ChatGPT, TH-cam, Media streaming, multi-tab browsing etc) it seems just fine. Windows + 2GB is the issue here; suggest people either use Tiny8.1 or Linux and the Computer Stick becomes viable daily driver. YMMV. Hope this is of help to someone out there; I'm really happy with mine.

I had a compute stick with 32GB storage which wasn't enough space for a Windows update (even after I moved all Document and Pictures folders onto a micro SD card). I was happier with my other compute stick w 8GB RAM and 128GB storage

I got it to go on but can’t get it to go away, I followed the instructions and put the 0 in place of the 1 but it’s still there in game😭

You have any issue where the game was stuck at the loading screen ? Tried reinstalling and resetting my deck to factory and carx gets stuck on the loading screen

I had one of these and it sucked sooo badly. There was no sound. It was slow, couldn't run anything besides a browser. A chromebook or mini pc is jist such a better option

These things were ahead of their time and I had the pleasure to use one when trying to show a presentation but the PC at the location had issues opening it. Being able to carry a system you know works to directly interface to a projector in this form factor is a very underrated ability, you just maybe need to be the type of person to travel around and show presentations with minimal prior troubleshooting. Apparently Minisforum is attempting to revive the concept with a Stick PC that uses USB C for media and power solving one of the most glaring issues with most in current circulation, which lack an internal battery. It's definitely something I'll be looking for, even if it costs a little more than a Mini PC of similar performance. Of course a runner-up for filling this type of purpose would be a smartphone, but I haven't yet seen anything that lets them interface to HDMI, usually it's the projector that is adapted so it can talk to a smartphone, which excludes any and all venues sporting anything older, as well dumb TVs (which is the state they all should be).

I hope mini pc stick return in future with Arm processor. With thunderbolt port 😮
