Imam Phillip's take is a reasonable judgement. But it's also very subjective. How authentic are those hadith he mentioned? I was told there is some doubt about them. And they there is the matter of hadith that he does not mention where the rasool pbuh allowed certain music to be played in honor of him. Why can't we consider that as valid as well? And there is no specific condemnation of music in the Quran as well. So what I've found is that most scholars object to the lifestyles that go along with music. Music tends to accompany gatherings or moments where humans want to break free from restrictions. This often leads to debauchery, because humans tend to do things excessively. But if you're praying your Salat, reading the Quran, avoiding excessive debauchery, and generally living a wholesome life, what is music gonna do to hurt you?

hmmm I feel there are so much double standard in the muslim society... Many ban music... but when you visit their home, the Television is on all the time, even when there are guests. TV full of music full of drama full of hate and corruption. At the golden age of Islam. Muslims were pioneers of music. In that time Muslims made the biggest contributions to mankind in terms of science. Muslims even invented the guitar for heavens sake. Then the wobblers came and it slowly became Haraam. Now I understand why ignorance is sin. There is an authendic hadith, where Aisha as was listening to music and Abu Bakr (as) who thought he knew Islam better than the Prophet pbuh reprimanded Aisha (as) while in the presence of the Prophet (pbuh) who was resting. As soon as the prophet heard this he condemned Abu Bakr and took Aisha’s as side. Bukhari no 907 Maybe we have come to this position on music because we have too many muslims that are in the same state as Abu Bakr (as) was at that moment these days. In the days of the Prophet pbuh Abysinian slaves used to dance with music in the mosques in front of the Prophet pbuh. Dont listen to these Imam robots. They only preach and don’t question their own ideologies. Music is part of human nature. To go against makes you inhuman and close minded. Furthermore a holy book sent by Allah to a prophet was named the Book of Songs. Why would Allah (swt) name his holy book that is related to songs if it was haraam? The other Abrahamic faiths never had any issues with music. And dont try to use that purposely manipulated and purposely mistranslated quranic verse either. Idle talk does not equate to music but equates to Idlesness! Don’t try to twist it to get what you want. Ever wonder why Sufism allows Music in mosques. Ever wonder why the sufis were the biggest defenders of Islam during the Mongol era. Ever wonder why the honored person mentioned in the Quran that would conquer Constantinople was a Sufi? Maybe they were closer to Islam than those other weak Muslims sects were at that time. Maybe we drifted away from the truth and mistook our condemnation for things we dont understand as a sign of faith. For example, the Burka has nothing to do with Islam, yet muslim women wear it as a badge of honour for their faith. I guess we are all looking for badges for Allah swt even if we have ro make them up. In a nutshell, I call it blindly self deprivation to falsely prove your faith in contradiction to the teachings of Islam. I swear if marriage wasn’t mentioned in the Quran you hardcore muslims would of turned out just like the christian monks! Hitting themselves, locking themselves up for days, not eating or speaking for years and abstaining from marriage in the name of devotion to God.
