Narcolepsy Service Dog in Training ~1 year old Doberman -Sappho- Alerting to a Sleep Attack
The videos from this trip turned out blurry and didn't catch sound that well because we failed to check the camera first 😅
But I wanted to share it anyway because it caught Sappho alerting to my sleep attack.
Normally, with my meds and managing nap times, this does not interfere with my work as many others who have taken lessons and sent their dogs to board and train with me can attest. Plus, I always have our other trainers or my own service dog Dexter to let me know/help out if needed.
Sappho's owner wanted me to change her alert behavior to a nose nudge, and since we already knew she could alert reliably, I was a bit more careless and lost track of time when we were working her in Bass Pro Shop (that'll be another Point of View video currently being edited and will be posted later). I am very proud of Sappho for letting me know that it's time for me to rest a bit.
Next task I'm working on with her is a "Lean on Me" command for her to be still and put her head over her owner's shoulder so her owner could rest for a bit before regaining enough energy to continue or get to a safe space for a nap.
Hope y'all enjoy this video 😊

[Point of View] Service Dog in Training ~1 year old Doberman -Sappho- Best Buy Trip With the Hoomans
มุมมอง 1362 ปีที่แล้ว
Sorry for the wait. Editing a video is way more complicated than I knew 😅 Thankfully Earl has looked into it before. Sappho is a ~1 year old Doberman. She's in training to be a service dog for her owner, who also has Narcolepsy like me. There's actually a lot a service dog can do for someone with Narcolepsy. Sappho, like my dog Dexter, has learned to alert both of us when we start getting tired...

Hummm? San Antonio Airport???
Tell them they should try a bit harder to hide their ignorance. Maybe they can get a service dog that gives them a nudge or a nip before they say something stupid or rude?!
I’m coming off yet another fall from falling while walking in my home. Finally going to neurologist to get a confirmation. My GP is convinced I have narcolepsy. I measure my sleep in seconds. I’ve been doing this for years and gave up my license after the 2nd crash. I was just wondering if they have service dogs trained for this.
sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cut
I’m thinking about getting a Doberman as a service dog can u give me some advice and tips please
I also have narcolepsy with cataplexy and I’m curious about what tasks you train them to do? Like I sleep through my alarms and will turn them off in my sleep no matter what which has really affected my school life. Could they alert you and make sure you get up? Can they sense a sleep attack? Like especially while driving, I don’t drive because I am worried about having a sleep attack
Good questions! Yes, waking me when alarm sounds was one of the first tasks my own service dog mastered. My dog, as well as Sappho here, have both accurately alerted to my sleep attacks. My dog Dexter does alert me while driving by nosing or putting his head on my shoulder to let me know it's time to drink some water, eat an icebreaker mint, and find a safe place to pull over and take a break. Other tasks I've taught: waking from nightmares (usually followed by deep pressure therapy to help with going back to sleep). Forward momentum pull, counterbalance, and item retrieval by name as well as by directions to aid with cataplexy or fatigue. Find my phone, find my car in a parking lot, find the friend/family member we're with, as well as "follow" the person I indicate when brain fog strikes. Bring my phone to a friend/family member in the house with us if I need help/have a bad cataplexy episode. Behavior interruption because years of undiagnosed N gave me a lot of bad habits of trying to stay awake, ranging from fidgeting to digging my nails into myself to scratching myself (this might be more automatic behavior). I may be forgetting a couple more. All of these I taught Dexter well before I was diagnosed and medicated with N1, plus, he's turning 8 next month and a senior now, so I don't use some of these tasks as much anymore. You should still be able to see some of them in the other videos on our channel though.
Jesus Christ. Looking at service dogs for my own narcolepsy. Definitely a disability 😅
Texas heat is brutal! I live in north Texas and it’s HOT I have 16 dogs so we have to accommodate all of them with water and shade inside the house it’s been a lot recently!
It's terrible that my first thought was "That's a really unfortunate name for a dog"...the internet has ruined me 😭
this person dnt have a disability just want the attention wit the dog 🙄
Sooo cute!
So y’all do reactivity training too? or is it just for small/rescue dogs?
We sure do 😊 Not just small/rescue dogs.
@@DogsGotSouls Is there a criteria that they have to fit in? (severity of reactivity ) such has lunging, barking, growling, whining etc
What a good girl! ❤️
That’s awesome! She is doing awesome. ❤️
Such a good girl! My favorite breed is a Doberman! Where is her vest from I love it and I think it would look great in my service dog.
Thank you! That harness is actually a GoPro harness for us to take our Point of View videos with and I just added velcro patches on it 😅
@@DogsGotSouls oh! Cool! Thank you!
Wat the dog is shopping for?
Praises, love, fun times (because training and working needs to be something they love to do for them to be reliable any time you need them), and her food 😂
I love Dobermans. The doggy did amazing. I also have a service dog!
Thank you so much! She sure is fun to work with 😊
She did amazing!!!!! Keep up the great work!!!!
Thank you so much ❤️❤❤ she's turning out real nicely thanks to her owner and family keeping up with homework at home 😊 I have been even more amazed lately because her owner asked me to change her alert behavior to nose nudge and I noticed just exactly how accurate she is and she even once let Earl who was handling her know that I was getting a sleep attack by nudging him and looking at me. I'm very proud of her and her human family 😁
@@DogsGotSouls that’s so great!!!!!
Thank you 😊
SO CUTE my dobie is a sdit!
Amazing!!! I plan on get a dobie for my sd prospect In a few years!
Dobies sure are fun to work with! I'm having a lot of fun with this girl who's now back for another board and train. I highly advise that you check out the breeder thoroughly to know they're reputable and ethical. Their pups should come from families who have been OFA tested and temperament tested, preferably titled in obedience or some kind of achievements; parents should've been carefully selected genetically for pairing; and the puppies should also be temperament tested for you to find the most suitable pup for the tasks you need 😊
@@DogsGotSouls yes!! It’s definitely hard work to find a reputable breeder!!!
Awww
K. Linda
Dia is so sweet!
She’s so precious!! You’re doing a fantastic job with her!! 💜
Thank you so much!
So it’s your pet
No they're my service dogs
@@DogsGotSouls ya sure
@@keithhutchins8803 why? Because I don't look like I have a disability? 😂
@@keithhutchins8803 I have a rare medical condition that people can't see unless they witness one of my episodes. I have a handicap placard, a power chair, and a medical ID for a reason. Please educate yourself on invisible disabilities before you accuse the next person with a service dog to be a fake 😊
@@DogsGotSouls because the tasks your dog is trained for.
I can’t be the only on who thought that was a real lizard 🫣 Anyways… very well done!
When we were approaching, I had to take a second look too 😆 thank you!
Love it
*zombie noises*
They dont want to do this stop with this only for likes!!!!!
lol this is one of their favorite tricks to do. good luck trying to get a dog to do this when they don't want to.
@@DogsGotSoulsexactly! Dogs won’t work if they don’t want to. Plus I’m sure they get rewarded.
