The State of Emulation: A Guide to What You Can Emulate
I've covered a few of the popular frontends with which you can use to launch your emulators, but what about the emulators themselves? Just how deep does the rabbit hole go, and just exactly what is possible through emulation?
Today, I'm taking you on a journey from the 8- and 16-bit eras, right on through to the PS3 and the Nintendo Switch, just so I can show what's possible on modern hardware.

Retro Gaming Frontends (PC)

Today, I'm delving into the rabbit hole that is retro gaming frontends. And there are tons of 'em. I pick three specific frontends that I have the most experience with, and demonstrate the pros and cons of each. Do you have a library of retro games just lying around on an old harddrive? Retro frontends might be the solution for your organizational needs. You can have your own personal Netflix o...

Is Super Mario Bros. (1993) Better Than The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)?

In this episode, I'm comparing the two theatrical Super Mario movies and examining which one is definitively the better movie. I'm approaching this from the viewpoint of what each movie represents, factoring in the eras that both were released and taking out the idea that one might represent its source material better than the other.

Is Emulation Piracy? The Debate Continues...

So I bought a PS2 recently and was playing on a PVM. I liked it alot! Crisp image. I got THPS4 and thought, let me check it on PCSX2. Man, I shouldn’t have done that. I tuned the graphics and those PS2 Games are looking soooo good.
Hmm interesting 18:48 you say not much games are playable.. wile the comparability is 80% (822 games as of today) my experience with xemu is also great! Have even been playing network games up to 8 players (halo and timesplitters 2) Your video is well put together!! I like it. If you like try our retrobat build instead of kinhank maybe its not up to date? Anyway gonna share your video around, emulation to save those retro games✌️
Ooh forgot to mention, Devil may cry is awesome!! I like 1&2 for ps2 definitely try them, sound tracks on dmc2 are very good.
I find using real controllers from original consoles helps. Ps4 controller for ps games and real wii remote for wii games.
Very interesting and good topic. Nice video. Its peculiar which systems and games run emulated and why. Like saturn having multiple strange cpus running congruent. Great script, thumbs up.
I love to imagine traveling back to the 90s with a $100 handheld that runs everything, or my S24 Ultra, with acess to basically the entirety of human knowledge
Is that a berserk t-shirt in the thumbnail? Very cool
It is, yes!
Whoa - playing some Intellivision, kicking it OLD SCHOOL
I started young as a pirate well my mum did when she got me a chipped ps1 as she said in her words if i can get it cheaper thats what am gonna do food and clothes dont come for free back then it was a 100% piracy but now i feel like if they will not sell me the game to own am gonna take it for free its just that simple they are not deleting my games on a whim f that
Personally, the only frontends I use are for emulators that otherwise only run from the command line. Not so much because I'm afraid of the command line, but because they usually have so many options that just getting a game up and running with an actual controller is an exercise in frustration. Personally, I've never liked all-in-one emulators that emulate several different systems at once, as they usually don't have the same level of features as dedicated programs. For example, Mednafen emulates the PS1, and while it may have more accurate emulation than others, it has almost no options for upscaling and smoothing the image. On the other hand, it does do a better job emulating the Atari Lynx, than any of the old stand-alone emulators. I'd rather have discreet emulators for each system. The exception being when the systems are related, like Fusion emulating all the Sega cartridge systems. Anyway, that feeling has carried over to frontends as well. I don't want to have to configure the frontend to run each emulator, and then also have to configure the emulators. Plus, without adding screenshots and maybe even videos to show you what the games look like, you don't get that slick menu that everyone finds so appealing. The best option is when the emulator itself has a nice frontend. Like PPSSPP, or even Stella.
TIP: barocera. Extreemly versetile. Global settings, per system settings, per game settings, per game emulator choice. Can be used as a HTPC with Kodi (!) integrated. easy network drive. Even remote ssh login for the die hards. different install options; portable, dedicated os, dual boot. really worth a try.
You need a more powerful CPU to emulate the more demanding PS3 games on RPCS3. Uncharted and The Last Of Us should run a lot smoother on a 12th Gen i7 or 12th Gen i9, or even a Zen4 AMD CPU. All of these support AVX-512, which improves PS3 performance ten fold.
And I get that, but what makes a game playable (according to the official RPCS3 compatibility list) is that you don't need higher end hardware to get a game to run. That's why something like God of War III or the Uncharted games are only listed as ingame, for the moment. The hardware requirements right now are too high. And even on my machine, I can run The Last of Us or Uncharted, some areas run just fine... but for the most part, they just aren't optimal experiences.
TIP: eXoDOS 6, 7500 MS-DOS games preserved.
Prob liked that bat scene in particular from the DMC reboot, huh? Nope. Ain't have nuttin' on dat original DMC
Love the bat scene. That's how I wake up every morning.
I can tell you went through a lot of effort making this video. Well done, bro.
Yes, capturing the footage using my laptop as both the emulation machine AND the capture device was challenging, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Thanks!
that final fantasy beatemup at the end, could you please tell me the name?
Its an OpenBOR game, I think it's just called Final Fantasy.
What's this? A quality video? 181 subscribers? This is a crime
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Crazy that Xbox emulation got sooo left behind. Hoping to one day emulate Fatal Frame II Director's Cut 🙏
On the topic of N64 emulation. Rosalie's mupen GUI is pretty decent for everything I've thrown at it
Most of the emulators I've used will run the games fine, but usually I find flaws in things like menus (lines running through the display, characters not highlighting on the selection screens, etc). Killer Instinct Gold I can't get to run perfectly no matter what emulator I use, although the gameplay is fine no matter what I choose, and that's what counts.
I only use snesx on my android but it only lags on ps2.
I am having good experience emulating ps2 on my samsung s22+. The thing is that some games will run on ppss22 and some games will run on Nethersx.
emulation is sooo damn cool
So much emulation. This has me excited for turning my RTX 4070 laptop into an emulation powerhouse Great video
Xbox 360 emulating is rough, although I'm expecting good things in the future.
I just started experimenting with 360 emulation last year, and it's got a ways to go, but what I've seen still looks promising. What can run typically runs well, if it weren't for a lot of graphical bugs.
Honestly I use a GMKTech K2 mini PC. Ryzen 7 7735HS. RADION 650 and I have very few problems. Now I'm not emulating anything above PS3. However Play Fallout, Outer worlds, FF 13, and other RPGS from STEAM
Fantastic video
20:24 is diabolical
You have awakened my interest in emulation gaming. Keep up the good work. Looking forward in learning more about the existing emulators and how to configure them. Liked and subscribed.
That's why using a frontend like Retrobat is a good way for beginners to start, in my opinion. Most of the emulators come pre-configured, so all you have to do is add your roms and play.
A few things: - 3 frames of run ahead is too high for Mario World. The game has 2 frames of lag natively so you shouldn't put more. - Graphics emulation on N64 doesn't have anything to do with the emulation core. It has to do with the graphics plugin. Parallel RDP is the accurate one that's almost perfect. Also, avoid the "Parallel" core. -The Hyperspin hard disks you can buy online are TERRIBLE. The only good thing about them is they come loaded with roms and ISOS.
I haven't looked into emulation for in my case mobile devices sonce 2016. Was so surprised i could run a ps2 emulator with hardly any hiccups on my poop 100$ android from metro
Yeah, it doesn't take much these days. I remember ten years ago trying to emulate PS2 on a laptop and it just wasn't there yet. Mind boggling to think that you can play the entire library on a crap ton of devices with upscaling.
You can also set your input polling to early to help with input latency. By default it's set to late on some systems by default for some reason.
Great tip. I don't use the setting that much as I hardly game on my Raspberry Pi, but I'm still figuring out a lot of those settings.
The series X is magical for emulation. I can run GT3 in 4k with little to no issue.
I used to emulate on my Wii (the older 16-bit games, obviously). but I typically don't like emulating on consoles because of all the workarounds. I've heard emulating on the series X is especially gratifying though. Cheers!
@@TallDarkRetro it is wonderful. my wife brought me a ps2 slim for my birthday a month ago and on my samsung 4k tv it looked terrible but could get through it. Then watched a guy talk about how good it is and i had my doubts, downloaded pes 6 and gt 3 and i am surprised you didn`t hear my screams of excitement lol
I grew up emulating in the early 2000s, glad first worlders are catching up.
It would be easier to say what you can't emulate. Xbox One, Series X and PS5. PS4 emulator has Bloodborne playable now and is progressing fast. As good as everything else is emulated.
great video
I watch your videos and i have itchy balls. Then you cut off. What can i do?
Slather on a nice, thick coating of Tiger Balm, or Icy Hot. That should take care of the itching.
@@lurkerrekrul ahh the Tuesday night special. Do I deep fry them before or after the tigerbalm ?
Wait... you cut your balls off? That's a pretty extreme solution, but hey... you do you.
@@TallDarkRetro please read the comment. YOU can them off. Not me
Something I always recommend to people who are getting into emulating retro games is to get yourself the original controllers for whatever system you are emulating. A consoles identity is heavily tied into how its controllers feel. An obvious and perhaps a more extreme example would be the n64 controller with super mario 64. The games in older systems were made with that systems controller in mind. More modern systems like the xbox series, playstation and switch pro controllers are all fairly standarised nowdays, so it matters less imo.
Yeah, I have controllers for most consoles I emulate, at least where it makes sense. I wont get one for gameboy for example, cause the snes is perfect for it, but anything sega or the N64 require its own controllers. Also, ps2, ps3 and og xbox need pressure sensitivity for a few games. Never use one controller for all. Its not a great experience
I thought about getting a few usb controllers for that purpose, but the thing I like about emulation is the convenience of having everything on one machine, and being able to use one controller for everything. I grew up with the NES in the late 80s, and I've had just about every Nintendo, Sega, and Sony console since. I get the authenticity of it, but I have drawers filled with dozens of controllers, and it clutters up space. But I agree, especially with Nintendo's older consoles, those games were designed with specific control schemes in mind.
emulation fiend nuff said subbed lol sold me on fiend lol
2:58 you haven’t messed around with the SharpX68000? It’s pretty cool bro.
This is an excellent video, very helpful and informative. Thanks for making it!
7:45 so I grew up with a Saturn and a Genesis, I was 5 when I first played Panzer Dragoon and it changed what I thought videogames could be. Saturn emulation has come a LONG way, there are some very solid options available now.
I don't typically mess with computers, just because I'm not big on mouse and keyboard. And it's weird, I grew up on computers, but I'm so used to using a controller these days that it just feels weird not to have it, even when you have programs like Joy2Key.
@@TallDarkRetro I’m not a fan of gaming with a keyboard either, I totally understand, controllers are really well designed peripherals for most games that have been made throughout history. This video is really helpful, I appreciate the effort!
I hope your channel grow really fast, this video is amazing and having less than 100 views is a crime.
Very sweet of you to say. Thanks so much for the kind words!
25:38 you’ve peaked my interest
Yes, mine as well! ;-)

Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad people are digging this video in particular.
Definitely gets points for the violence and gore and the first ten minutes are pretty cool. And one of jasons best deaths. Besides that tho. Ugh. Lol probably still above jason x for me
This movie sucks the only think I like about this movie is the look of jason the kills and the score otherwise this movie is trash... great review 😊
hanks, that means a lot! Yeah, not a particularly good one, but I love to hear people talk about it!
Ranking Mario movies from worst to best (so far) 1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (oh boy, here comes the hate from the critics and other “Disney shills” that would defend the flaws of their recent movies like the live-action remakes, but I don’t care, while I respect that this movie isn’t everyone’s cup of tea even with approximately 1.4 billion dollars at the box office it made, I had a lot of fun with it because of its animation, orchestral pieces and… weird choices for licensed music, Princess Peach having more personality than just being a strong female character as she does it with a very good heart, and this movie just simply being a fun action film in a fantastical realm, and I am so hyped for the sequel and can’t wait for it to fix what the original did wrong and keep what made it so charming before we can get another sequel to be the highest-grossing film since Avatar, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” with all the grandeur and cataclysmically beautiful animation the Wii game has) 2 & 3. The other Mario movies (I guess you could say they are beautiful messes because while very flawed, they do have a nostalgic late 80s - early 90s charm and doesn’t completely have their hearts in the wrong place, except for Princess Peach choosing a generic stereotype of princes that is Prince Haru over Mario, despite doing as much work, maybe even more while she proved herself to be capable of defending herself like most other Mario characters.)
i think trying to make a good movie about Mario is kind of futile since Nintendo doesn't really have consistent lore for the Mario series they just made things up .and a lot of the character design was because of hardware limitations like mushrooms and turtles were just easier to draw than many other things on 8 bit hardware. even Zelda or Metroid would make for much better movies
Yes, which is why Nintendo can get away with what they did with the current Mario film. But with Zelda and definitely Metroid, they actually have to try.
i think that while the new one was better it seemed like they tried to shove too much stuff from the games in there so its the opposite extreme of the 1993 movie that had almost nothing in common and it was made by boomers seeing a handful of screenshots of the games and then just making things up. you now how most people born before 1970 are when it comes to video games and back then that was most of the adult population . it seems like the new one tried to over compensate for the flaws of the 1993 movie.
i remember when this was a flash game years and years ago when i was i college.
just from first impression it reminds me of rain world (i haven’t watched the whole video yet)
Haven't played that one.
Oh wow, I wanted to mention (almost) the same thing! Rain World is my favorite game, and when I first saw it some 4 years ago, it reminded me of Limbo. I'm glad it's not just me, even if it's the other way around
limbo?? geometry dash reference??
