The Beatles: Long Tall Sally (Drum Cover)
The first Beatles song of the new year is their rocking rendition of Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally”, which was released as the title for their fifth UK EP on June 19, 1964. As long admirers of Richard, the group had performed the song since their Quarrymen days in 1957 and up until their final public concert performance in 1966 at Candlestick park.
The Beatles recorded “Long Tall Sally” on March 1, 1964 during the recording sessions for A Hard Day’s Night, though it was not included on the album. As with most Little Richard covers, Paul took lead vocal duties. The song features the traditional Beatle lineup with George Martin accompanying on piano. Because of the group’s familiarity with the song, the song was completed in one take. The song features a guitar solo played by both John and George. John takes the first solo and George takes the second solo.
Ringo went all out on this recording. Snare and tom fills, a rocking crash/ride shuffle, a driving four on the floor bass drum, and an impressive outro, what more could you ask for? While the entire song features some fierce drumming, it’s the outro that leaves people amazed. Ringo alternates between the crash and ride cymbals, and snare and floor tom, and it is floor tom because if you watch any live performance of the song you’ll see Ringo play the floor tom during the outro. Why Ringo doesn’t play this outro in the Anthology or the Live At The BBC versions I don’t know, though he does play it in the version on On Air- Live at The BBC Volume 2. Because the drums could often sound “distant” in the mix (though this song isn’t too bad), I’ve emphasized the drums a bit more than the recording so you could all get a sense of how they sound. I used only three mics for this cover: an overhead, kick drum and room mic. Mixing wise, I used a variety of Reaper plugins as well as the Abbey Road plates stereo, the RS56 passive EQ mono, the REDD 17 stereo, and the J37 stereo plugins all developed by Waves. While it may be just a two minute song, there’s a lot packed into it.
Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy!

“Martha My Dear” is the ninth track on the first disc of The Beatles’ self-titled album, aka The White Album from 1968. Credited to Lennon/McCartney, the song was composed by Paul about his sheepdog named Martha. In the spring of 1968, Paul had written two different titles in a notebook he had. These titles were “Martha My Dear” and “Silly Girl.” Unlike a majority of the songs from the album, n...

Have you tried installing an internal dampener on the snare? If you look at any pictures or footage of The Beatles from 1964, you can find it on Ringo’s snare. I’ve even seen Ably House’s isolated drum track videos and I clearly see a muffler on the snare.
@@ringofan101 I don’t have one. I’ve thought about buying one but haven’t gotten around to it. I’ve made DIY ones at home though by taping some felt underneath the head. It’s a good substitute
Ringo's drumming has a strong jazz influence, especially this song! The last 20-30 seconds are typically Buddy Rich's style! Once again you nailed it, dude.

One of my favorite Ringo moments is him wailing on the drums to Long Tall Sally at the Washington Coliseum.
@@-ASG- the Washington coliseum version of Long Tall Sally may be my favorite live rendition of the song. The way Ringo pounds the drums throughout the whole song is fantastic!
The NME Poll Winners concert is pretty nuts too, but the DC show - wow - they were all going for broke on that show.

Hey David, I have a question, why was this song released as a B-Side single with Hello, Goodbye on November 24, 1967?
Hey David, Awesome Video, speaking of which, can you do the Anthology version of this song please, because I’m the beginning, Ringo did a Buzz Roll, similar to Nowhere Man, Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Lite, and All You Need Is Love, but he also hits the Opened Hi-Hat.
Interesting fact: either due to me playing to fast or just me just not having enough stamina I could never get though this song and would have to end at roughly the 1 minute mark, but when I got the black friday 2024 re-release of the beatles first US single THAT DAY I got though the entire song. Now granted my arm was tired as all heck from it but I did get though it even if there was probably some pacing issues but overall I'm happy and it's a great start to my 2025. He had blisters from playing this? Looks easy
@@Huffcake keep in mind that when they recorded this take they had recorded 17 takes prior with the same intensity and style. Take 17 is released on the white album deluxe edition and if you listen to that you’ll hear some fierce drumming. So while it may look and sound easy, they had been playing the song for a while so it would make sense that Ringo would get blisters from playing this.
@ 17 takes is a lot yet the song itself seems basic. I’ve been listening to it recently in light of understanding that many view it as the first heavy metal song in musical history - Ringo’s drumming gives it those Beatles vibes which I like a lot along with John’s backing vocals / guitar riffs + Paul singing - without those things, it wouldn’t feel like the Beatles attempting to be heavy metal for a song. I think this about to turn into the 1 billionth debate over Ringo as a drummer 🥁 😆
