Sticks on Ride Cymbal - Maple vs. Hickory
มุมมอง 2182 ปีที่แล้ว
Ever wondered what sound difference the stick makes on a cymbal? In this video two different sticks are used to play the exact same cymbal: a quite light Vater Sugar Maple 7a stick and a Hickory 5a-Style stick (Millenium Signature Karin Anna Liedel V2). The video shows, what drastic sound difference these two sticks have on the Paiste Twenty Masters Deep Ride 24".

YES!! Excellent playing buddy 🔥🔥 ! Nice kit too!! Well Done!! You’ve earned a sub and a like from me! ! I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on my latest drum cover!! Cheers and Happy 2025!! 🔥🤘
👍😎🙃👌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I like both but that's a really nice pair of Paiste SE hats. I had a pair years ago (Black Label) and they were very bright and brittle sounding. These sound much warmer.
the K are much lower in pitch it seems.
Those Tom’s sound amazing
🔥Sounds excellent brother 🤝
Hi! What do you think about the low end? I know it's not the same, but I own an RME Fireface 800 and I think it lacks a good response in the low frequencies to get a good kick / toms sound. What about these preamps? Thanks a lot!
@@guillermomartin5167 As far as I know the mic pres in the RME interfaces are identical to the Octamic pres. I have not heard any lacks in the lows. They are just neutral and don‘t add anything to the signal.
Thanks for the answer! It was really helpful!
I put the texture coated Aquarians on my Tour Customs. I like them alright, I’ll keep them for a couple years and try something else
Sounds like the M88 and M201 can't cope with the gush of air in the port hole.
Just a difference in sustain really
The flanged sounded more like Bonhams snare if your trying for that sound. The old inside dampener was the best for custom sound.
Sounds the same
How do you feel they compare to the pricier ambassadors ?
I can‘t give a qualified answer to this because I had no direct comparison to regular Ambassador coated. I normally don‘t play single ply heads so this comparison will probably never take place.
Nice! What are the sizes?
At the time the video was taken it was 10x10, 12x10, 14x12, 16x16 and a 20x14 BD. The 10 and 12 toms are currently shortened by a drumbuilder to 10x8.3 and 12x8.3. For bigger gigs I use a 22x16 Bassdrum.
Good stuff. Was there any kind of imprint left behind from the old mach lugs? Also what are the dimensions of the shells?
No, no imprints from the metal holding of the lugs, but very minor imprint from the gaskets at some spots. No color difference. All in all not visible from more than an armlength away.
which kit do you like better??? MLX or this one??
I like both: the MLX projects very well on stage and the MMP records easier. I'm currently waiting for my 10 and 12 MLX racktoms to be returned from my drumbuilder - I had them cut down to standard sizes.
@@OSDrum Nice! I got a Pearl MLX too same color liquid amber. Thanks!

Wow that's a work of art
This ride has been with me for 15 years now. Mine is a rare prototype 22". Best ride ever made.
That’s my ride. I like the newer smaller logo
this must be the sound edge top cause i dont see the typical sound edge waves!
In the first half you can see the waves of the soundedge bottom glance through, in the second part of course the Top cymbal of the 2002 SE Hihat was on top over the bottom of the K Custom. This all was also written in the subtitles and one can clearly hear the SE Bottom in the first half.

@@OSDrum Oh, wow, thanks! Just watched it, and it sounds great!
I play so long with evans and remo , i try the response 2 from aquarians since 4 years and i must admit it's a very good compromise between evans and Remo, it's resonant and thin like Remo, but not too much and have the attack and feel of the evans, i need to try there coated skin, but for me Aquarian is a big yes.

Brother, how thick are these shells? I’m looking for thick heavy shells drums. Thnx❤
Toms 7.5 mm, Kicks somewhat thicker.
@@OSDrum so they are not that much thick.. I see.. snare drum too? sounds good though. Cheers
If you want really thick shells from Pearl CZX/SZX are the way to go. These are the thickest shells pearl has ever built. I think they are also available as the „Stadium Recipe“ in the Masterworks line.
@@OSDrum awesome. Thx. Rock on.
Die casts ring like a bell Pearl Super Hoops
Perfectly tuned
I think it depends on your style of playing. I tried die cast hoops and found them to be perfect for powerful rock style playing. However, I play lighter jazz in small venues and the flanged hoops give me the sound I want. I replaced my factory 1.6mm hoops with Gibraltar 2.3mm Power Hoops for better head control while still giving me the unstifled sound I want.
When I listened to that on my cheap studio headphones, I liked the BA19. Now, when I listen to this on my decent studio monitors, I'd say the TG-D71 wins, but they all sound good.
The BA19 for its money sounds very good for my ear. I often use it live as set and forget mic. For recording I often put it in front of the reso head.
The more comparison videos I watch, the less I want die-cast hoops 🤨
This makes me realize, Behringer aint cheap.. Other companies have just been ripping us off all these years...
Sounds like you’re gating the audio
As mentioned in the description: no FX, no EQ, no dynamics. Just the raw signal from the mics…
Paiste the best
That is a beautiful blue finish on those Pearls ! What are they ? Seems like the Beta52A always does the job. The Beyerdynamic TG D70 is completely different, but also good. It seems like the back-to-back tones changed dramatically from 2:09 to 2:22. Thanks for sharing.
The Drums are Pearl MMP Masters Maple Premium in Marine Blue Fade! I got them on a Deal too good to pass. Thx for your comment!
52 is much louder on this demo though.. comparison is a bit unfair. I do like 52s quite a lot, don't get me wrong.
Hi there, thank you for this video! You’ve done a great job. I’ve used an M88 (permanently mounted) in my kick drum for 20+ years so I’m intimately familiar with its sound. Your miking technique as well as your tuning of the kick drum are both excellent, evident because all the mics sounded great. Thanks again!

RE320 sounds great, was it in kickdrum mode?
Yes - it was in Kick-EQ position!
I use the Beyers as well. Wonder why the EQ is still bit boxy, but the whump and bite is pretty well on all of them. With huge price difference though... I use the Beyers because of price/performance ratio, but the Behringer is HUGE finding for me. Does anybody know the difference between Behringer BA19 and t.bone BD500?... same chassis, switch... same factory and components?
You know how to tune drums. Amazing.
I've just bought the Behringer BA19a which I'll be trying out at tonights gig..Was a bit unsure as it was so cheap but every review I've seen seems to make it comparable in quality with much more expensive Shure, AKG and Sennheisers etc. From your test it sounds great too!
I'm using it more and more as a "set and forget" mic in the kickdrum. The signal with the EQ set to mid scoop rarely needs any processing at all.
Sounds like the RE-320 is clipping a bit Pretty impressed with the TG D70 though, and the M201TG
Geeze dude never really laid into it. C'mon. What is the problem here?
Maybe you want to show us a video of your ride tests where you lay into the cymbals? :)
