Rumoured Alonso already had a pre-contract signed by then. People have to remember the Global Financial Crisis hit late 2008-early 2009 and Teams were forced to spend more responsibly and make big cutbacks to their budgets. Raikkonen was earning $51M in his contract and after 2009 noone was earning more than 20M. Thats why it made sense for Kimi to take a break -I'm sure his management/Kimi when teams were offering less than half his Ferrari contract. So he just took the diff (30M) and did wtf he wanted to do. I would have done the same.
