    Can you suggest a way for my 91 year old blind father with dementia? He needs something completely hands free to make phone calls and he's beginning to have great difficulty with his remote for the tv. Is there some device that can make calls without him having to turn it on? He uses his google home mini for news, weather, time and date and he's comortable with that. Any new learning will not happen due to his dementia. Thanks

    Is there any software that can easily read Stem documents . I want a software that can read out mathematical equations of physics - for example equations of quantum mechanics. I am thankful to anyone even if he/she tried to search it. ❤

      Unfortunately, no screen reader is good at reading mathematical notation because of the visual nature. Our team does not have experience with this, but based on information from others, JAWS is the most equiped to do so. It might be worth posting in the National Association of Blind Students Facebook group to ask if anyone has more extensive experience.

      I have found that Google apps work best on iOS. They are getting better on Mac but not completely usable. I am not up to date with how they run on Windows, but I’ve heard they can work with NVDA.

    Hi Caitlyn, I am a vision teacher who has been out of the loop for more than 30 years. Your videos are astounding and I am working with a very intelligent 8th grade student who we are transitioning from a Braille Note Touch to a Windows Laptop with JAWS and a Focus 40 Blue. If you have any starting places for her let me know. Most of the reference manuals contain information that is way beyond what we need at this time. We just want to know how to allow her to access Google Classroom, Google Docs and the Desmos online calculator. I have learned tons in the past several months, but feel I am failing her as she moves into high school. HELP?

    Thanks for creating such a video full of practical knowledge. I really appreciate it. Please tell me that how to use Google Docs on Mac with Voice Over with no issues. I am a freelance writer and I use Jaws and NVDA, when I used my friend's M1 Macbook Air, and tried to write on Google Docs the Voice of the Voice OVer was very weird and was not speaking the words or characters correctly. Can you please guide on this because of your vast experience using these screen readers. Thanks

      @challengesolutions5236 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Unfortunately, Google Docs is not very accessible on MacOS. As far as I know, there is no way to make it fully usable with Voiceover on a Mac. The best way our team has found to use Google Docs is on an iPad with a keyboard.

      Each screen reader has various voices you can choose from, so you can taylor it to your own preferences. NVDA probably has the most voices available, but there are many voices that sound quite natural.

    Oh my gosh this is an awesome tutorial. Everything from the information the delivery and all points in between. Although I was born visually impaired I have not learned braille until maybe four years ago. I will be turning 60 next month. I'm very excited and I study or read braille every day. Now I have a simple E reader I obtained from the library via my real instructor from the Oregon Commission for the Blind. I have had my instructor Bluetooth the my E reader to my iPhone 13 Pro Max. We had similar issues of connectivity for whatever reason. We did try shutting things down and restarting. I cannot recall what the world fix was. We called or she called they talking books out here in the northwest region. Long story short my typing contractions using my braille reader appears in my iPhone as if I typed it myself! Magic I tell you. I like this because I am typing learning how to type in braille grade 2. My voiceover will read my words. And that I can hear my progress. Thank you for this tutorial

    I would like a guide for using the Mac if you haven't done one. Also, how do you competently insert images. I know sighted people have a thing for pretty pictures :). How do you make sure they are aesthetically pleasing? How do you know when to insert them? Can you copy images from websites such as Google Images and paste them in? How do you know they're not crooked or backwards or something?

    • @challengesolutions5236
      @challengesolutions5236 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’ll definitely add a Keynote for Mac video to our to-do list. Unfortunately, we have not found a reliable solution for independently finding and inserting images. You can use images from websites, and some Google Images have alt-text, but we have not found a reliable way to verify that they are inserted in a visually pleasing place. We always use AIRA or have a sightling check our images.

    Nice break down of all of these. I also prefer NVDA over JAWS. Heck I haven't used JAWS in years since I switched to NVDA. Like you, I started using JAWS at a very young age. I always just assumed NVDA would be lacking and not that great since it was free. Boy was I wrong.

  • @ferares89
    @ferares89 ปีที่แล้ว

    Loved the video, very insightful. I'm a web developer and I'm starting to work more a more with web accessibility, from what I could test so far I've noticed that different screen readers can present very different results when interacting with a website which makes testing a bit harder. I've only tried 2 screen readers so far, Orca for Linux and ChromeVox for Google Chrome, do you plan on making videos about any of those 2? They're not as popular as JAWS, NVDA or Voiceover but Orca is, as far as I know, the only screen reader option for Linux users. I'll be adding the Windows and Mac readers to my tests to make sure my products are compatible with those. Thanks for the great video

    • @challengesolutions5236
      @challengesolutions5236 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for including accessibility testing in your web development! Yes, every screen reader interacts with content a little bit differently. We will not be providing a video on ChromeVox because none of our team members have much experience with it, and we do not recommend it for totally blind users. I can absolutely make a video on Orca, though.

  • @muttbg5

    I'm wondering as a sighted person I'd love to know how a person who is blind or visually impaired learns the hotkeys if you've never used a screen reader before? Do you have a print out of the hotkeys in braille first?

    • @Matt92Machine
      @Matt92Machine ปีที่แล้ว

      On NVDA there is a help menu, and an option to look at the commands. You can find something similar on JAWS, and Voiceover. The simple ones are pretty straight forward.

    • @challengesolutions5236
      @challengesolutions5236 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people do use braille hotkey lists. Others use audio tutorials. Lots of blind people also work with teachers of the visually impaired or take assistive technology classes so that a proficient screen reader user can explain the hotkeys to them and troubleshoot problems as they learn.

    • @challengesolutions5236
      @challengesolutions5236 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since you already have a Windows computer and don’t like JAWS, NVDA is probably your best bet. It is similar to JAWS in some ways, but most people find it much easier to learn and use. Windows Narrator is also an option. It will not work as a long-term, all purpose solution because it is still lacking in a lot of areas, but it will allow you to navigate the computer, compose documents, and use very basic websites.

    Thank you for your help full clip. I have a macbook m1 and I have some difficulty in using that, hope your comment help me. When I want to read a long text for example in word and have lots of paragraphs between headers, how I can go down for a few Page? I tried page down key, voice over announce the next page numbers but voice over keep reading text from the last cursor place in text.

    • @challengesolutions5236
      @challengesolutions5236 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you move through the Word window with ctrl-option-right arrow, Voiceover should announce text fields for each page. You can interact with them and move through the text normally. The Word app for Mac is a bit tricky to use, though, and it seems to change with every update, so this might not work in your version of the app. We recommend using Pages for word processing whenever possible.

    • @challengesolutions5236
      @challengesolutions5236 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, none of our team members have enough personal experience with Dolphin Supernova to speak on it at length. As far as I know based on the experiences of others, it is not robust enough to work as a long-term screen reading solution for most people. It works well in very basic contexts like word processing and very simple web navigation, but it cannot handle complex formatting or convoluted websites like Blackboard.

      I have used it very briefly with an Android tablet running Talkback and Brailleback. It was extremely difficult to connect, very laggy, and kept disconnecting, but technically it did work. I think that is more of a Brailleback issue than a Focus 40 issue though.
