Hello, I wanted to introduce myself and post a few relevant links. I'm Jack Mord, the owner and admin of The Thanatos Archive.
I have been collecting post mortem, mourning and other types of antique photography for 20+ years. Ungerecht, wenn ein Mensch früh sterben muss. Lange habe ich mich mit diesem Thema beschäftigt. Ein kleiner Trost: Unsere Körper sind Kostüme für eine Show. In der Show lernen wir. Die Kostüme ziehen wir dann wieder aus.

My great aunt jayne passed away aged 17yrs she worked in the cotton Mills, there is only one photo of her, she died of TB same as her mother. My grandma always talked about her.

My auntie’s trunk we inherited had several postcards of a child relative in her casket. My granny said they do this because it very well could be the only picture they get because it was expensive.

How do I put this...when you pass, your eyes kind of glaze over. Pretty sure that's what the picture was showing, as the pic was also probably not taken immediately after death. Aka the eyes would look cloudy or light colored with this type of film they used for photography back then.

@@aribelle9137 to proste. mam jasną skórę i ciemne oczy, gdybym zmarła z otwartymi oczyma, to też po chwili zaszłyby mgłą. To daje wrażenie, mętnego niebieskiego oka. Takie własnie oczy ma kobieta na fotografii.

people need to remeber, everybody in these pics, the living and parents were 100% certian their kids had gone to heaven.
The first time I heard of this was in the movie "The Others" with Nicole Kidman. Gruesome, but still fascinating. Thank you for the video.

@@vickisawyer7405 Z Polski. Mój tata zmarł w 2012r. (to straszne ale dla mnie to wciąż jakby było wczoraj) Mam zdjęcie w kaplicy, Tata leży w trumnie a mama, siostra i ja stoimy obok. Nigdy nie oglądam tego zdjęcia. Tata zmarł nagle, wracał z wakacji, ( męska wyprawa na ryby na Morzu Północnym), zasnął na promie z Ystad do Gdańska i się nie obudził...
@@Florka100 I'm very sorry. I don't have any pics of my loved ones, except when they were alive. I know others who have done the coffin pictures. I guess it depends on what comforts you most. My brother died in 1991 and I still miss him all of the time.

Yes, they are. Post=After, Mortem=Life. They are exactly that. You're confusing the words with autopsy.

Właśnie wczoraj zapaliłam znicz dla mojego psiaka. To już 7 lat. Mam ten komfort, że mogłam pochować go w swoim ogrodzie.
La muerte no se conoce al morir. "Conocer la muerte" es cuando muere alguien que amamos, un hijo, esposo, madre ,padre etc....y cuando regresamos a casa esa persona ya no vuelve más.

Жалко детей, по-видимому, братьев и сестёр, которые фотографируются с умершими 😢😢😢. Жестоко испытывать таким образом психику детей 😢😢😢.
Раньше была очень высокая детская смертность, и смерть воспринималась совсем по другому, горе конечно, но это была неотъемлемая часть жизни. Детей рожали много, и лишь малая часть доживала до взрослого возраста. В семье моей бабушки 1909 года рождения было 12 детей и лишь 4 выросли.

Grim that photos were taken after death since photos were considered a luxury. At least they got to keep a memory of their loved one. Beautifully haunting.

May have been a sore or wound of some kind. That's what I thought. Not sure why they didn't try to conceal it though. Maybe just too heartbroken.

Social history is fascinating .
I do find It strange that with most of the infants/children that are a multiple births, that they seem to pass soon after the other or same time looking at pics.

Cuanta tristeza la de esas madres y padres que perdieron a sus pequeños, supongo que el consuelo era al menos tener una foto de ellos, aun cuando fuese fallecidos, y uns manera de decirles , que nunca los olvidarian. A diderencia de nuetra epoca que retratamos cada instante de la vida.
