Exploring a NEW CREEK and Catching BIG WILD BROWN TROUT (Winter Fly Fishing in Pennsylvania)
Today I fished a local stream, one that I’ve always written off as fish-less, completely overlooking it. When I finally decided to try it out, I was shocked to discover the quality of the trout swimming in this unlikely place

I Hooked The BIGGEST BROWN TROUT of My Life! (Streamer Fishing)

It’s a well known fact that big streamers are the most effective way to target the biggest brown trout in a given body of water. Today I experienced that firsthand as I fished with big streamers for the first time and had some incredible results

What did you get him on?
Pheasant tail nymph
@@mpfishing5530must have had to be pretty small for this time of year
Pretty wild watching you a) call out wild vs. stocked before ever getting the fish out of the water and, more so, b) NOT use your gear. You chase the fish rather than controlling it and then when your buddy finally schools you to stop running after the fish, you sit there and wear out the fish unnecessarily. I've caught fish twice that size in a quarter of the time. If for no other reason than the health of the fish, please learn how to fight them.
@@JohnJohn-to2qb can’t control a fish on 6X tippet when there’s a log in the water just downstream, at that point I literally had to chase it and try to direct it around it because I don’t think I could have stopped it without breaking off. Fish was back in the water in literally less than 30 seconds so idk what your point is
@@mpfishing5530 Your buddy saw the issue. Anybody who has spent a lifetime fishing sees the issue. If you choose to turn a blind eye to criticism that's in the best interest of the fish, that's on you. Do you.
@ if I had to choose between a 50/50 shot that the tippet breaks before I can get the fishes head turned away from the fallen log and prolonging the fight, I’d choose to prolong the fight. As soon as I got the fish downstream of any dangerous snags I immediately stopped chasing it and tried to hold the fish where it was. I’m not turning a blind eye to anything, I’m well aware it’s not good to play fish as long as I played this one, but that’s something you consider when choosing the gear you use for the day and not something that happens on the stream during the fight. If I had known fish of that size were in there I would have went with heavier tippet and had the fish in half the time, but as I said in the video all we expected were a few small ones and it was just way easier for them with the lighter tippet. I’m not trying to sound disrespectful or anything, you clearly have been fishing longer than I have and know more than me, but what would you have done in this situation to get the fish in quicker? Because I can tell you, that tippet was straining a lot and was on the edge of breaking every time I put heavy pressure on him. I’d rather get the fish in and release it quickly than leave it swimming around with line and flies trailing from its mouth
@@mpfishing5530 I wouldn't have been using 6x on a stream I was unsure about. Many marginal, low-confidence streams can have absolute tanks. It's the higher-density streams, in general, that tend to yield smaller fish. Not always, but usually. I'm prepared for a tank if I'm hunting on marginal waters. In most cases, I explore these types of waters first with streamers as that will typically uncover what's in there most efficiently. Go back with nymphs later if you'd like. But if I was dead set on using nymphs, for whatever reason, I would've been using 5x fluoro. Even with 6x fluoro more experienced anglers would've had that fish a lot quicker. How? Well... you chased that fish before you even gave your gear the chance to do its job. Side pressure and see if you can turn him. I understand you were fearful of the log, but it's evident that you were hellbent on running after that fish irrespective of hazards. Then when you clear the log, you let the fish remain below you. Instead, THAT'S when you drop below the fish to gain control. Also, I personally woudl've put that fish on the reel and let my drag do what it was intended for. Being below the fish so you could sweep him toward you while relying on your gear more would've helped this NOT be a 5 and a half minute fight for, while nice, not a massive brown. I know you don't know me and I maintain anonymity on here, but I've been fishing 24" class and larger wild browns in PA for decades. I don't claim to know it all, but I certainly woudln't let a fish like that fight for as long as you did.
@ I’m aware I made mistakes, but just let it be known that the fishes health is always a top concern for me. I just panic when I get in these situations, all of those errors are just due to a lack of experience. Tbh I don’t even know the true capabilities of my gear because I’ve rarely had to put it to the test. I’ve only had fish this big on a handful of times, the first time was a brown that I’d estimate at 17-19 inches which broke my 5x clean off after it ran downstream from the small pocket I hooked it in. The second time I had a 21-22 inch brown foul hooked while streamer fishing, which made it fight a whole lot harder than it should have and probably made me think these fish are capable of more than they actually are, and because of that I always fight them way too passively since I’m afraid of them making a strong run at the wrong moment and I just simply don’t know how much pressure my tippet can really take before it’s too much
Where at in PA? just went out for wilds yesterday 15 degrees real feel 0 could barely fish my eyelets kept freezing forgot chapstick
Southern PA
@ northern here, Cambria county
@ it’s been cold where I’m at too, but nothing that cold, still somewhat bearable. Can’t wait for spring
Dude had the spots to em
My go to bait is 100% corn
Bro! i waited a whole week for this! When i get home, it's on dude!
That’s a good brown, definitely a stunning fish.
Really pretty one. Saw you edited the comment to avoid name dropping the spot, but it actually wasn’t from the one you were thinking of. This stream isn’t even listed as having natural reproduction and even has smallmouth/rock bass, that’s why it was so crazy to find a small isolated population of browns in it
If you need any good wild brown and RAINBOW spots on the breeches that are public message me on the pa fly fishing forum.
will do, thx man
If you can afford to, I'd definitely get a GoPro or other action camera and a head mount. Super worth it. Awesome fish brother! Tight lines!
Definitely will be getting one at some point. Thx for watching
Very nice!
PA?
Yep
If you plan on catching big wild browns I would suggest you get yourself a much bigger net my man.
I have one that’s been sitting in the garage, just have to figure out a way to attach it to me conveniently. Definitely will be easier with the big net
@@mpfishing5530 it’s the best time of year to be on the water! You are on your way to some great wild brown experiences! Awesome footage!
@ for sure. There’s almost no other fisherman out and the fish are biting great
this stream on the south mountain?
In that area. I’m not exactly sure what counts as south mountain, this was the stream that flows through the old lake that got drained
Let it be known, i love how you're real on here and dont censor yourself or act for youtube. I love watching this.
I remember when I first started fly fishing. Lol. You should come to N.Y in the fall and fish some lake ontario tribs. Browns to 15 pounds
TH-cams next million subscribers channel.
@@TheBaldingPlebs doubt it, would be nice tho
Holy Jesus blessed 🙂🏆🎣
Eat it or wear it they say. Snagged fish don’t count.
If he was hooked in the mouth and I lost him, you have no idea how mad I would have been 😂
My buddy and i started a channel this year and did one our first videos here. He hooked a FREAKIN monster brown. Prolly mid 20s. Swam into the vegetation and popped off. He caught a 23 inch pellet pig rainbow later on. One of the highest densities of big browns I've ever seen. Tight lines brother!
@@daveofthewoods3133 it really is a great stream. Smart fish, though
Awesome vid man!! Also been hooked on streamers for a while. Caught my biggest brown on them! Super addicting! One thing that really helped me is having more than one retrieve, and varying those retrieve speeds! Kelly Galloup has a ton of vids out now and even started his own podcast, and he’s just an immense wealth of knowledge. Learned a lot from him. Good luck!
Fish don't miss a meal - unless they want to :)! Think of it like this: If a BigMac hit you the face would you miss it? Big predators don't miss a meal unless they see something or they don't like something at the last mila-second. They just don't miss ... Great vid... Awesome footage!
Trust me… they do miss
Did you hear that from Kelly Galloup 😂
Just fished there last week. Great stretch of creek caught me a 19inch brown on a big on an articulated streamer
Depends on what flys are on the water
sucks you didn't land it but i was a good fight
So speaking of indicators. I was fishing a wisconsin river and was standing on the bank looking over still water. I threw an indicator with a bead nymph up river and had a 20 inch brown nose my nymph and inhale my indicator...lol.
@@TheBaldingPlebs never had one that big take an indicator lol
Awesome video man! What are you filming with?
Just my iPhone 11. Quality is kinda bad obviously, but it’s what I got right now so I make it work
Great day for December! I've been sneaking around the mountains of central Pa for a couple decades.
Great video and fishing
Hi there, a similar thing happened to me last summer on my local river in the uk, a large tree had fallen in and where the edge is there is now a flow round and trout were rising and I hooked a monster, my rod was bent like a horseshoe and I was trying to keep it out of the branches but to no avail when tippet snapped but I did get to see it clearly for a moment and it would easily go 7 or 8 lbs, great misery followed lol.
It’s crazy stocked 16-20 inch browns when that water is rising or higher they get soooo aggressive!! Nice stuff tho
@@fishingtv365 was fishing a non-stocked, class a wild trout stream 👍
Will stocked brown trout eat them ?
Definitely, I don’t fly fish for stocked trout that much but I’d assume so. But if the fish are freshly stocked and still accustomed to eating pellets I don’t think they would chase as much. Whereas wild fish that have been eating baitfish their whole lives would probably react better to big streamers.
Yeah after watching this video it makes me want to go out and catch a few fish thanks for sharing great video and happy new year to you 👍🇮🇪🤝
Happy new year!
Unless something changed from last year, you’re posting yourself trespassing so I’d be careful about that
Wasn’t aware it was private. From what I’d heard from other fisherman I saw there and the fact that the landowners I did see didn’t say anything I thought it was fine, but thanks for letting me know
@@timothyweaver3174 what did it look like in terms of signage the last time you were there and found out it was private. Because from what I saw, there were signs posting the falls and then none upstream from the bridge where I got in. I very well could be in the wrong here though
@@mpfishing5530 the signs are along the small side road paralleling the stream. Accessing from where you did you wouldn’t see them. Owner owns both sides I believe
@ ahh then that’s why. The road is closed for construction so I’ve never driven or walked along it
@ I used to fish that stretch frequently beforehand. Definitely enjoyable water
My exsperience is Colorado related but I'm sure it applies to your area .many times on small streams and rivers the last half hour before dark is when the big browns show up and in the same areas we only caught and saw small fish in the day !
@@danielcline7413 in the wintertime it gets a little cold for that. I’m sure that some of the bigger ones are active then this time of year, but I’d rather wait until midday when the air and water temp warms up, and I’ll also not end up freezing my butt off in the process
@mpfishing5530 I dont blame you I remember fishing the river here in feb.out of boredom we were on the sunny side and I walked down to cast and spooked a big brown in inches of water soaking up the sun right next to the bank I had been fishing just a short distance away but that fish was so busy sunbathing I had to almost step on him to spook him .the river we fish has two kinds of browns up until about 18 inches the have a pretty green back but the larger fish have a really chocolate color from staying out of the sun undercuts and low light feeding .I actually realized that your video was current and that my advice wasnt meant for winter but on the other hand the winter brown I spooked might mean look in unexpected sunny spots where they normally aren't I spotted that brown by its shadow just as I spooked it so keep your eyes open and good luck .
What part of Pa you in ?
Southern
Looks like maybe a section of the Yellow Breeches, been there alot. If so, it's stocked year long by their club. Also, a very nice c&r section
@ not the breeches. I’ve been meaning to check out that stream soon however, seems to have a decent population of wild browns on top of the stocked fish
A 13-14" trout, is not a small fish.
No not at all. I’d normally be freaking out over catching a fish that size. But when you are using a fly that is 5 inches long, fish of that size are definitely on the smaller side
30 year streamer fisherman here. Word of advice dont chase them up and down the stream. Be better equipped for the big browns. The biggest brown ive hooked was 13lb 14oz and i chased him up and down the stream and he got off. It spooks the hell out of them and they run like crazy. I caught him 1 month later and stayed put and had no problems with him.
I’d only do that with salmon
@@jeremiahurban2457 yeah watching the video back Its easy to see I made a bunch of mistakes. As soon as I saw how big the fish was I just started panicking
it looks a little like your not sure if you fish right handed or left. im presuming your either left handed or learned how to fish from a lefty because you keep swithcing the pole from your left hand to the right. im not sure but ill bet if you figure that out you will hook more fish.
@@ejkelley2364 yeah that’s exactly how I am. I taught myself how to fly fish and that caused a bunch of bad habits
'Sacred Doo Doo'. . We learn something everyday. Fishing big streamers with too thin of a tipped isnt too smart either. Better luck next time. Great video..i was totally zoned in.. over the falls ..still on.. great video
