How to Palm Mute your Guitar or Dulcimer | Inglewood Instruments
It's time for another technique tips sort of video. Palm muting is a fun and sound-enhancing right hand every player should have available. It'll add a new layer of dynamics and tonal color to your playing, and once you hear how it works you'll probably start noticing it all over your favorite recordings!
I leaned on Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" and Dolly's iconic "Jolene" as helpful (I hope!) examples.
As with all the videos on this channel, I welcome your feedback in the comments, ESPECIALLY since these technique videos are even more tricky to communicate when I can't see if they're connecting. So please comment whether I left holes that merit another video, or if it was helpful, etc. It's really encouraging to hear from you fine folks. ;-)

    Great video. Any specific advice on palm muting the alternating base (in drop d) between low e and d strings while avoiding muting bottom 3 strings to make room for clear melody attack?

    • @HeyInglewood
      @HeyInglewood 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      hmmm.... this is a tricky physics / physiology matter. not being able to see you (or you me), I'm just going to assume you're trying to manage all of this with a pic and jump between the low and the high strings? If that's the case I don't see how it could work (at least not without serious gymnastics), because I think you (I do!) would shift the right hand to hit the high strings and nudge them muted. I think this is the exact sort of reason that probably lead Chet Atkins to chicken pickin' sorta style. Uses the non-thumb fingers to grab melody while letting the thumb jump back and forth, and he had a thumb pick to bring out the attack on the low side. Not remotely easy.

  • @harrikeinonen7576
    @harrikeinonen7576 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Thanks Ryan. I like that palm mute technique. Sometimes I do find the D- tuned Merlin a bit too jangly. A technique that I came up with that I use in some of my own songs is to strum with the fingers and the heel of my palm. It has a similar effect but works better if you’re not using a pick. It is a bit reminiscent of a snare drum but with chords. Hope that makes sense.

    • @HeyInglewood
      @HeyInglewood 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Interesting… are you saying you strum with your whole hand in a way that your palm is moving, not planted, but still in a muted way? That sounds tricky!!

    • @harrikeinonen7576
      @harrikeinonen7576 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ yes I move the whole hand. I tuck my three outside fingers against the heel of my palm, leaving my index finger and thumb open. Then I strum whilst semi muting the strings with the heel of my palm. I’ll post a short video soon.

    • @HeyInglewood
      @HeyInglewood 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I recall replying to this, but alas do not see it now... I'll try again, and thank you for the question. I discovered the dulcimer style instruments years ago (without realizing they were even part of a family of instruments), and fell in love with the ease of playing, and the ability to access creativity and exploration easier. But over the years I found the available instruments to be fine but lacking. Mostly I wanted something that was of higher precision and played in tune 100%, so that lead me down the path I find myself on now. And along the way it made sense to outfit some of them with a guitar-style setup (and one in chromatic dulcimer), just to see what happens. And because for a good bit of my guitar work I end up playing the upper 3 strings only to stay out of the way of a keys player, so this seemed like a lot of good overlaps. Hopefully that answered the question ;-). Lemme know if it opened a bunch more!

    Will be awesome if you figure out how to get the price down a bit, maybe do a “handcrafted line” at this current price and another line thats assembly built by a guitar manufacturer with a better price point, $299 max. Hard to think of these small specialty guitars catching on if they are over $1k.

      I’d like them to be for everyone, but manufacturing in the US is just really expensive. $300 for a 100% US made instrument just isn’t realistic even with a manufacturing company. At least not with these instrument specs. There are too many parts and too many intricacies to pull it off (trust me, I’m trying to figure out the options!!). Maybe there’ll be solutions in a year or two 🤷🏽‍♂️

  • @BobStrawn
    @BobStrawn หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nice sound on that, and no I don't think it is a ukulele. Since your instrument is fretted like a dulcimer and has that wonderful dulcimer sound, I would agree that it is a dulcimer. I think the sound matters and if I were blindfolded I would not guess ukulele from the sound. Not that all ukuleles have the classic ukulele sound. My ukulele is quite thin and it sounds more like a harp than a typical ukulele. That may be because I use D'Addario EJ99TLG Pro-Arté Carbon Ukulele Strings, for a Tenor Low G on a concert sized ukulele. (I have no affiliation with D'Addario, but I love this set of strings.) In any case, ukuleles can be thinner and they can sound different. Ukulele's can be tuned several ways so again that is not a strong distinction. There are some three stringed ukulele's but most of them have four strings. In summation, I think you are doing great work and no it isn't a ukulele.

    Thank you Ryan. I can’t wait for my Cumberland guitar. I play the Seagull Merlin (both the G-tuned and the D-tuned versions). I am anticipating many, many questions from my musician friends when they see the amazing looking Cumberland. I already field many about the Merlins. My congratulations on bringing your amazing project to fruition and my gratitude for your video tutorials that have helped so much in transforming my life for the better. Music is the ultimate therapy for what ails the soul. Again, my heartfelt gratitude from a 36 year (Australian) army veteran.

    Hello I am interested in one myself, but I noticed it only had seven frets. what frets did you leave off the scale at that length?

    • @HeyInglewood
      @HeyInglewood 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Merlin’s have 7 frets so they can cover all the notes in an octave. The Cumberlands have 12 frets, with a “6.5” fret (flat 7th on the scale), and then the 4 notes above the octave mark (repeating the notes of the previous octave) Does that help?

      @LouisianaBlackwaterFlyFishing หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HeyInglewood I never took music theory lol. Are those frets in the same order as one using a dulcimer fret calculation 20.75 x seven frets? That I understand if so? or are they in some special unique distance?

    • @HeyInglewood
      @HeyInglewood หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not a unique setup, same as a modern mountain dulcimer. They have an extra fret that the Merlin’s leave off. Scale length is 21”.

      @@HeyInglewood Oh I see, its just like a mtn dulcimer just seven frets calculated to the 21 vibration length.

    Mass produced CNC machine instruments of basic quality. Not enough frets, cant even play ole songs like ole joe clark, or cluck ole hen.

      Well, it is what it is, I suppose, and why it’s a pretty inexpensive instrument. Have you seen the Cumberland model I released this week? This is a good addendum to what you’re saying: th-cam.com/video/p6QgzZAlr0U/w-d-xo.html
