Tilta Lightweight Shoulder Rig | Unbox and Honest Review
Welcome back to another Tilta Product review and unboxing video. This time we have a great little compact shoulder rig kit with with everything you need to start adding a unique perspective to your filming.
The Tilta Lightweight Shoulder Rig! This is a complete kit, ready to go right out of the box.
Introduction 00:00
The Case 1:14
Base and Shoulder Pad 2:12
Handles & Arms 4:10
Rear Support 5:43
Dual Baseplate 7:14
Tools & Hardware 8:55
Assembly & Test Fit 10:35
Final Thoughts 12:02
Overall I am very impressed. Its very light weight as they say, fully assembled without a camera it is only 1.7kg.
Everything feels like very good quality, which makes sense as it's made from aviation grade aluminium alloy. All the parts fit nicely, nothing is hard to fit or slide. I love all the 1/4 20s all over the place, so I can attach whatever I want to it.
You can purchase a wide range of additional accessories, there is a whole section of them on the Tilta site, some specifically designed for this kit. I have already ordered a few myself including two 15mm rods, the Tilta Mini Articulating Arm, so I can mount my monitor, and a V- Mount battery attachment to keep everything powered up.
This product was sent to me for free, but I did not get paid anything from Tilta, this is all my opinion and thoughts. The links below are my affiliate links, and I get a small percentage if you use them. So if you are thinking of ordering this product, please click through and use my links, I would greatly appreciate it.

      Hi! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. That battery was just on there for testing. Doesn’t last that long. Now I use a much bigger one, or more often I plug into my V-Mount I put on the back. That’s a new update. I run longer shoot days now, so using v mounts for most things is the way to go. I have it set up on my camera now from a shoot yesterday, if you hit me up on Instagram I can send you a short clip or some photos. @volare.media

    • @VolareMedia
      @VolareMedia 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much! Glad this video helped you. For counter weights, I just put weights on until it feels like it’s sitting about half way with the arm. Not at the top, and now all the way to the bottom. Like centred on the arm, if that makes same. This way it can move up or down with bumps. You can adjust the spring and shock rate to help with this as well.

    Maybe I'm wrong here, but why did Tilta decide to change standards? Did they finally just decide to abandon the Tilta standard in favor of manfrotto and... that other one? Great, doesn't fit my Tilta baseplate. I had to bolt on the included plate onto the bottom of the plate I'm already using. I don't love having a stack of plates, but I guess that works... ugh. Now I need to find an elegant way to mount a monitor where I want it... preferably not an expensive arm that shifts at the joint when bumped at all... but that's probably what I'm stuck with... should've built a custom rig...

    • @VolareMedia

      I always prefer having some sort of bottom plate now. With my rods and V-mount on the back. I build it all out depending on my shot list. Takes time, but if it’s the right shot, it’s always worth it.

      Hey! Thanks for watching. And for all the great info. I sure don’t get on here enough to check these anymore. Starting the TH-cam back up soon. Have a few filmed. For this set up, I’m usually hustling between my sticks and shoulder rig. So I have a baseplate that is manfrotto and I just swap between the two, or handheld with the easy rig. Never have to change plates, I can quickly swap between the three types of shooting. Then I just have another camera on my gimbal for the 4th style. This way I’m not changing plates ever really on a bigger shoot with all different shot styles.

Still very happy with it. Sets up so fast! Instantly ready to rock. The perfect combo has been A Cam on sticks with manfortto plate, then switch to this when needed. Then we have B Cam that lives on the Ring Grip with gimbal etc. Great set up and saves so much time during filming days.

After using lots of different v mounts on film set etc. I recommend considering one with a USB + USB-C on it. This way it has other uses aside from this. I bought this shoulder rig and it's great. I have only one problem. I want to mount the entire shoulder rig on the tripod. The long plate of the shoulder rig (the one with rosette mounts) should be a manfrotto plate. I have a manfrotto fluid head but the plate is not compatible. The plate is too short and the top part of the should rig touches the tripod head and the plate can't be screwed in place. In the tilta adv of the sounder rig they show this feature but they cut the video at the exact moment they are trying to mound the shoulder rig on the tripod. So I think tilta know that the plate is not designed correctly but the don't give a f.....😢😂

      Thanks for this info. I do love this shoulder rig, and I find it very useful and so easy to set up. But I feel the same. It’s too bad that one plate is not compatible with manfroto. No one is commenting on how Tilta just had one rod mount in the front (for the follow focus), but without two rods you will not be able to use this rig for heavier lens that need support or a traditional matte box! They clearly had the space to do it. I know this is meant to be a rig for light cameras, but you can't grow with it! Why, Tilta, WHY?

    • @VolareMedia
      @VolareMedia ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. There is easily a way to mount dual rods. I am doing an episode on it soon. I actually use this base of this shoulder rig now for my handheld. Bigger lenses or anything. My next lens will be the DZO 20-70 and I guarantee I can make it work. You might just need to use a different base. Just about any base can mount to this, super easy. Might even work with this base, just a longer 12” rod instead. Should be able to mount a focus, zoom and matte box to the rod. If not I’ll use a dual rod base and mount to this. Give me a bit, I’ll make an episode about it. Thanks again.

    A bit of a random question here, I am currently trying to get this rig up and running with the rs3 pro, How are you setting the arm? mine feels pretty stiff... like I set it so that it falls from the top like the instructions but if you push it down past horizontal it doesn't come back up. And if I set it so it bounces back up, there is about 10-15 cm play from horizontal that it doesnt return to horizontal at all.. I hope that makes sense! haha appreciate your time :) love your shots!

    • @VolareMedia
      @VolareMedia ปีที่แล้ว

      You are talking about the hydra arm correct, not the gimbal? I really had to play with the spring and dampening stiffness a bit. And the weights. Tried a few different things until I found the right combo. For this stuff we use the a7iii with one v mount battery, three weights and then I adjusted the shock just a bit back from full negative. The spring tension I barely touched.

    How I can found those custom mounts that you drilled into the car? 😫

    • @VolareMedia
      @VolareMedia ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Thanks for watching. Good news! The mounts are not custom, they are Tilta mounts. You just remove the suction part. Four screws. Just order two extras from Tilta, either size, they are the same price. If you do, please use my affiliate link below. If you can’t click on it, just copy and paste all of it 🙏 Click> tilta.com/shop/hydra-alien-small-suction-cup/?aff=chris.chisholm

    I ran into an issue with the HDMI cable poking me in the face, so what I did is I switched to the Arca Swiss side of the plate so then I could run it left to right and that allowed me to off center my camera to the right so that the shoulder pad fit more comfortably, idk if it's because of how my shoulders are, but it was uncomfortable having to the rig farther out on my shoulder.

      Hello, Thanks for the tip. That’s some great info. I ran into this as well. I ended up trying my 90 degree hdmi cable. That works too! I’ll be using it this week for the first time on an actual project. So we will see how it goes. Thanks again for all the great info, and thanks for watching.

    Great video, very detailed. If I were to want to mount the whole rig with the camera attached to a tripod, would I be able to attach a tripod plate to the bottom and in front of the shoulder pad and pop it on my tripod?

      Hey. Glad you enjoyed the video. To answer you question. Sort of. Under the main large pad there is nothing. But if you really wanted to you could remove the rear small pad bracket and attach the included dual plate. Right on the back. But it would be very front heavy and awkward in my opinion. The other option would be if you slide off the lower plate with the two pads. You could mount any plate to the bottom of the part that slides out. It would still have the handles on it. If that’s what your wanting. If you follow my Instagram I could always send you a video or photo of what I mean. @volaremedianet I hope that helps. Thanks again.
